Working on this stumpjumper and was trying to index the rear mech, however was having trouble shifting onto the highest cog. Noticed the hanger is bent, does it need repair or is this normal?
This needs repairing, but I am affraid it will snap Off or Break … This had a real blow on it …

It’s fixable but I’m not sure the frame is worth the investment based on those photos. It would need to be heated and reshaped by a frame builder.

Bend it back. Use wrench.

Yes, it excessively bent, but the good news is that this is an easy fix for a decently skilled mechanic, and it’s totally worth doing on a vintage steel Stumpy.

Steel stumpy? Cold set it with an adjustable spanner. We used to have to do this out on the trail, back in the day.

Not normal but fixable. Get a derailleur hanger adjustment tool. Clamp the wheel in there tight and use the tool to adjust it back in to alignment with the wheel. You might get some paint cracking from how knackered it is but that’s ok as long as the metal isn’t cracking too

You need a tool like DAG-2.2, there are fake ones at 20$ that work. First bend without the wheel until the dropout surface looks flat, then install and tighten the rear wheel and bend the hanger until it’s straight with the regular procedure.

I’d recommend to have a look again at this fine line at about 10 o’clock…this is in my eyes suspicious to be a hairline crack …
