All earnings from this endeavour go to Cancer Research UK

Stage 3 : Ogbourne St George to Pangbourne : a Thru Hiker’s first multi day cycle experience

King Alfred’s Way is a 360 km predominantly off-road cycling route that officially starts at the historic Westgate, at one end of the High Street in Winchester, and finishes at the other end, under the statue of King Alfred. Our Stage 3 was a 62km route from Ogbourne St George to Pangbourne . The weather was again very hot, made more challenging by being on the Ridgeway (no water, exposed) for most of the day. We did visit my Day2 wild camping spot from 2021, before dropping into the gap in Goring and making our way to our accommodation in Pangbourne and a fantastic Turkish meal

Overnight = The George, Pangbourne
w3w = sunshine.flagpole.waltzes
Daily km = 62
Cumulative km : 197

[Music] Smash that like button. Woo! Like and subscribe. Early morning packing. So, getting ready for the new day. This is where our bikes were stored last night. So nice little place. Stayed in this guest house called the well. Actually has a small well inside. But 1658 [Music] Yeah, we just found a slightly off-road alternative. Doesn’t take away anything from the distance or really add anything, but it just means we can cycle through this shaded bit for a few miles rather than along a road. There were a few by road bits on the Ridge Trail. Obviously, we’re on one of them. Memories of walking the Ridgeway National Trail. I remember coming over this motorway. You’re wondering what we’re doing. Yeah, we don’t know either. God, it’s another warm day and we’re by the Ridgeway Trail. On the Ridgeway Trail. So, it’s day three. Bit shorter today. Yesterday was a very hot day. We had a very long ride. took a very long time. But today, slightly shorter. We’re following the ridgeway all the way down to Goring, which is at the temps, and then we’re cutting cutting south a little bit. But let’s see where the day takes us. [Applause] Still on the right route, but this is a beautiful little valley. Wood carvings. Somebody’s home. Say people, yeah. So, this is the ridgeway. We’re on top of the ridge. It’s fairly flat up here and just following this path. It’s chalk, so that’s why it’s the color it is. Here is way smithy long barrerow. I visited this Cuz we’re on the road four years ago, a burial mound. So, met a couple who are wild camping their way. So, they stayed here the night. That was really good going through there. That took me back to when I walked the ridgeway. It’s an incredible burial mound just off the just off the path. No more than 50 yards. Um yeah, so we get back on again. Coming up to another hill fort, but this one has the trick point again. Another sort of marker point on the Ridgeway Trail. Another beautiful hill fort with the outer rim and the inner rim. And then up there. Yeah. Lamborghorn. That’s where all the horses are. Oh, no. That’s just people sitting up. Hi. The top the ridgeway completely silent. I remember this farm track on the uh ridgeway. It was so white and the reflected sun made it so hot to walk on. You want a quiet lunch? Wow. We’re on the ridgeway and I found exactly where I pitched day two cuz I looked at this field and I pitched my tent about here. Thank you to the brilliant people at Ghouling and Streetly Golf Club. I went in there, they gave me water, the barman put ice in my water. Thank you. Here we are. Gorgeous goring the temps where the ridgeway comes down to the temps. Something’s come down. Crab apple tree. Excuse me. Thank you. Yeah. Cheers. We have the Tempame’s River off to our right. Just a calm moment by the river temps. This is very steep. Wow. [Music] Well, tolls. I suppose we just go. Do we? Do we just go through the barrier? Wow. Are we in the George? head. Yeah, we’re at the end of the corridor. Smash that like button. Woo! Like and subscribe.
