The Roa Metropolis is home to over 600,000 people, many of whom work in the 19 sites of UNESCO World Heritage listed sulfur iron coal mine. This former mining area has been transformed into a vibrant district full of shops, restaurants, and museums. If you enjoy art, then you can’t miss the Folk Wang Museum. Housed in a former brewery, this museum features an impressive collection of paintings from the 19th century until today. If you’re looking for a fun way to get around town, hop aboard the Gillson Kurtchin, a small train that runs through the city center. The Gillson Kurchin is a great way to see the sites and learn about the city’s history. These four massive gasometers were once used to store natural gas, but are now home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and attractions. You can take a guided tour to learn about the history of the gasometers or simply explore them at your own pace. Don’t miss the panoramic views from the observation deck at the top of one of the towers. If you’re interested in attending an event here, be sure to book your tickets in advance as this popular venue sells out quickly. You can also visit the nearby hall which is a man-made hill that was created from mining waste. Today it’s home to a nature reserve and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. Take a stroll through the Phil Harmon. The first thing to do when you arrive in Essen should be to visit the Phil Harmon, which literally means Phil Harmonic Hall in English. Although it isn’t quite as grand as Berlin’s Phil Harmonic, it still deserves your attention. Built in 1981, this concert hall was the first major cultural building to be constructed in postwar Germany. Designed by cling architect Sir Norman Foster, the distinctive red brick design looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, don’t let its futuristic appearance fool you because inside you’ll find an old-fashioned concert hall. Visit the Folk Museum. Explore the Baldiny Tunnel.
