You could argue that the normal spd is less likely because it has more float (room for movement = room for error)
Either way if you are concerned about unclipping then just don’t ride clipless!

Neither one of those are SPD or SPD-SL. You have posted Look pedals. They are not the same.

My time atac pedals have been solid for years, before these I snapped the spring of a crank bros pedal. Road pedals and shoes collect dust waiting for long rides or the velodrome

If we’re talking about a cleats attachment that’s taken care well, I’d say spd sl. But for that to happen, you need to really inspect your attachment before you ride your bike. I’ve seen a buddy of mine unclipped once right before a huge downhill. Me and buddy was spooked lmao, even the car behind us honked because he thought my buddy’s about to die. I’m new to spd, and for these past 3 months i have not unclipped even once, and that’s 2/3 of the way on tension.

I mean if you want safety, get a brake. If you don’t, who cares 🤷🏻♀️

Probably a road cleat, but that’s a really expensive way to skid when [this chick](https://www.reddit.com/r/cycling/s/0Lfl37TfIJ) figured out how to do it without special shoes & pedals.

Just don’t choose Crankbrothers

SPD and the like have a lot of movement (float and tilt) especially when worn and a less defined clip-out spot in comparison to SPD SL.
They will survive skidding but easily disengage if you don’t have super-human control over your heels. I’ve clipped out countless times when doing wild whip skids or hopping over obstacles.
SPD SLs will wear out in a day if you do a bit of walking though.
So:
SPDs are great for walking and a bike with a backup brake.
SPD SL are the way to go if you ride as a sport and don’t really spend time if the bike.
Time Attac are what you are looking for for if you want to ride brakeless and do some walking.
Crankbrothers are fine if you push you bike to your photo location.

I use spd and never had a problem skidding. You can crank up the tension.
I’d go with SPD just for the walkability.

if you’re running more of a city build then SPD or any other MTB adjacent pedal set up (Time Atacs etc) over SPD-L
