Follow up on my previous build in progress post.
I wanted a summer project and a casual bike to ride besides my Trek Checkpoint. I also figured it would be nice to have a spare bike around for my partner to ride. Over the past few months, I’ve been picking up old bikes on Facebook Marketplace to tinker with and learn the ins and outs of bike maintenance. Some were total junk, others just needed a little love. I ended up donating the better ones and a bunch of spare parts to a local build-a-bike co-op in my City.
In the end, I held onto a Trek 930 and a Trek 800 frame, along with a box full of salvaged parts I figured I could use. I turn the 800 into a personal project and experiment with a custom paint job. I had it sandblasted locally and came up with a loud ‘90s theme inspired by Trapper Keepers and Saved by the Bell with that bold school supplies aesthetic.
The result isn’t perfect, but it’s been a fun and creative process. I’ve learned a lot and already start planning another ridiculous theme build for the 930, maybe something like a Windows 95 retro pixel art concept. The build will include some type of bars for up right ridings as that was my initial intent but my partner has never had a drop bar bike and she wanted to try it.
