  1. havent cycled down the east lancs for years (used to cycle commute from liverpool to wigan via this and return home via parbold – past maghull and turn off at the end of dunningsbridge road by the freeport.

Crank hill was always a b*rd to climb (heading in the manchester direction, after you pass the m57 slip road and the roundabout you pass a petrol station maybe 2km down. At the junction here a right turn goes to st helens, a left goes toward rainhill/rainford (i forget – been over 7 years) whilst a left and then immediate right takes you in to crank and all of those country lanes. From what I can remember, after the crank hill climb – short but very steep the first junction / road split you get to – there used to be a nursery / day centre straight ahead – taking a left will just have you going in circles but turning right will head through billinge. options for 2 ok climbs and descents because you can climb up through billing and then cross over the main road at windy arbour, pass over the motorway bridge and there is maybe a 2km descent – or you can go the opposite direction.

A full loop from wally hall park – east lancs to wigan and then on to parbold (descent) and back along the a59 i think – you pass ormskirk, dunningsbridge road and along west derby road turning up at millers bridge – then you have a good 80 to 85k training loop – with the option of an emergency train home at wigan or further along at ormskirk and maghull
