Please share any insights or general build advice for these 3:
-
Singular Peregrine MK4 (£1200 frame set)
-
Surly Midnight Special (£4-500 frame set + Hope headset,
58cm) -
Rune Rufus Stone (£1250 frame set)
I've been having a lot of fun learning about bikes for the past year and looking for what might be the best option for my first build. Please share any insights on these three frames.
I'll be riding around the UK, Vietnam and all over Japan (not bike-packing)
initially, I was set on the Peregrine – it's beautiful, probably the best-looking bike l've come across. The Surly is a road-plus bike “designed for pavement, some gravel, and shittier pavement”, the Peregrine seems like the inverse: a gravel-capable bike that can carry.
The Rufus stone has pretty similar geometry and features to the Peregrine but with a quill stem.
I've been in touch with Sam, who's kindly offered to help build up any parts l'd struggle with – but the Surly seems perfect for Japan. and it's less than half the price, though it would be great to support Singular which is quite local to me.
I've always enjoyed hand me downs so this would be my first purchase and l'd likely be extremely happy with any. The wheel-set may even be more important to be fair.

Tan walls, matching seat and bar wrap, Surly frame. Sick build, well done.
All of these bikes will be good for a pavement tour in Japan with the right tires & gearing! You can basically build nearly the “same” bike with any of these frames.
Imho the Peregrine is the most interesting frame of these, and it seems you have a soft spot for it as well. The midnight Special is a good frame with a lot of fans but to me the Rune & Singular are much prettier and more “special”. Especially if you’re from the UK!
