Looking for a 1x bike with tire clearance in the 38mm range around $2,000 CAD. I plan on doing a little bit of off-road riding, but not enough to warrant getting a full bulky gravel bike with unnecessarily high tire clearance. I've been leaning towards the Topstone 3 ($1,890 CAD) until I came across this new Allez that just dropped which just shook everything up for me.

The Allez comes with 2×10 CUES and hydraulic brakes starting at $1,600 CAD which is the cheapest I've ever seen for hydraulic brakes. For that scenario I was thinking of swapping it to a 1×11 CUES, which would only cost me in the range of $300-400 in parts (derailleur, cassette, chainring) since the stock 2×10 shifters are compatible from what I've researched. I'd do the labour myself.

Is the Allez conversion worth it? Only problem is the Allez can't clear more than 35mm tires, whereas the Topstone 3 comes stock with 38s and clearance for more (likely unnecessary for me atm). The Topstone does look way better though…

I recognize this is hella niche and specific so bear with me.

What is the actual value of conversion towards 1x? All MTBs that were 2x that I have ridden were in ‘little bit offroad’ conditions to my taste and I never had an issue with my chain.

I’d go for the Topstone if 1x is most important to you, otherwise with the Allez.
