I just picked up a used Giant Avail, frame says composite so I’m assuming it’s carbon. Inspected it in a rush and only just noticed this when I got back. It’ll just be for commuting, not long rides.
I’d get it inspected. Whatever was rubbing has gone through the paint and into the carbon fibre. Zooming in, it *looks* like loose strands of carbon are visible. That’s a concern.

Don’t let it get worse but probably not a huge deal. Just slap a frame protector sticker on it. They come with a lot of new bikes. A bike shop will probably have a spare laying around for you.

Yep, it looks like there’s been material loss. In some places, not an issue. On the headtube, yes it needs looking at. Someone like Luescher Teknik can give you a fairly decent appraisal of how much the frame has been compromised.
Put it this way….I wouldn’t ride it, but I live in the hills and am 96kg
Buy some protection stickers and get some of these things. Bike cables can destroy frames including aluminium because the outer is made from hardened high tensile steel. Aluminium and CF is no match for it.

Either get a frame repair specialist (for carbon!) to look at it or get a new frame. Not safe to ride!
