Freshly 21 and never learned how to ride a bike as a kid so I’m trying to make up for it here.

My summer job has a lil bike shop attached where they refurbish old donated bikes and sell them for cheap so that people all around the community can have a good mode of transport. Decided to buy this Schwinn Perla since it looked neat and was a good size for me (M-6ft1in).

Really any tips would be helpful for getting started, where I’m at there’s a LOT of hills so I’m trying to get acclimated to going up and down since that’s what my usual commute to my college campus looks like. Really just going up the hills is the part I’m still struggling with since getting first acclimated to balance and all that jazz so really any advice would help me out!

Have you figured out the gears yet? Getting into the right gear before you get onto the hill can help. Shifting to a bigger cog at the rear makes it easier to pedal, shifting to a smaller cog at the front makes it easy (if you have more than one at the front).

You may also find hills especially hard if your saddle isn’t in the right position for you. It looks like it could be quite low, which people often do when they’re learning so you can easily put your foot on the floor. But your legs are a lot more efficient at turning the pedals with the saddle a bit higher, when you’re not just mashing down on the pedals with your thighs.
