i got these brake calipers, lever and cable, but it’s not right is it? like the way it’s moving means the brake won’t work, i know it’s not fitted properly so it obviously isn’t working or am i being totally stupid?
Looks like that needs a piece of cable housing between the brake connection and the brake lever.

You also need an outer cable

You need the cable housing. The cable runs through a stiff outer tube called housing, that will be held at each end in those cable stops. That way when you squeeze the brake, the cable has something to push against, to pull the cable through.
Hard to explain but just go ask your local bike shop for 2ft of brake housing. Shouldn’t cost more than $10.

not to be rude but yes. pushing housing and pulling cable is the same thing. you just need something to hold the cable tight on the opposite side of the bead

You’re in the UK, or Italy maybe? Asking because you have the right hand lever going to the front brake. In the US and most of the rest of the world, the right lever goes to the rear brake.

I feel like maaaaybe this is a case where the best course of action is to go to a shop or one of those coop diy bike shops and get some instruction.

While, yes, you’re missing some cable housing, this is the **wrong type of lever** — it’s a supplementary **inline brake lever** that is installed **in addition to** your primary lever (usually a drop-bar road-bike lever). Most commonly seen on cyclocross/touring/gravel bikes.
You need to buy a proper flat-bar brake lever.

It’s brakes. if you’re this far off, go to a bike shop and get it fixed. It’s simple and shouldn’t cost much.
