A specific bolt, but from my experience a brake rotor bolt fits in there really nicely.

I just lost one myself. The correct size for my shimano shifter was m5-10mm, although I could have potentially used an 8mm instead.
If you look up the parts diagram to your shifter, it should tell you for sure.
