Today’s ride was around the Bude area. I started my ride about a mile West of Bude. Then I rode along a bridleway that follows along the cliff top over looking the sea down towards the town. This track opens up onto some lovely sweeping fields eventually leading down to the start of the Bude Canal. I then rode out of Bude to Poughill, and found an excellent pub; the Preston Gate Inn – amazing food, great service and lovely friendly staff. The ride was only 10 miles and not as far as planned! It was still a lovely afternoon though, finishing along the Bude Canal.

Right, I’ve got up to the north coast and there’s a place that I love passing and I was hoping the flowers would be out in full display and this is an old farmyard. And just look at this for display. This is between Kington Haven and Woodmouth Bay, but you have to know how to find it. It’s along a very, very narrow lane. Just look at all this array of flowers. One chap, an old farmer who puts these out, grows these, nurtures these every year. Isn’t that absolutely beautiful? All the old farm machinery. Not sure if you can see that as well. But what a display. How much work must be involved. I’m not a gardener or a planty person, but my god, look at it all. Incredible. And there’s more over here across the road. Amazing. Hello. Right, I am in Bud just above Bud. Actually, I just went past Whidmouth Bay, which is which was on my left and heading in towards Bud. And I turn off just as you drop down into Bud, just over the brow of the hill, as you can see that van going down. I normally turn into here, and there’s usually a space along here. And you don’t have to pay for parking. You can stay here as long as you like. And I’ll show you which route I take. I go back up that road where you saw the van coming down. So, I go back up there about uh quarter of a mile and I’ll show you where the trail is. [Applause] Okay. Just approaching the brow of that hill. This hill is the bit that goes down into be. So you go through little place called Upton. And that’s just after you’ve gone cuz obviously you come from the other way after you’ve gone past Woodmouth. That’s on your left as I just said and that’ll be over that brow and then down towards be [Music] got a really quite a strongish onshore breeze today. So with the wind muff hopefully you can hear me now. On the right just here be careful you don’t miss it is a signpost which just says coastal path. And then it’s all pretty self-explanatory. Watch while you’re up here. You can see the trail. It’s not very far into be, but it’s a nice start to have a little ride and bimble around. I’m not sure where I’m going today. I normally end up only doing about four or five miles, but I’m going to try and do more today. I’d like to do 15, as I said earlier. There’s the sea. This trail just goes up to the gate. People are opening the gate for me, which is great. That’s kind of you. There’s nothing worse than having to keep stopping. I know. Opening shutting bloody gates. Yeah. Lovely. Thank you very much. So, as you can see on the left, nice views. We’ll go down this way. We go straight down the bottom there if you can see. Beautiful. It is supposed to clear up. Although in the distance over there, it’s chucking it down. You can see it. But we’re okay over this way. I’m not sure where that’s coming from. If it comes Well, I know where it’s coming from, but hopefully not towards us. I don’t have a waterproof. I have my windproof. Right, let’s go and let’s head down to the gate. [Music] The last time I came down here, hurtling down this bit, there were a load of sheep around the gate at the bottom. had to slow right up. Mind you, it could be wet because it’s been raining a lot, I think. No, we’re okay. There are the sheepses. Hello, sheepses. So, straight through here and straight up the other side. Bit of air. I don’t get much air, just a little bit. It’s an age thing. I never did, actually. I’m sure the taking off is okay. It’s just it’s just a landing. I’m going to stop at this bench. There’ll be lots of stopping. Still got the creaking from the back of the wheel, but I do have a new free hub coming maybe tomorrow or the next day. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] We’ll [Applause] have a sit here a minute. Yes, I know we haven’t been very far. Isn’t that lovely? I just wanted to get beside the sea. Yeah, you can see just there. Put it right in the center of the screen. It’s lashing down there. That’s further down along the coast into Cornwall. It could be perhaps tintagel. Maybe we’re okay here. Right. Time to sit down. Oh, I shall get into be. What time is it now? Oh, it’s 25 to 5. I shall have something to eat in or down beside the canal which I had last time I was here. I might go in there sooner than later, actually. We’ll see how it goes. Right, I’ll keep the camera going to the end of this trail that goes right down. You can see be all along here. We’re going to head down right if you can see. I think I’m pointing the right place. That’s nice. An outside swimming pool down there. Just in there. We’ll end up down there eventually. And there’s a tower thing there. You might be able to see that. It’s quite a distance away. As I said, I’ll keep this going and you can see how we get there. Hopefully, you followed this with me so far. It’s just all nice and sort of it’s it’s bumpy, but it’s quite smooth grass. You could take a lot um you could go along here with a gravel bike. I’m not sure not so sure about a road bike. Wouldn’t be so good. I’m sure this gate’s okay if you just put your bike up on its back wheel. Oh, somebody’s actually put a piece of rope around. This makes it a bit more awkward. We’ll get through. It’s not too difficult. Although it’s um an onshore breeze. It’s uh it’s quite warm. Okay, let’s head down to the bottom. Oh, straight down. Now, this is all the easy bit. Just nice whizzing along beside the sea. Lovely fresh air, sound of the sea. And I suppose you can hear that. We’ll go down this way. I think some of the school kids have broken up now, so there’ll be lots of little ones around. Mind you saying that, it’s later in the day anyway, isn’t it? Keep forgetting the time. I left home quite late. Right, you can see down the bottom where this outside swimming pool is. Few boats in the harbor. Tide’s in at the moment. We’ll probably get down there in a minute. Okay, let’s just carry on. Last time I was here, there was an onshore breeze and it was absolutely blowing a hulie and it was bloody cold. Couldn’t use the mic on the on the camera. It’s picking up too much wind noise. But with this buff, I guess it’s working well. Okay, good. It’s looking pretty busy. I think food could be bit of a challenge. I go to the end a bit easier. Go to the road. Don’t see if Bellyber is open today. He’s normally open on a Wednesday. We’ll check his opening times. It’s being a busier season time. He might be open. Let’s have a look. I think the last time I was here and I was filming this it was closed then, but it’s not normally open on a Tuesday. Are you open today? Cleaning. Pardon? Cleaning. Uh I know you’re not open. I know you’re not normally opening. I know you’re not open Tuesday. I just just wondered just No, it’s a big clean up today. Big clean on the grill. And are you open on on other days of the week now? It’s getting busier or not. Well, uh we are thinking about opening on Tuesday. Yeah. But um probably not this week. Have some got some time off. Sorry. No, I’ve just I’m cleaning. Yeah. I saw you there. No, it’s very boring. It’s supposed to be my day off. It’s got to be done though. It’s got to be done. Yeah. How’s business been? Been all right. It’s been all right. Since Easter, it’s been pretty steady, you know. That’s good. We’ve had quiet days, of course. Yeah. Yeah. Really sort of Easter’s busy and it hasn’t really dropped off that much. The weather’s been pretty good, isn’t it, too? Town’s been busy though. Yeah. So, um Yeah. Right. Okay. I’ll leave you to it. All right. Thanks. See you soon. See you later. Bye. So, Belly Burgers isn’t open today. I didn’t think it would be. As he said, it’s normally Wednesday. So, we’ll find somewhere else to eat. Want to find somewhere 5 to 5 on a busy day when the kids are off school. Some are it’s open. You can get some food. Everything’s shutting. Seriously, this bloody country is useless. Yeah. I think the last time I was here, I had a job to get food. Lots of shops in view. Never been here before. It’s a typical beachy place. They’re closing up soon. Shots at 5. Of course, people don’t want to eat that. Of course, people don’t want to eat that time of the day. I’m really not having much luck. Right, we’ll carry on looking. See if I can find something in desperation. I cycled out a be to a place towards we’re just trying to cycle the main road really to see if I can find a pub that might be serving food. I’m in a place called I think it’s Poff or Powell. It’s P O U G H I L. I think that’s how it’s spelled. Poff Nibude. Um it says there’s a pub here. I looked on Google Maps and I can just see a pub ahead of me. So, we’ll just cycle up there and let’s see if they’re open and serve food. What do you think? Answers below. I can see the pub. Feel like some decent food. It looked nice. It looked like nice food on the on the internet. I looked just now. Preston gate in. Is it open? Let’s find out. Looks a nice little pup. Well, it’s open. That’s a start. And find somewhere to hide the bike. That was a result. I found a pub called the Preston Gate in and it was in that village called Poffill which I just mentioned. So it’s that’s good. Ordered myself a steak, a nice rump steak and a non-alcoholic beer. 1664 Lago. See what that’s like. Not had that draft before. But anyway, we’ll see what this is like and I will update you when it’s served. Cheers. That’s a good beer. That’s quite nice. I must try and get some of that. An alcoholic. Brilliant result. Looking forward to the steak. Now that looks really good. I’ve got to say, I think that’s probably I’ve had in a pub. Or at least I do like this outside the pub, too. Just sums it up, doesn’t it? Anyway, I’m well fed. I’m going to ride on a little bit further just to see where it takes me to get a few more miles in. I’ve only done 5 1/2 miles. I’d like to do 10 at least today and see how it goes. had a nice pint had a nice pint of non-alcoholic or 005 alcoholic which these cars go by. Um 1664 lagger. It was really tasty. So I’m happy. I’ve had a cracking drink. I’ve had a cracking meal. Met some nice people opposite me. And the staff in this pub, honestly, they were so friendly and so nice. Thoroughly recommend to come here. Lovely place. I shall come back here again. I’ve had a little ride around to try and get some more miles in. I’m not doing that well. I’ve done 6.6. Don’t think I’m going to get 15. I’m going back into Poffill or Pill. I think it’s called Poffill. P O U G H A. Sorry, how’s it spelled? P O U G H I L. So, we’re going back down past the pub again and um yeah, just whiz around, I suppose, up along the coast and see what it’s like. Got to see the sea beside the sea. So, let’s see the sea. The sky is clearing a bit now. Slightly. Not very much, but a bit. It was supposed to clear earlier on, but it hasn’t done. But it’s warm. It’s lovely. I’ve got the wind against me and I’m not really cold. It’s just edging if another degree or so cooler and it would be quite cold, but it’s actually um it’s all right. Not bad at all. There are some nice little cottages here that I passed when I was cycling up just now. Just in here. Nice thatch property. Couple of houses in there. And then we got the pub that we’ve just been into which was, I must say again, bloody excellent. Really, really good. Right, that’s a bit safer. Got both hands on the handlebar. No cars behind me. I did see a bridal path on my left as I came up. So, that’ll be on my right. I might have a little look down there, unless I’ve already gone past it. I nearly went past it. I was going quite slowly actually. Little adventure. I don’t mind going downhill if it’s just a slight gradient, but you know you got to come back and it’s not too far. Sorry, not too steep, which this isn’t. I wonder where we’re going. Clunk. Sounded like something fell off the bike then. Don’t think so. I’ve got both wheels still. There’s quite a few properties. I wonder why there were lots of stones laid in the in the holes there. Some uh some um bike tracks there. Obviously, it’s used quite frequently. Do I carry on? I guess so. Yeah. As I was saying, there lots of stone have been put down where the all the holes were. And I wondered why. There won’t be now because I reckon that’s the last of the properties I just went past. This is quite nice. Well, I hope you’re enjoying this ride. I certainly am. Goes on quite a way. Where does it go? What’s that running away in front of me? Oh, pheasant. That made me jump. Came out from the hedge right beside me on my left. Now we’re headed back into civilization. I don’t know where on earth we are. I’ll take a left though. I guess that must take me back towards be. It shouldn’t be too steep because that was quite a flat run. I go back this way. I may get totally lost. Could be wrong. Just guessing. Just sitting here admiring all the little ducks and people come along here with their dogs even though the dog is on the lead and they still just let them chase the bloody ducks. What’s the matter of these people? How calm is this? This is a cracking day out. Actually, I still can’t get over how nice that steak was. Absolutely superb. I’m going to have my um protein bar. It’s my sweet [Applause] Haven’t got anything for you. Are you part of a a club? Yeah, we’re part of surf life saving club. All right. Right. Great. Brilliant. We’ve got a competition next, right? Nationalities, boards, swims, runs. So, where have you got to go for that? Is that from here? Way, right? Good luck. Yeah. Thank you. Hopefully hopefully the weather’s good for you. Yeah, I think it is getting better next week, I think. Yeah, who knows? I mean, this is it’s nice today actually. Well, it’s turned out all right this afternoon. I live at Cal near Taboo Tabby Way and I came up cuz it wasn’t that good there and it’s they said it was going to break and it’s looking nice now. Oh, wow. Amazing. This is delightful. Just sat here. They just all the all the women in there these canoes. These aren’t canoes, are they? I’m not sure what they’re called. They’re just training. They got to go to a um a race or something or the next weekend. They just tell told me um at Weimouth it’s a contest. So, they’re in training at the moment. All the ducks are here. Look. Can’t believe how that swan came up to me. Let’s get a closeup. It’s very black over that way. But I’m not over there. Maybe I have as well. I think when I’m also cuz they’re training for this, it’s like Right. Time to head back now. go back to the van and I shall cruise back. Been a cracking day. A cracking afternoon. In fact, it’s been a cracking day. Got work done. Got some editing done this afternoon. Oh, let’s put my headband on. Excuse me. Whizzing around with the camera. Yes, I know everything’s upside down. It’s hanging on the handlebars of the bike. Just bear with Right. You should be the right way up now. Still more people on the river on the canoe with the canoes. Bye. They all seemed a happy bunch. I think I could go this way. No, there’s a gate that way. Don’t do gates, as you know by now. There’s a nice mog. In case you don’t know, if you’re watching me from another country and you wonder what I meant, I looked at that car and said Mogy Thou, that’s what we nicknamed the car. It’s actually a Morris thousand and it came out in the 60s, late 50s, something like that. So, it’s a classic car, but they’re always known as the mogy ths. Blast to the top. Come on, legs. Yeah. And back to the van. I love it when it says recovery 13 hours. That means I can’t ride for 13 hours. I think you can actually ride. It just says or means no big exertion. Not too much strenuous. What’s a load of old rubbish? Anyway, that’s the end of the ride. Bear with me. Right. Where’s the ride? Where’s it gone? Here we go. Today summary. 1 hour 13 in the saddle. God knows how long out altogether. 10 and a half miles. So that wasn’t too bad. Average speed of 8.63. Maximum 28.4. Average cadence 68. It says a maximum cadence of 244. I don’t think so. Average heart rate 111. So, it’s just a mediocre ride. Maximum 139. That was just now actually elevation 961. There we go. Another 10 miles towards my what did we say? 260. So that means I’m on I was on 160. 167. Getting closer. Fingers crossed that I can do it. Anyway, that’s it. That’s the bike helmet bag. Me. Hope you enjoyed the ride with me. I loved it. It was really relaxing. It was really nice fun. It’s lovely to be down by the canal just now. That’s the end of this video. Be happy.
