When it comes to bikepacking, the space in our bags is often limited — unless you’re using pannier bags (💩), so space and weights are a precious goods. When I pack for trips, I like to pack multi use objects, so I don’t have to bring too much stuff and keep my setup and belongings minimalistic.

As in the title mentioned, I would like to know your objects of trust? Maybe things that aren’t common on a list when it comes to adventures in nature. I don’t mean obvious things like a pillow, water bottles etc., except it has something special to you.

For me it’s an IKEA bag. It packs quite small and you can take it if you’re taking a bus, car, train and put all your bags inside. Also I like to put my stuff inside it at night, placing the bag in the awning of my tent. I like to sit on it or use it – obviously as shopping bag.

So what is yours?

  1. I have an old osprey aether, the top comes off and can be used as a small pack, the neat part is that the straps keeping it on the bag fits very neat to put it on my handlebar as a handlebar pack. its very rain resistant and can hold everything i need to access quickly.

I dont know how common it is but headphones with podcasts/audiobooks have probably stopped me going insane a few times.

I do a lot of solo trips that are generally very remote and very difficult, often moving for 16+ hours a day. Having something to distract me from the pain or monotony of the day really helps my mood.

Also I ride with a running vest or 30l osprey talon velocity bag most of the time. People will act like wearing a backpack is the worst thing in the world, it doesn’t bother me at all.

You mentioned it in your question. My special item is panniers 😉.
They do away with the need to worry about space (weight isn’t really as big an issue as volume on a bike) and are super versatile when it comes to varying your load over a long trip.
Mine are old and battered and don’t really keep the water out so I have a dry bag that I use as a liner which kinda does what your IKEA bag does – let’s me keep my stuff in the tent without bringing in any debris and lets me use my kit as a cushion.

  4. Travel bidet was an absolute game changer for me. Gets you cleaner and has less impact on the environment.

I am always taking my littel camping chair from Decathlon with me. Fits perfectly in my panniers…👀
