Morning. It’s Friday the 18th of July and for the more diligent and obstit. So I’ve ridden from home into Nottingham station and I’ve got the 25 7 train to Shia board. Nice early start. Should get there about 8 and I’ve done that because it cuts out the busy bit from Nottingham to Mansfield. There’s a quite built up. Cycle ways aren’t always that great at this time in the morning. you got a lot of car crossing so it’s slow shy brook it’ll save me with 2 hours off my ride time and it’s not that much mileage really so I’ll leave Shy Brook and I’ll go to Baver and I’ll do the trans penine trail then and I look through Barnsley Wakefield leads along the canals to path trans penine trail really nice ride looking forward to it I did it last year it’s a bit cooler today than it’s been rec recently so possibly a few showers this afternoon, but I’ll press on and hopefully avoid those and I should get there 5 6:00 tonight hopefully. So, um let’s see how we go and I’ll pick some footage up as we go along the way. I hope you enjoy the journey. So, we arrived at Shy Brook and now we’re on this lovely bit of single track that takes us up towards Bolover. I cut this out of the last ride I did or didn’t cut it. I didn’t plan it in but uh already had my uh first water crossing of the day. So, uh quite pleased to have included this. I just let Straa root me and said take me on gravel and it’s brought me here. I’m sure I’ve been down this path before. Feels familiar but really nice. It’s got me off the roads which are a bit busy at this time of morning. So I’ve just come through Pterton or in Pterton now. Um got a good view over Notting Nottingshire here. I think that’s Sutton Scarsdale Hall over there in the distance. Quite high up here. There’s a road just back there. So it’s dangerous hill if you’re going down it. Really steep. Don’t think I’ve ever cycled that way before. Um it’s quite pleasant up here. Very quiet. Now I’m away from the sort of Mansfield Sutton area. Got out of the busy part of North Knots. Coming across Nottinghamshire. Like I said earlier was really busy. So cut that bit out. Looks like we’re now on our way up towards Bolover. Picking up the Stockley trail to be one of the many railways that cross this area which used to serve the collaries. So they’ve been converted cycle trail. So, uh, we’ll press on. A distinct herbal aroma on the air here. Last time I came up here from over there, had to take a diversion where you can see the metal railing fence and over the canal down there. And they’ve now got this lovely new bridge in. The only disappointment is looks like that part of the canal’s now been filled in. [Music] So that’s the end of the I’d say fabulous Ro the valley trail and stockly trail is beautiful miles and miles of just old railway line I’m now near biteon and sod on the outs of Sheffield so about another 20 25 minutes we should be right in the middle of Sheffield even it’s quite quick ride from here not the best back on the roads again but it’s a necessary evil stuck in traffic again now so when I planned this ride. I thought I’ve got to get across Sheffield and I wasn’t looking forward to it, but there’s quite a lot of this country park. So, I think it used to be some sort of collery or industrial area. It’s been reclaimed and just miles and miles of grally tracks which are really nice. They’ll get you across into Sheffield into the middle of Sheffield quite quickly. So fresh on Just thought I’d stop and capture a bit of this. Looks like it’s just rained here or starting. It’s just dripping off the trees, I think. I think this is Bowen Woods on the outside of Sheffield. But there’s quite a lot of this in this ride. So, I’ve come out of sort of the open area now. This wooded area went on it for quite a while. There’s quite a lot of this wooded area just to get you and it gets you right over towards Meadow Hall. You head into an area called Darnold in a bit that’s not not too great. Um and then down to Meadow Hall. But it’s just to get across Sheffield. Really nice city to cycle through. They really thought it out. Lots of nice cycleways and I think old industrial areas have now been turned into woodland. But really quite a nice area to go through. Just another quick look at that wood. Suddenly out of the woods and that nice woodland trail and you’re on that the main road in and out of Sheffield. Probably the the worst bit of this ride going across Sheffield. It’s that that noisy. Horrible. That’s what I’ve been trying to avoid all. Yep. It’s an absolute dossole here. I hate this bit. Just nearly been wiped out again by another driver just flat out through the narrow bit, but he knows I wasn’t happy with his performance through there. So, let’s see if he comes back. He didn’t look too happy as I uh remmonstrated with him as he nearly took me out. But it’s what you get for riding in the city. It’s never great. I just can’t wait to get through this bit. It’s horrible. I like coming through Sheffield and seeing things like this. Sheffield forge masters, the old industrial areas. know what they make here if it’s still active. A very industrial old town city even. Yeah. Sheffield Forge Masters. Apart from that bit through the builtup housing estate where it was just insane where everyone’s racing around in the cars. Um it’s quite nice riding across Sheffield. Cycle paths are nice, well looked after and you get you past all the old industrial areas. So some nice bits here that I’m just about to drop into. Just skirting around the edge of Meadow Hall now. Wouldn’t believe it really. It’s just so easy to get across Sheffield. Roads are nice or cycle paths I should say are really good. Just get you right across the city. So we’re just the other side of Sheffield now making them up to Wentworth and um back on some old railway line. Some really beautiful old buildings either side of it, but I wouldn’t be able to capture cuz they’re hidden by the trees. I can just make them out, but so I’ve cleared Sheffield now on the way to Wentworth. Back off road again. Just some quiet country lanes. Nothing special, but they weren’t too bad. Bit of climbing. It’s into lumpy bumpy territory now until we get back onto the uh Elskar Branch Canal shop. Supposed to be good here and have a look in a dinosaur on the road. Don’t know why. Oh, there shop. It’s lived up to reputation. Nice pie selection. Look at that. So, the dinosaur was telling you to stop at Wentworth Village Shop. One of the ladies in there dressed up. That was a lovely village shop. £850. Bought me a turkey salad cob or roll as some of you might like to call it or breadcake, but I’m from the East Midland so it’s cobb. Nottingham. Pork pie. Stilton P by cup of tea and a can of Coke. Not bad for a picnic. Um I always have a can of Coke when I’m on my ride. There’s a bit of a boost, a sugar rush. That should do me for quite a few miles now. And it is dinner time and I’ve done about a third of the ride. So should be a bit less stop start. Now I’m through Sheffield and out some of the bridal ways. The trails open up a bit. And once I get on to the um Air and Cal navigation, my speed should pick up a bit. So I should cover a good 20 odd miles in quite a quite a good good speed then especially up the side of the leads canal. So we’ll press on once we had something to eat. [Music] Elska Iron Works must come here one day and have a visit. Engine sheds are there. Lovely old station. And there’s some I don’t quite know what that is. The Earl’s great engine. Then from here I jump on the tow path at the side of the canal leads to Elskartly Barnsley and Elskar branch canal I think it’s called. And then that’s uh that runs for miles. So that’s really nice. Beyond that in a few minutes. So that was the Earl’s engine which was made in 1787 or the shaft was sunk for it. Now we jump onto the lead snails car branch canal which is lovely along here. So, we’re now on the Elskar Branch Canal. I’ve just stopped. Um, let’s push off again actually while we’re filming. And it’s going on for miles. It’s really nice. I think there’s a big retail park just up to the right if I wanted to any water, but I’m good for water. So, we’re now on the Elskar Branch Canal. I think there’s a retail park just off up to my right, past mostly builtup area, so it should start quieting down. There’s a few people walking back there. Just went past that heritage center. But I’ve now got I’ve now got something like 10 15 miles of this. We swap sides. It goes into some quite dense forest. Just beautiful toe path trails for miles. So we’ll press on and get towards leads. When we get up towards a place called Meth Junction, I think we should be ready to pick some water up. Although there is a secret shop along the air and car navigation might pop into if I need some. And now back on the trans penine trail. So you can see we’re here by the marker. So I’m heading to the right up to uh Barnsley and Wakefield. Didn’t realize it was that far to go to Wakefield. I’m about what am I now? I’m just running at 64k into the ride. So that’s what 40 miles with another 60 to go just after 12:00. So hopefully I’ll get there by I don’t know half 5 6:00. I’ll have another cafe stop somewhere, get a cup of tea, coffee, and a bit of something to eat because I’ll be flagging by then. But I’ve got plenty of energy gels and bits on board. So uh should be okay for fuel. It’s just water. It’s looks a bit gray and overcast, but it is it is surprisingly warm. There’s a couple of cyclists bombing by me. Let’s have a It’s quiet on here really. A few walkers, but not many people at all. I really like these trails. So, we’ll uh carry on. There are some trails down there. Keep springing into view just through the trees. Got a zigzag up and down the bank here on the right of me. If I wasn’t trying to press on, I’d go down there and have a a ride up and down and just make it a bit more interesting. But I want to press on and also I can’t be asked really. I’m not on a mountain bike and I’ve gone out of that sort of stuff now. I just want to ride my bike and enjoy it on some nice trails. It’s the foot station remote control planes coming for a landing. Oh, there’s some complaints off the passengers over that one. spinning around a bit on the floor. He probably works for Ryan Air doing landings like that. So, this was part of the ride that last time I did it, um, strangely enough for a guy. Um, I felt quite vulnerable along here. Um, there’s just nobody. I’ve just seen a lovely young lady that was laughing at me cuz the corners were steep and I nearly stuffed it into the fence. But last time I came along here, there’s nobody. Um, you can see why [Music] you got a lot of this now. And you don’t cross any roads for a while. It’s a few houses high up on the bank, but it’s miles and miles of this. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Applause] [Music] back on the trans north. Just cut over a rather unpleasant junction. Just came through a village called Walton. Stopped at a little cafe called Whisk. Lovely ladies in there serving and uh really nice tea. Very refreshing actually. and really nice cake. I’ve got my bottles topped up as well. Um, that was good. So, I should be good to go for the next 20 25 miles. It’s absolutely red hot today. One of those days where it doesn’t warm, but it’s really going through a lot of water. So, I’ve probably gone through 50 miles and done four bottles. My legs are very tired. Not done a lot this week. Probably should have done a bit more exercise, but back on the Transpanine Trail. Five or six miles and we’re on the air and Cal navigation. It’s tarmac up the side. That’s a bit easy, but still nice. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. place called Heath. Quite pretty. This is one of those things you forget about. Forgot. I don’t mind them making prison for cyclists. [Music] So on the bridge over the river Calder, I think it is or river air. I don’t know what it is. I know we’re heading up towards the air and cal navigation. So, it’s one of the two. [Music] Was a laser. I’d get me a map out and tell you. And I feel like I should do it. Let’s have a quick look. I’m intrigued. I need to know myself. Right. What are we on? Bridge. Perfect. Breathing heavy. River. Cow. We’re going over then we drop onto the air and encounter navigation canal which is nice. Massive secret shop. I just found out the lady in there. She was lovely. When I went in there last year it was red hot. She refused to sell me water. She said stand here. And she ran off and filled the bottles up in in her house and she wasn’t even open. I just as I trying to find the shop cuz it’s secret shop. It was hidden away. And I just asked somebody and she was just happened to be the owner. She went, “Oh, I’m not open today. Got staff problems. What do you want?” I go and get mess up. So, forgot what I wanted. Some chocolate, a couple of drinks, peanuts, cuz I wanted something savory. And then she undercharged me. She wouldn’t take any more money. So, if she’s open, I’ll go and buy something for her cuz I feel I owe it to her cuz she was that lovely before. And um I like the novelty of it being called the secret shop. and it’s just hidden in a hedge and you have to go through a little gap. I’ll see if that’s safe. And if not, we’ll find it anyway. And I’ll show you where it is if you wanted to drop in if you’re ever riding this part of the world. [Music] We brought the babies over. [Music] around here is a secret shop and I’ve just gone past it. [Music] [Music] Secret shop Stanley Ferry. Yeah, closed, but if it was open, I’d go in. Sounds like a train going over here. Heat. Heat. [Music] Apologies. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Sorry. I’m now approaching Leaves, bottom end of Leaves. Just come over the Cal Navigation around that way. I’m making my way up now the side of the river. There’s some county lines there. Just gone by on ebikes. Unrestricted ebikes. I’m told that’s how they move the drugs down here. All the hoods up. Bellaclavadon. Yeah, reckon that’s what they were doing. Just keep a good speed up when I get distance from them cuz I think they look like a bit of trouble. So we are probably couple of miles from we start to hit the outskirts of Leeds. All the bridges that are carrying the roads into leads. See planes flying over that taking off or landing at the airport. We’re not far off it. A place to live, is it? Right on the waterfront. [Music] Hopefully some big vioaduct came across here. We’re right really close to Lead City Center now. It’s quite quiet at this part of the uh the ride, but probably like 10 minutes out now of the city center. Suddenly gets very busy very quickly. Race for the fish there to go up. This feels good. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] [Music] right in the middle of leaves areas. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Not parking under all these arches. is back onto the canal. Excellent. Hopefully that’s Lead City Center done and we’re on the way out now towards Saltier Shipley and Bradford. Bradford’s not particularly great, but when you buy the canal, it doesn’t matter. We got to go. A bag of packs away we waiting for. There’s no point in the name. Escape this time with me. Escal [Music] definitely have to leave now. Now it gets a lot brighter. Still quite busy though. People walking on it. SC. Hey [Music] The skin is with me. to me. This game is down with me. Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] [Music] So, I’m going to put it on This bit of footage went to the tiny tea room in Broadley which was lovely ice cream and a drink and a nice coffee. So this is really low on fluids. Been really warm today. So gone for about six bottles so far. I got two left on the bike for the last 25 miles which will do. And I’ll probably drop into Canal House and Skipton or an arrow boat just have a sweet spot of refreshment before I crash on some point my daughter’s house. I’m just coming up on Salt and Bingley now. I think I’m going to get a bit further up. I’m going to put 10 miles down on the road just to get some distance in and just increase the pace. So, I can get there by about half 6, which was I thought I get there by 7, but I think if I jump on the road for a little while, I can just it’ll give me time for a swift one in Skipton just to refresh myself and then I can push on down the canal for the last two two or three kilometers to my daughters. But yeah, I’ll do the road just to get the mileage in. But it’s so pretty along here. Really quiet. Not many people at all. There’s a few people I’ve passed coming out here who then on the way back again cuz they’ve overtaken me while I had a tea stop. Yeah. Lovely. The last few miles out of Leeds after Leeds sort of Bingley way, I didn’t film because I jumped on the road just so I could make some uh miles up cuz we were it’s getting late. I’ve had a long day and you know we’re riding on GR so it’s not that as fast as you want it to be. So jumped on the road to do 15 20 miles. I do about 15 miles. So put some pace down just to do that in about just 45 50 minutes. So I’m not far off Skipton now. About about 7 and a half kilometers outside. So should be there soon. Final run into Skipton now. Battery’s about dead on my camera, so I might not make it, but let’s see if we can. Lots of boats more along the canal now. Here we are pulling into skip. So I think I might just well not think I am going to definitely just it for a swift pint just so I can do a final video give you the stats of the ride. We’re just hovering about.3 of a kilometer under 160. So that’s just that’s chuff off 100 100 miles in uh British money. So, um, yeah, it’s been a good long day. Just made a couple laugh on the tow path cuz they jumped out the way. I said, “Thanks for not slowing me down cuz I can see the pub now.” So, uh, made him smile. Yeah, te’s nearly made. So, I’m only going to have a swift one and then I’ll get there. But, uh, yeah, his skipped in. Right, I’m here in Skipton. Made it 106.3 km. I’ve got about kilometer left to go. So be over 100 miles. 7 hours 42 so far. Yeah, I’ve got one and a half 1.45 km left to go and speed of 20.8. So a ride time of 7 hours 42 minutes. So I’m happy with that. Nice sun. Um another 5 minutes up to my daughter’s tea is just about ready. So I’ll drop this point down quickly and get back and have my tea made for me. So uh hope you’ve enjoyed that trip and uh hope it’s not too long the video that I’ve made, but I’ll try and put lots of the tracks on. Been a really good day out. Really enjoyed it. And I uh really hope you enjoy watching and subscribe and like the video, please. Thank you very much.
