(bright music) – Welcome to York, an incredible walled
city in northeast England founded by the ancient Romans. We loved spending three
days exploring the history and architecture that
now blend beautifully into modern life. We went for afternoon tea at Betty’s, had a Yorkshire pudding
wrap, explored the Shambles, and finished with the
National Railway Museum. This is our second vlog
in our UK road trip series as we make our way up to Scotland. If you’re new, I’m Brogan, and this is my husband Benji. We love exploring the UK and
hope you’ll hit subscribe and enjoy coming along on our adventure. We have just arrived in York. It’s a Saturday, it’s race day. It’s very busy outside. We had a little issue with the parking, but we’ve checked into the hotel early, two hours early, actually. We’re at the Hampton by
Hilton, York Piccadilly. The room is so lovely. We’ve got this lovely bed, big TV, we’ve got a mini fridge,
gorgeous bathroom. Just a really nice space for us and perfect for three nights. So we’re spending four days
here, which we’re very excited. It’s our first time in York. It’s raining, so just switching from my
sandals to some trainers to be practical. And the first thing we wanna do is head straight to the Shambles, go and explore, have a
Yorkshire pudding wrap. That’s like the highest thing on my list. I’m not massively hungry right now, but I’m sure we’ll get there. And then we need to
shimmy the parking around. So we’ve booked a car park
from six o’clock this evening for the next four days, but we need somewhere
temporarily between now and then. So that’s the plan. We’re really looking forward to spending some time here in York. We’ve heard good things. Everyone has said to us for
years, “You’ll love York.” And we’ve talked about coming
here for years, haven’t we? – [Benji] Yeah. It’s
got so much character. – So much. You’re gonna
love all the history. Oh, there you are. We don’t have an awful lot of plans. We are going to watch
the Euros final tomorrow, so we’re filming this quite
a few weeks in advance. We’ve got afternoon tea at
Betty’s booked on Monday. So you’ll see that later in this vlog. – We’ve got Sunday roast
booked for tomorrow. Like three or four places that
we’ve got on our list to go. I’m sure plans always change, don’t they? – Lots of shops, a book shop. There’s a mini golf, if you want it. Really excited. So if you are new, welcome. We’re very excited to have you. Let’s go and explore York! – Let’s do it. – [Brogan] Okay, we’ve just arrived, and this is the first little
glimpse of York we’ve got. People are queuing to go into
the JORVIK Viking Centre. – Crazy golf for later. – Oh! Oh wow, look at the little umbrellas! That’s cute. I left my umbrella in the car. I was like, “It’ll be fine!” – [Benji] There’s loads up here! Look! – There’s loads of umbrellas
just above my head. Yeah, great. This is the Home and Fragrance Outlet. The store’s closing, so. We’ll have a little look in there. Just spotted all these little
Disney ornaments in the sale. How cute! – [Benji] Look at Mickey, Minnie- – [Brogan] Minnie and Daisy? Let’s just have a little look. I love these Jim Shore ornaments. How cute is that? The traditions ones. (Brogan giggles) It’s got your name on! They’ve got loads of Yankee
Candles and home bits in here. It’s very cute. If I could only have
one, I’d like this one. Mickey and Minnie in a hot air balloon. So that’s where we parked, Coppergate. Just around the corner. This is so pretty! Look at these buildings! This looks promising for
the start of the Shambles. And I really wanna go in The
Shop That Must Not Be Named. Oh, Benj just spotted the Christmas shop! It’s called The Nutcracker Christmas Shop. – Is this the same one from Barcelona? – [Brogan] I don’t think so. – What’s better in July than
a little Christmas shop, eh? – [Brogan] In the rain though, it’s cosy! That is so cute! Why do I love that? – [Benji] It is sweet. – [Brogan] I love that. – [Benji] We have nothing else
like it on the tree though. – [Brogan] You’re coming home with me. If I could take all of this
home, I absolutely would. Look at the Santa, Mr.
and Mrs. Claus kissing, and then look, he’s holding
little hands like a heart. So, so cute! I love it! Oh look! Honeymoon and wedding ones. – [Benji] Oh yeah. – [Brogan] Oh they’re cute, aren’t they? We haven’t got wedding ones yet. Only Disney ones. No, Benj look! Our honeymoon was on a cruise. – [Benji] That is true. Are they? Is this the plan? – [Brogan] Sorry, but we need that one. – [Benji] We definitely don’t. It’s a bit Groovy Chick for me, I think. (Brogan laughs) Do you know what I mean by, do you remember Groovy Chick? – [Brogan] Of course I did! My whole room was covered in it. – I was gonna say, you
definitely had Groovy Chick. – [Brogan] So you can personalise these and put anything on them! That’s fun. No, but that does actually look like us. – [Benji] Why does that
kinda look like us? You and your little ponytail,
me with a big hat on. Me definitely with the map. – [Brogan] You with the map. – [Benji] And you going, “I dunno.” (Brogan laughs) This is my vote. – [Brogan] Yeah, I like that too. – [Benji] Little rocking horse. – [Brogan] Yeah, cute. – [Benji] Coming home with me? – Yeah. There is an upstairs. Naughty or nice? β™ͺ First day of Christmas
my baby said to me β™ͺ If I had my own Christmas tree, I would fill it with this. How pretty! So pretty, that, and the Nutcracker. Love! This one is called The
Society of Alchemists. Oh my goodness! – Hi!
– Hi! Oh, that is nice. Look, Benj. The eyes on the top
there, they’re blinking! You are a sucker for a
candle, and a themed shop- – Yeah. In like, October, when you’re getting all- – [Brogan] Cosy in our new lounge. – Autumny. – Okay, well we have to agree on a scent. What is it doing? Look at his eyes, Benj. I will say we are here
on a Saturday afternoon, and it’s busy, but we don’t mind. We’re just happy to be pottering
around, and it is raining, so popping in and out of all
these little shops is so nice. I absolutely love it! – Oh, a slivery little snake. A slivery little snake. – [Brogan] ] The creativity. Little bits of bone candy sticks. So I do want to go in the wizard shop, The Shop That Must Not Be Named, but there’s a huge queue outside, so we’re gonna come back to that. The Ghost Hunt of York. Here you go, Benj. – Absolutely not. Absolutely not! – [Brogan] Not even if we paid you? – Not, I mean yeah, if you paid me. – [Brogan] We’re gonna go
in this little gift shop. We’re looking for pins, aren’t we? If we can find any. Always looking for pins. Are you gonna fit in there? Oh! (Brogan laughs) All these shops are quite hard to film in, ’cause they’re so small. But this is a little viking shop. Oh wow! This is neat. Look at the fake flames! There’s like a Potions Cauldron Shop. There’s so many, like, quaint ones. – We just said, we’re probably gonna
come back Monday morning when it should be a little bit quieter. – Yeah, we’re doing our
best with what we can. Just turned the corner to a full market! How cute is this? Wow! This is just called the Shambles Market. (calm acoustic music) There is a stall with about
a thousand pin badges. Oh my god! This is amazing. Yes, please. (calm acoustic music) Right, we found our York
Roast Company wrap place. This is what we want. He’s got the goods! Benj went for turkey, I went for beef. So we added potatoes for
a little extra, didn’t we? Was it a pound extra? – [Benji] Yeah, not not
gonna have potatoes now, are we? – It’s gonna have potatoes. Up against the wall. Oh my gosh, I’m so excited. – [Benji] Mm! – So good. I’ve been thinking about this for ages. – And they do do a veggie roast as well. There’s a veggie option. – And they don’t just do wraps. You can get sandwiches and a bowl. – [Benji] A cardboard bowl of it as well. – You can get the Yorkshire
pudding in the bowl, if that makes sense. Which is another option. We actually get these at the Christmas market in Bournemouth, if you’re ever in
Bournemouth at Christmastime, we have them there, and
they’re amazing too. But this is great. Finding the pins! Oh yes. Although a lot of them say London! We’re looking for York ones, not London. So we’ve got about half
an hour of just mooching, but we’re going to the
York Chocolate Story, which is just around the corner. And we’re gonna do the guided tour. I booked it online five minutes ago, and found a code online
which made it 15 pound each. It’s apparently a really
great little experience, and we thought it might be
good to get us out the rain. So that’s what we’re gonna do next. In the meanwhile, we’re just
looking for souvenirs still. Another souvenir shop,
for pins and postcards. The church bells are so lovely! – The bells! Bells! (church bells ring in the distance) – Can you hear it? I hope you can hear. There’s your Fudge Kitchen. We’ve been enjoying that, if you watched the Cambridge vlog. Ooh, nice! – I like the lemon shirt as well. Look at that. – Oh, I can’t see it. Oh! On that mannequin there. Oh yeah. That’s nice. Look how beautiful! Wow! They have literally just
stopped ringing the bells. But you can see how gorgeous this is. It’s such a shame it’s
not a blue sky, but, we can appreciate it nonetheless. We’re just saying we need
to learn the differences between churches- – Chapel.
– And minsters. – A chapel, ’cause a chapel
was what we saw yesterday, wasn’t it? – Yeah.
– In Cambridge. And that’s a private place of worship. – Oh! – [Benji] Oh no! – I just had a kid jump in
a puddle right by my foot. Look at this. Oh no. Over my suede shoes. Benji’s gonna try and get out
some of it with a wet wipe. Aw, thank you babe. It’s actually working! You are such a good husband! We can listen to the
bells as we stand here. (imitates bells) Alright, here’s The Chocolate Story. Five star visitor attraction. It smells absolutely incredible. They’ve got a cafe and a shop back here, and we’ve just come in here. Did you pick up a leaflet? Amazing. Let’s have a little look. – [Benji] Says it’s scratch and sniff. – [Brogan] Oh wow! This looks exciting! I’m looking forward to this. – [Benji] 4,000 years
of chocolate history. – [Brogan] Ooh! (chill beats music) – [Documentary Narrator]
The recipe for chocolate passed to the Spanish court, where it was guarded for 100 years. – Xocolatl, which is
Mayan for “bitter water”. – Yes it is, got a bit of chilli in there. – [Tour Guide] A little taste there, guys. Don’t worry if you (indistinct). – No. – Immediately no. Immediately no! Montezuma drank up to
50 cups of this a day. – Got a little Quality Street. – Strawberry cream, vanilla … Those of us who like Kit Kats. I’m hoping we all do, ’cause
we’re gonna get some soon. They were made at the Rowntree factory, run by Mr. Joseph Rowntree. (chill beats music) – [Brogan] This is so cool! (chill beats music) – [Tour Guide] Cheers there, guys. What’s gonna happen, I’m gonna move the
chocolate here and put a, scientifically classed, a splodge of chocolate on the bag itself. Once the bag has been splodged, you get the side of the tray, and you give it a very quick one, two, shakes of the actual tray itself. Get the stick that you got. You put the stick in horizontally, and when we put the stick, guys, twirl the stick around. (chill beats music) – [Brogan] We’ve just finished our Chocolate Story experience. We’re just looking through the gift shop. What did you think of the experience? – So good! – [Brogan] Yeah? – I didn’t, again, I didn’t really like, understand how it would
be that fascinating, (indistinct) here’s some chocolate, but no, it was really good. And the guy who did the tour, Lee, really is so passionate
about it, wasn’t he? – He was. – We went at the start, we’d go around the group and say what our favourite chocolate was, and he knew a little fact and the- – The year it came out. – The start date of
every single chocolate. – Yeah. So good.
– Very very impressive. – I just really liked
learning about chocolate. It’s something we both really enjoy. But you don’t always stop
and appreciate, like, I know how chocolate is obviously made, but just the detail and
the things we learnt and the marketing. – Yeah. How long each
brand has been going for. They’ve been going all, pretty much all of them have been going for over a hundred years. – And the founding families
that actually started them. Now we’re gonna just do a
little bit more mooching, and then- – Very slowly walk back to the car. – Yeah. – And we gotta move the car. – My favourite thing is to
always make sure you look up. Look at the buildings. Sir Thomas Herbert, Bart, born in this house in 1606. It’s a little bit quieter
walking around here now. But look how cool the buildings are! We’re in the Harry Potter shop. It’s all stuff we have seen before, so it’s not like it’s anything special. It’s all Harry Potter things, obviously. They sell butter beer, basically. – [Benji] They definitely don’t. For legal reasons it’s
definitely not butter beer. – [Brogan] It it is obviously spellbound- – [Benji] It’s butterscotch beer. – [Brogan] Butterscotch beer. – [Benji] There we go. First taste of your butterscotch beer, that has no resemblance
of any wizard-based films. – Warner Bros. – [Benji] Or books. – Oh, okay. Yeah, it’s … It’s obviously not the same, but it’s got the same flavours. It’s just more like a watery drink. It’s not as thick, obviously. You could mix the cream into it, yeah. If you want to. Benjamin! You are so naughty sometimes. Right, now I’ve been drinking
that for a few minutes, I’ve decided it’s not worth your time. Just not it. Not close. It was a good effort, but not close. We have parked our car at a
place called Q-Park Shambles, which we’ve paid for the
full length of our stay here. – Re-mortgage the house. How’s this gone? – It was 71 pounds. – And before you say anything,
there is nothing else. – Yeah, I’m actually
flagging a little bit. It’s been a very busy few days. I’m ready to have a little bit of food, and then go relax in the hotel. – I’ve enjoyed our little
walk round, though. It’s been nice, hasn’t it? – First impression, it’s been lovely, although minus the rain. They can send that away. – Do you know what it gives me vibes of? A northern version of Bath. – Okay, yeah. Very similar to Bath. – The sandstone buildings. Age of it all. – Yeah.
– That’s really nice. – We have been to Bath, if you wanna go and watch our Bath vlog, I’ll leave that linked below. And obviously our next one is Edinburgh, so it’ll be really interesting to see how we compare them all. Not that they’re
comparable, but just like, what we think and feel. – Similarities. – And which ones we like best. But so far, on a couple of hours in York, it’s been lovely. It’s been more than lovely. I’ve enjoyed it very much. My battery’s flashing. Let’s rock and roll. – Your battery’s flashing as well. – My actual battery! My camera. My mental state. – Good chat. Turrah! – Off we trot. We’ve done absolutely zero research. We just saw that this looked
like a nice curry place. So we’ve come in. Quite fancy a curry. – We never normally do this. We were gonna go somewhere
else near the hotel, and then we walked past
and we smelled the smell of the Indian. Looked in, there’s a couple
in the window having a curry, and we just said, all right, “Ooh, fancy a curry?” And you were like, “Yeah, all right.” – [Brogan] Yeah. – So no research. This could be a one star. I don’t care. We just fancied it, and it smelt nice, so. – [Brogan] Easy. – Yeah. Funsies! – [Brogan] There are loads
of people eating behind me, but I just wanted to show you how nice the restaurant looked. It’s so lovely in here. Here’s our curry! Benji’s got butter chicken. – I’ve never had butter
chicken in a restaurant before. – [Brogan] I’m sure we have. – I don’t think I have. – [Brogan] Well I definitely have. – [Benji] I always have a dopiaza. – You do normally. I’ve got a korma, my favourite. Garlic naan. Peshwari naan. Perfect! Finished our (indistinct) it was lovely. – That was gorgeous! – Really nice. Staff are lovely. – I didn’t know I needed that. That’s exactly what I needed. – I think we’re just gonna
head back to the hotel, chill, and we’ll make a plan for tomorrow. – Yeah. – So we see you again in the morning! Good morning. It is day three in York. We didn’t vlog yesterday. Well, we filmed some bits for you. But mostly our day was
spent with some friends to watch the Euros final. Which we’re not gonna talk about. – Nope. – But in the morning, we
went out on a little walk, had a little little look around, and it was absolutely chucking with rain. So we decided to go to
The Hole in the Wand, which was recommended to us
as a little mini golf place. What did you think of the mini golf? – [Benji] Hmm. The theming was nice. It was very nicely
themed, Harry Potter-wise. It’s just a kid’s course. – [Brogan] It’s not built for adults. – No. It’s certain rooms
you can’t even really fit in to access the ball. I think great for kids. If you’re gonna be playing it as an adult, you’ve gotta be a proper
diehard to really enjoy it. If you go for-
– Yeah. – Don’t go for the golf,
go for the theming. – The theming was nice, but the actual golf was just, I think because we’ve
done so many better ones and much more advanced,
with like cool technology, I was expecting a bit more. But it was only about eight
pound something per person. Then we had another little mooch around, went in the Christmas shop, which is the exact same Christmas shop we found in Barcelona. So we were very excited about that. – [Benji] Kathe Wohlfahrt. – Yeah, there we go! Good effort. So yeah, it was beautiful in there. So pretty, lots of gorgeous decorations. We picked up another couple, so we’ve got quite a few
new Christmas decorations on this trip. We then went to The Botanist. – Yes! – [Brogan] Which we
booked for Sunday roast. And we had a really amazing meal there. The food was absolutely stunning. – [Benji] So good! – [Brogan] Yeah. The meats and
the Yorkshire puddings and- – [Benji] Nice veggies. – [Brogan] Yeah. The cauliflower cheese. – [Benji] Really really
elevated, wasn’t it? – Really good. So that’s what we did yesterday, and today we are blessed
with some sunshine. Thank goodness!
– We can see the sky! – We are gonna go for
another mooch around. We’re gonna walk around the walls, and go and see the- – Minster. – Minster. That’s it. We’re gonna go see the minster. And then this afternoon, we’ve got afternoon tea at
the world famous Betty’s. – It’s probably the thing
we’ve been recommended most out of any of the stops. – Yeah. Betty’s got
recommended to us loads. We booked it about two months ago. And I’m very excited. So that’s the plan. Let’s go do the day. Our last full one in York. – Nice. – So they do actually have a breakfast that’s included at the Hampton by Hilton. We had it yesterday. It was really nice. They have everything,
including crumpets and waffles. But we decided today we
wanna try somewhere local, and we were recommended a
place called Brew and Brownie. So that’s where we’re gonna
go for breakfast today. We also obviously have afternoon
tea, which will fill us up. – A bit more like it. – This is a bit more like it. The Shambles with nobody in it, really. This is so much better than Saturday! Obviously we knew it was busy
when we came on Saturday, but. Lovely! – [Benji] Photo time. – Let’s take some pictures. I’m so glad we had time to come back here, ’cause this is a completely
different experience. I feel like I can appreciate the cobbled streets and the
quirkiness of the buildings and the history and the age of it all, it’s really beautiful. – [Benji] Look at this! Are we in Disneyland or are we in York? We should get on. Oh no, we’re not getting on! We’re not getting on, bub. – [Brogan] What’s wrong? – [Benji] No seat belts. Not a chance. I don’t have a death wish. – Oh, I can’t believe we’re
still hunting out a carousel. We love a carousel, don’t we? – [Benji] Yeah. – Oh, look how pretty that is over there! – [Benji] He’s just peeking out. Ooh! Ooh! (indistinct) minster! – [Brogan] Look how gorgeous this area is! – It’s a little reminder that York was a big Roman
powerhouse back in the day. It’s still got a Roman
bath underneath the pub. – [Brogan] Roman bath. Roman bath museum beneath the pub. Oh wow! That’s so cool!
– How cool is that? – [Brogan] Look at this! – [Benji] I love the windows. – [Brogan] Yeah. Beautiful. Roman bath. Wow! And this little cobbled area down here leads to the minster, and look! It’s so pretty, all the brickwork. The quirkiness around each corner. So cool. Oh look! – [Benji] Oh, perfect! – [Brogan] Oh, that is very helpful. Hold on a minute. – [Benji] So we should search that out. – Look, there’s loads
of stuff to look for. We haven’t even touched yet. Oh my gosh! I always knew that there would be locations that we were there during a busy time or a weekend. But if you can come on a weekday, it is- – Or over a weekday. So like weekend to a weekday. – Like, yeah. Even a Friday or a Monday. This is just a completely
different experience, ’cause we can really
see the buildings and- – Take our time. – We’re seeing more. Yeah, we would never have spotted that map with the crowds of people. So I’m really enjoying this
nice little stroll this morning. What a lovely day! And I’m so grateful for the sunshine. – We’ve earned it, I think. – Yeah, it was horrible yesterday. – Two days of rain. – It was so miserable. But today it’s lovely, and
we’ve met some lovely viewers. So as always, we just wanna say thank you so much to everyone that says hello to us. We absolutely love taking
pictures and chatting. Makes our day, doesn’t it? – It’s nice putting faces to
names and things like that. – Yeah. So lovely. So we’ve just passed Betty’s
where we’re going later. We also have The Ivy here, and they have a Miller and Carter, which is one of our faves. Looks like Miller and Carter
are in the old post office. Look how cool that is! I love seeing the old names on the buildings that they’ve kept. Look at that! The old bank! That is so pretty. Here’s our breakfast
spot, Brew and Brownie. How lovely. I like the sound of the
toasted banana loaf, and the cinnamon buns. Oh my god. Ooh. I don’t know what to have! And they have toasties. (gentle acoustic music) Here’s what we’ve gone for. Benji’s got a bacon toasty. We’re gonna share this. What’s it called? – [Benji] A cruffin. A jam and custard cruffin. We had it in Arendal a few years ago, and we’ve never had it since. – [Brogan] Custard raspberry. And then I’ve gone for this
sort of, what’s it called? The blueberry and pecan, I think. Danish. – [Benji] Yeah, something like that. – [Brogan] Yeah. And I’m gonna have a bit
of your toasty as well. Oh, and we’ve got smoothies. – [Benji] The smoothies
are amazing, by the way. – [Brogan] Peach and raspberry. Yeah. – So good. – Lovely. That was an absolutely glorious breakfast at Brew and Brownie. – So good.
– So lovely. – There’s a queue outside now. – Ooh! Okay so this is the, what’s this called? Multangular Tower? This says 2000 years in two miles, so you can do the whole lap of the walls. Oh, we’re right by the minster. Okay. There must be a route that you can walk. – Yeah. – [Brogan] There’s lots
of tours around there. – They all walk inside the walls though. Then we’ve obviously got
the town inside, haven’t we? – [Brogan] Yeah, I agree. – And although not these walls, there would’ve been some
sort of wall or defence here from 71 AD, from when
the Romans were here. Then these would’ve probably
been put up around 400 AD. Again, may not be these exact walls, but along this route there would’ve been some sort of defences. Here you go. And I think this shows
the layers of the wall. So this is where the Roman
bank would’ve come to. The Dark Ages bank would’ve been from the fifth century
to the 10th century. And then the Norman Bank from the 11th century to the 12th century. The stonework above there
would’ve come afterwards. So you can see all the layers of history. First to the fifth, to the 10th, and then onwards. All in one little
corner. How cool is that? Strong possibility that we may have gone to the wrong Brew and Brownie. We’ve got the Brew and
Brownie bake shop here, which is where we went. And then you’ve got another
Brew and Brownie here. – Thanks for the recommendation. We now recommend Bake Shop to you. – [Benji] We’re team bake shop, so. – That was good! – [Benji] And then, pa-blam! Minster. It’s so impressive, isn’t it? Where it just rises out of the buildings. I think this is an old hospital. How the architecture changes, all the old red brick. – Wow. Look how gorgeous this is! It looks so much nicer in the sunshine. So much detail. It’s absolutely huge as well. Right, we’ve come down to the Bootham Bar, which we drove past last night. We are here, just around
the corner from the Minster, and you can actually go upstairs. So we will do that. See what the view’s like up there. Wow, we did not realise that
this is actually quite a walk. It’s a lovely walk. I just didn’t realise that we
would be doing all the walls. There’s so much greenery
as well around here. Lots of the parks are preserved, and Benj was saying that these ruins have been preserved so well as well. ‘Cause there’s not many
cities that we’ve been to, or areas. I know like Arendal, wasn’t it? Had the walls. – Yeah. – But there’s not been many that have big walls all round like this, that are still intact, anyway. – And that a city can still
thrive inside of as well. – Yeah. Oh my goodness. This looks like something
outta Bridgerton, doesn’t it? Look at all the gardens. All the old houses, and the
minister in the background. – [Benji] You’re saying minster, right? – [Brogan] Minster. Minister. – [Benji] Yeah. Not minister. – Minster.
– Minster. – [Brogan] Oh my gosh. This is teeny tiny! You can get so many different angles of this gorgeous building. Oh my gosh. The York Minster Conference and Banquet, Banqueting Centre. St. Williams College founded in 1461. Blimey! Wow! You can actually watch them carving. How cool is this? In their stone yard here. I love that. We’re gonna pop into Fudge Kitchen and get some more of our fudge again. – Just get it into its final shape. ‘Cause once it decides to set, it sets quite quickly. – [Benji] Got you. (people chatter in the background) – [Brogan] Success! – [Benji] Got the goods. – [Brogan] We’ve got the goods. So this is our favourite little
road trip snack right now. – We were telling the guy that we loved it so much in Cambridge that we’ve come back
here, and he was like, “Where are you going next?” We’re like, “Edinburgh.” He goes, “Oh, we got one there as well!” (Brogan laughs) – [Brogan] So watch the next vlog so you can see us get more there. So Benj just taken us down Peter Lane. Is this meant to be the smallest … – And then it’s like, (indistinct) Alley. – [Brogan] Okay. Wow! What a tourist attraction. This is … – Well, not everything we do is a success. (Brogan laughs) – We are ready for afternoon tea. Little bit more dressy than earlier. And we’ve got our nice little outfits on. Yeah! – Ta-dar! – Ta-da! And it’s sunny outside, so we can go and enjoy
a nice leisurely stroll to the restaurant. – Some more mooching. – More mooching. – Each time we’ve headed out, we’ve gone a different
direction, haven’t we? So we’re trying to like, spread ourselves out through everywhere. – Yeah. I’m excited. This will be really nice, so let’s go! Wow! Betty’s has got a queue. Good job we booked. (chuckles) Okay, we’ve come upstairs, and Benj is just studying
the afternoon tea. – Yeah. I’m trying to work out
my pathway through the menu. – [Brogan] Fair enough. Here’s the selection. So we’ve got savoury and sandwiches, scones, cakes, and then we can pick our teas. I love afternoon tea so much. – Cheers, bubba! – [Brogan] Cheers! Here’s my afternoon tea. Also, I don’t know if you can hear, there’s someone playing
music in the background. It’s currently James Bond. (hums along to tune) There’s actually a pianist there, and I think that they’ll play. They might be taking a little break. But, got my tea, got my Prosecco, got my husband. What a time to be alive! – [Server] These are fully replenishable. – [Brogan] Wow. – [Server] So when we’re
checking in on you, if you’d like another plate, or there’s something
particularly (indistinct), do let us know. – [Brogan] Amazing. – [Server] Are there any questions? Are you diving in? – [Benji] I think we’re good. – [Brogan] No, we’re gonna go straight in. Thank you!
– Please enjoy! – [Brogan] Thanks! Wow. So we’ve got a little tartlet
and little mini quiche here. We can have as many sarnies as we want! – It’s the best bit. (piano plays in background) – Pianist is playing now. Cheers. (chuckles) Wow! So far we’ve had the salmon and the egg, and they were both amazing. – [Benji] You can taste the
caramelised shallot, can’t you? That’s really nice. – I’m really happy. The sandwiches were
all absolutely amazing. I’m gonna go in with our
little strawberry scone now, and already I love the size of these. Like they’re not too big. ‘Cause you know, scones are quite doughy, and they can fill you up. That is lovely! It’s got like, sugar on the bottom. Or top? No, that must be the top. – [Benji] Yeah. (Brogan chuckles) – Wow. – [Benji] I don’t think I’ve ever had a strawberry scone before. – I don’t think I have either. (gentle piano plays) He’ll send you off to sleep. (indistinct) We’ve finished. It was amazing. – [Benji] So good. – So nice. – [Benji] I normally struggle
with the sweet things, but like, they were perfect. – I preferred the savoury. – [Benji] Yeah. – I love the savoury. I always like the savoury,
the mini sandwiches. The scones were nice.
– And the scones. – [Brogan] They’ve given
us some little chocolates to take away. Chocolate truffly things. Just having a little look at
what they sell in the shop. Ooh! They’ve got some nice things. Do you wanna go inside? Aw, that is a lovely mug! It looks like an Emma Bridgewater. – [Benji] Yeah, that’s what I thought. – I wonder if it is. It’s an Emma Bridgewater. Yeah, made exclusively for Betty’s. I was gonna say, you can sort
of tell the iconic design. Oh my gosh! Look how cute! And they have the macaroons,
and loads of other bits too. What did you think of Betty’s? – Amazing.
– It was amazing. – And like, I mean this
in the best way possible. It was so simple, but like, everything was executed so well. – Yeah it was. It didn’t have all of the
like, bells and whistles. It was a very classic- – Yeah. – Exactly what you expect
from an afternoon tea. – Perfect. It’s about half past three now, and because I was such a good boy, we get to go to the train museum. – The National Railway Museum. Yes. Because Benj wants to go, and we don’t think it’ll take too long. It’s free to enter. – It’s probably gonna be
awful for you guys to watch, but frankly, not that bothered. I really wanna go. – I’ll show you a train or two. And then we’ll see what we think. Oh, we haven’t been past
the river like this yet. This is nice. You can walk more of
the walls on this side. And I nearly booked us
here at the Malmaison, but it was a little bit pricey. But I really love their hotels, so if you were on a bit
more of a luxury budget, that one is stunning. Although I have to say, it doesn’t look very
stunning on the outside. But the inside is, I promise. So it looks like they’re currently doing a lot of renovation out the
front of the Railway Museum. Not sure if they’re doing some inside too. Quite possibly. – I think they got one of the
halls shut off at the moment. – [Brogan] Oh right, okay. Just as an FYI. – So it might not be like, full capacity. – [Brogan] They close at five. So we’ve got about an hour here. – 10 to five all days. – [Brogan] Wow. Is it just gonna be a
massive hall full of trains? Is that what we’re working with here? – [Benji] Hope so. (Brogan laughs) – [Brogan] He’s in his element already. (indistinct) Okay. I will admit, it is quite cool
to see all the old trains. This is really neat. – I wonder if Thomas is here. – This reminds me of the
Motor Museum in Beaulieu. – Yeah, very similar, yeah.
– That’s a good one. I like that, because there’s
a bit of everything there. And they have loads of cars outside, and loads of demos and all sorts. – 1830! – [Brogan] 1830? Wow. This looks like the Hogwarts Express. All aboard, platform
nine and three quarters! – [Benji] So this turntable is how they’ve managed to get all of the trains on the outside. If you look down, they’ve all got tracks. So they would’ve come in, I assume through these doors, come to the turntable, and then go onto each of
their little sections. That’s really, really clever. This is so strange. This train has the same nickname that I used to have at school. (Brogan laughs) – Really? Is that what they called you? – [Benji] No, not at all. Which is funny though, isn’t it? All aboard! So this is a southern railway
locomotive, or carriage. – [Brogan] Yeah. You can see inside. – [Benji] See the old carriages? How cute! So this is Mallard. I think this is a pretty famous train. I’ll read the sign and
regurgitate any knowledge. My theory was right, it holds, or held, the top speed for a steam locomotive of 126 miles per hour on
the 3rd of July, 1938. It was a bit of a zoomer, back in the day. So this is another famous locomotive. It was in the film
Chariots of Fire in 1981. – They have the Flying
Scotsman VR experience, which was seven pound per person. So we thought we’d give that a go. Can’t film that, for obvious reasons, ’cause we’re just gonna see
it through our headset thing. But we thought we’d see
what it was all about. It’s really nice in here though. – Yeah. – I can see why people
recommend coming here, ’cause it’s really cool
to see all the old trains. Oh my gosh, look at my
line on my forehead. I’ve just had a headset on my head, on my face for 10 minutes. – That was so unique! – It was cool, actually. I really enjoyed it. – Yeah. – I feel like there’s
still a long way to go with the tech, in terms
of like the screen. – Yeah, but you don’t need to see like, it’s quite blocky is what Brogan means. It’s like very, not pixelated, but like, it’s very like, basic animation. – Yeah. – But like, you can still
make everything out. It’s really cool. It’s more cartoony than like, realistic. But- – You’ve got a big line there too. – It’s more of like an
information kind of gallery thing. – Yeah. – It’d be very cool, I think, for like, I don’t know
what school years are, but for like teenage, early early teens, like 12, 13. – To make it interesting for them. – To understand science
and things like that, of how the steam trains
worked and things like that. – I had no idea how sort of special the Flying Scotsman was. – Yeah. I said it, I’ve always wanted to do it. – We can walk and talk. – This is not a new thing. But I definitely wanna do the London, the King’s Cross to Edinburgh- – Train. – Flying Scotsman thing, ’cause it probably
won’t be around forever. – I agree. – Things like that, steam engines, they’ll just be too expensive
to kind of keep running. So-
– We’ll do that. – I think we should do it
while it’s available to us. – If you’d like to see
us do that, let us know, and subscribe so you don’t miss us doing something fun like that. I feel like we should do
one where we can like, have afternoon tea on the train. – Yeah, for sure. I’d love to do the-
– That’d be nice. – Orient Express as well. – Yeah, me too. This train is so pretty. I can imagine that’s
where they’d have like, first class of people
eating on the tables, and the lovely little
lamps in the windows. – I still can’t get over
the fact that it’s free. – [Brogan] To come in here? Yeah no, I know. – What a great place to bring your kids on the summer holidays or whatever. – [Brogan] Yeah. Spend
hours looking around here. We’re just gonna go into
the Japanese train here. So it’s the only one I think
you can actually go inside, by the looks of things. – Ooh, that’s comfortable. – [Brogan] Yeah? – Lots of- – [Brogan] Lots of leg room! – All right. Tickets please, madame. – No. – You know we might be
travelling on a train like this within the next year or so. – [Brogan] We are wanting to go to Japan. We’re dreaming of going to Japan. – Nothing in the books, but it’s likely. It’s tippety top of our
bucket list, isn’t it? – [Brogan] Now we’ve been to
Hong Kong Disney, we’re like, well we need to get to Tokyo Disney. And if we’re doing Tokyo Disney, and Disney Sea, we
obviously need to go and- – I wanna see Kyoto and Osaka as well. – [Brogan] Me too! Our lovely friend Catherine was telling us all about it last night, wasn’t she? Aw! – [Benji] Ooh, some really cool merch! – [Brogan] Really nice! Do you love trains? Yeah, that’s a lovely jumper. I like that. (Brogan laughs) Along with your chef outfit
from Disneyland Paris. – Yeah, I’m getting quite the ensemble. – [Brogan] Yeah. Right. Something you might not know about Benj is he loves a little model
village, and a model railway. Model anything. Aw, look there! That train at the back there, look! It’s about to go in the tunnel. – [Benji] A train yard. They got some livestock. Look, you see how they herd the cows in? – [Brogan] Just think, someone would’ve had to have made this. Oh look, here’s a train! Aw, this is so cute. Look at this little village. – So this is what we had access to today. This bit.
– The great hall. – But I think this is shut. Oh, that would have been good. Seeing the collections. – [Brogan] Aw, yeah. – [Benji] And then also this is shut. So this is the science kind of thing. – [Brogan] They’re just improving it. – [Benji] Yeah. And then it looks like, this is what they’re
building over the road. – [Brogan] Ah, so that’ll be open soon. – [Benji] So expanding it even more. – You can also donate if you want to, which we’re gonna, ’cause
we thought it was great. Right. We’ve just had our third outfit change. I’ve gone for like, just cosy and comfy. I’m actually wearing leggings, because we have decided
we are gonna go and get Yorkshire pudding wraps again, because we don’t want a big dinner, because we obviously had
that lovely afternoon tea. – Amazing afternoon tea. – But we still want something. So Benj suggested we get the wraps again. I was like, “That is exactly what I want.” – Yeah. – Exactly! – We’re gonna go to
either Miller and Carter, or a pub that sells, that
sold really nice pies. – Yeah. – I’m just not hungry enough for that. – No, neither am I. We’re gonna be in
Edinburgh as of tomorrow, so make sure you subscribe
and don’t miss the next vlogs, ’cause I’m sure we’ll do lots
of lovely meals out there. But for this final meal here in York, we’re gonna go and get wraps again. I wanted to show you guys that
this was high on our list. This is exactly what we
wanted to do tonight, but didn’t realise that they’re
only open Tuesday to Sunday. Today is a Monday, so
we missed out on that. But it’s a really cool outdoor
independent food market. So I think that would’ve
been really perfect for us. But, next time. Okay, so we’ve come to the
other location they have, The York Roast Co. They actually have two. So we’re gonna get our wraps, probably exactly the same
as what we did before. You can see it all here. Lovely, lovely, lovely. They’re out of Yorkshire puddings! – The Yorkshire Pudding Wrap Company are out of Yorkshire wraps. Yorkshire puddings. – Oh, I didn’t want anything else. – Oh, there’s actual tears there. I’ll make-
– That’s all I wanted! – I’ll make it when we get home, yeah? – Please. It just won’t be the same though, Benj. Right, we’ve come to a
place called The Punchbowl, which has been a public house
in York since the 1600s, and apparently there’s
three ghosts here, so. – I hope the pies are fresh, and they’re not opening day ones. – [Brogan] Go on then, let’s get a pie. Pie in a pub. – Pie in a pub! – [Brogan] All right, we’ve got our pies. These look really nice. – Then we should do some
route planning, aren’t we? – [Brogan] For tomorrow, yeah. ‘Cause we’re on the road. – This is a proper pie. It’s got a base, it’s got a lid, it’s got a filling. – [Brogan] Yes. Benji doesn’t like the pies in the- – In a tin. It’s just a stew with a lid. (Brogan laughs) – This looks great. It comes with gravy. Yum! We are making our way back to the hotel. It’s been a really nice day. – Yeah, I’ve really enjoyed it. – I really enjoyed it. I really like York. I think we obviously had mixed weather. We’ve been sort of winging it as we go. And I would love to come back. I feel like there’s loads
we still haven’t done. I thought the hotel was good. – Yeah, good location as well. – Parking not ideal, but I don’t know of any hotels that have- – I feel like that’s everywhere, yeah. – For me, I loved my
Yorkshire pudding wrap. I loved Betty’s today. – Yeah. – And I also really loved the Shambles. What were your highlights? – I really enjoyed the
chocolate experience we did. Learning the history of chocolate. – Yeah. – Yeah, I really enjoyed
walking along the walls today. I’ve never done that
before, I don’t think. – Yeah, that was fun. – National Railway Museum was amazing. – Yeah, you enjoyed that today. – Especially for free as well! – I can’t say that was my highlight, but I did have fun. – No, not a highlight, but I really, it’s just
things that I really enjoyed. Obviously you’ve said three things that I would’ve said as well, so. – Yeah. – Obviously watching football
with Catherine and Dean, so that was nice. – Yeah, you guys didn’t see that, but that was lovely. – Yeah. It was really good to
catch up with some friends. Yeah, it’s just been really lovely. – It has been nice. I can see why so many of
you said we’d enjoy York. I have really enjoyed it. But tomorrow we go on up to Edinburgh, so that’ll be the next vlog. I’m really excited about Edinburgh. – Your first time in Scotland at all. I’ve done Edinburgh once,
over a long weekend, but that’s all. – I can’t wait to cross the border! – Yeah. – Will it be obvious? – Yes. Edinburgh is actually all blue. – It’s just-
– Yeah, everything’s blue. It’s crazy. People don’t talk about it much. Honestly, it’s crazy. – But when we’re driving, there’ll be loads of signs that say, “Welcome to Scotland” and stuff? – Yeah, there’ll be one. – And we’re gonna go past
the Angel of the North, which I’ve never seen. – Yeah. – I’ve never been this far up. – And obviously all the road signs will be in a different language as well, which will be quite cool. – What? No they won’t! Why are you winding me up? Well, on that note, thank you so much for watching. We hope you carry on enjoying
the rest of our vlogs and subscribe so you don’t miss them, and we’ll see again in the next one! – See you later.
– Bye! (bright music)

  4. I went to York for only one night on my 2018 UK trip! Stayed in the hotel on the corner across from the Minster. In about 24 hours I visited the Minster, walked the walls and got lost, explored The Shambles, ate at a lovely Italian place I stumbled upon, did a walk up at Betty’s and had a cuppa tea and a slice. I feel I didn’t get enough time there and would have been more enjoyable to not be alone. Super looking forward to watched the Edinburgh vlog as that was the highlight of my trip! ❀️

  5. Went to York in may always wanted to go and absolutely loved it πŸ₯Ή and got engaged in the shambles when no one was around under the little shambles sign ❀ such a special place xx

  7. York is absolutely one of the best places to visit and even though I’ve been many times you’ve made me want to book to go again! And you have absolutely missed some great other stuff to do in the area so you must visit again. Personally we love a premier inn on the outskirts as catching the bus into the city rather than parking in the city Centre.

  8. Me and my 10 year old son watched this vlog together and thoroughly enjoyed it. We are
Planning our own trip and researching together now. I have always loved all of Brogan’s videos but also loved Benji’s history lessons in this too! Thank you ❀

  11. I actually got lost in β€œThe Shambles” while on a school trip at junior school and taken back to the coach in a police car way back in 1970 and not been back since. So it was nice to be shown around in more detail.

  12. Hi Brogan, I’ve been watching you for years and I live not far away from York! I’m only just catching up on your vlog series after a busy few months and this inspired me to book a trip to York myself after not visiting for many years. We can’t wait and will be checking out some of the recommendations – especially the Yorkshire pudding wraps and chocolate shop!! A few people who are subscribed to you have also found my channel and started watching which blows my mind, but also have realised some live close to me which is so bizarre. Such a small world. Absolutely love your content, thanks for sharing these amazing vlogs. Chloe xx
