Here we are in Ulrichen at the
foot of the Nufenen Pass. Probably one of the hardest
climbs here at the Alpenbrevet. The only difference here is,
certain participants already
have one or two passes in their legs and others
are just starting here in Ulrichen. On a 13 km long road
you climb 1100 metres in altitude, before
you reach 2478 metres above sea level.
At the top you can enjoy the
view over to Valais or the Ticino. This climb averages 8.6% A climb not for the faint hearted.
The approach from Ulrichen is very varied and offers an
impressive flora and fauna. We are on a flat section here. We have overcome the first
steep ramps. Now we can ease off a little enjoy the nature and afterwards we take the last serpentines up
towards the top of the pass. There are still a few kilometres
to go. and a few metres of altitude
to cover, until we reach the top of the
Alpenbrevet, on the Nufenen Pass. On both
sides of the pass there often
blows a strong wind, which also
empowers large wind turbines near the
top of the pass. This makes the pass a bit
tougher. In contrast to the medieval pass crossing at the
Grimsel, the pass road built over the Nufenen was not opened
until 1964. That’s why there are significantly higher average
gradient percentages. That was a decent piece of work. The last switchbacks were really
tough, really steep. I have just passed the blue sign of the pass 2478 metres above sea level The top of the Alpenbrevet.
All tours pass through this
point. An extremely beautiful pass and I look forward
to the descent towards Ticino.
