Hello there. Welcome to Walks with Chris. And the idea is an extended episode for you uh on this April evening. Uh I’ve just dropped my son off at football training. And I thought, you know what? Rather than sit in the car like a lot of people do, I thought, let’s get for a walk. So, we’re heading from Spen Valley High School. so far. Follow me from Spen Valley High School and we’re going to try and find the public footpath. Now, a few weeks ago, I was going to do this walk and uh and then I didn’t end up taking out Eric to football and I didn’t get a chance to do it. So, I’ve got to try and remember the way that I planned uh to walk. Uh I I should be okay, but part of it is going to cover the Spen Valley Greenway or certainly a bit of it anyway. Uh which I’m be looking forward to see. Uh not been on it for quite a while. So lovely April evening about 6:30 in the evening and I think from memory the public footpath is just behind this brick wall. Let’s see if I’m right. [Music] And sure enough, public footpath sign, Halifax Road. This is the path that we’re going to go on. Now, I’ve driven past the road where this end uh where this comes out, but I’m not sure if it’s overgrown or in between. Always good to walk on a new path, though. So, it looks like there’s another another path there. We’re going to stick to um the path for Halifax Road, which I think must be straight on. It’s in the direction of the road. So, we’re going to keep going this way. I will put uh a map on the screen though to show you where I’m up to during this walk so you can kind of follow where I’m going. Uh but the idea is uh I’ll try and keep it in real time as best as I can. Um, so you can see we do the walk and wherever you are, there’s so many public footpaths, probably so many that you haven’t even been on. So, you know what? Have a look online. Uh, you will find them. And just to show you what the path looks like from where we’ve come. My instinct says that’s blocked off and we’re going this way. I think we’re going in the right direction. again. Could be totally wrong here, but let’s let’s follow this path. We’re certainly in the direction of the road, which you can probably see the houses at the top. So, hope you’re following the the route so far. So from Spen Valley High School where we started off a right turn into the public footpath and then it’s just been literally a straight line. It looks like maybe a stream down there ahead. I’m sure it’ll be signposted. All part of the adventure. Well, we certainly can’t go that way. Definitely, it is not that way. So, I’m guessing it must be this way across the I mean there is a footpath close sign that’s uh that’s closed off. Is it open? Is it open? First question of the day. This looks like a style. This looks like a style. And this to me looks like the path. We’ll follow the the footprints if you like. And this looks like a warm grass. I think we’re on the foot path still along the edge of the water. I certainly believe we’re on the foot path. It’s a lovely path. Anyway, we’ll see where we end up. We’re going through another style. So, We’ll keep going. Now you see, I don’t think it’s that way. I think we’re going across here. So, this seems to be the direction of the road. So, I’m going to take this path up here. The road looks like it’s not far away. I think we’re on the right path. Looks like there’s a an aotment to the side. [Music] See, we’ve nearly reached the houses. They look so far away when we started, but we are going in the right direction. [Music] It’s looking though. [Music] Cheers fishery. Oh, p. Look at that. The shears in. Tempting as it is, we’re not going. We are heading to the spen valley greenway. Let’s go. So, if you’re looking and following this, we’re going down Primrose Lane. It’s such a lovely night to be able to do this. In the first part of the walk, I was a bit worried near the stream, thinking I’m going the right way. So, we’ve come down Primrose Lane. And it looks like we’re set for some rewarding views down here as well. So, I think we’re going straight down the hill. Let’s see how we get on. [Music] So public bridal way there. If you see that sign, you’re going in the right direction. Tell you what though, good views, amazing views. I expect to see more people on the um the greenway when we get to it. More people using the greenway. We’ll see. So that’s where we’ve come from from Primrose Lane. We’re going to keep going. And of course the greenway is quite big actually. We’ll try and get a map to show you as we uh film this just to show you where we get on and where you can walk from into. But I’m pretty sure down here there is an access point on to the greenway. So, if you’re following the signs, there you go. Total distance 1 mile. Total time 18 minutes and 51 seconds. There you go. That was stage pace 18 minutes 50 seconds per mile. There you go. That was uh my map my walk in real time telling us we’ve reached the one mile point which is handy to know. So let’s see if we can get a view before we carry on. There we go. That’s the view down there. Looking great. Let’s keep going because this is the direction we want to walk back towards Hetman. So this is the spend valley greenway now. ever since the world. Do you know what? The only thing I’m trying to remember now from the map I did a few weeks ago is where to get off um the greenway to walk back to Spen Valley. I’m sure it’ll come to me, but um let’s keep going. As you can see, lots of different entry points on the route, easily accessible, and uh just a calm and lovely evening. There’s a cat out enjoying the the green way as well. [Music] So, as I say at the minute, I’m going towards Hetman Y cuz that’s the direction we’re walking in. I’ll just turn around to give you kind of idea. Now, in a minute in the distance, it looks like we’re about to go through a tunnel. So, I’m guessing we’re going under uh the main road. We will assess as we get nearer. So, um you’ll see. I think it’s I think it’s like a figure of eight that we’re going to be walking tonight. As for time, I think I’m doing okay. Um I reckon we must be close to a mile and a half now, I think. Um I’ll put the clock on the screen actually whilst I do this. Um I’m just curious. As I say, my my son Eric is playing football for an hour. So I think we’ve been going about 23 minutes um at this stage. Uh, so we’re okay. We’ll get there. Can see a squirrel. Can you see it? I can see it. I hope you caught that. There you go. First interesting sign. Farmers sewing. Young lambs grazing. Cattle loing. Low mist hazing. Runners jogging. Doggy sniffing. Lovers snogging. [Music] It really is an amazing tunnel though. Um it’s it’s brilliant. It’s it’s actually quite calming under here. Um but I absolutely love it. Really it’s a great tunnel to walk through. So, we’ve reached the end of the tunnel there. We’ll keep going. So, we’re now um I’ll show you where where I think we are on the map. Uh still walking towards Hman White. Um and at the minute, I think we carry on. He says, “Give you another view of the tunnel though, which is looking ace. So there you go. To give you some perspective, National Cycle Network sign. So I think that says 1 and a4 miles to Clack Eaton I think and a mile to Hetman. So that is where we are on the greenway. There’s a cafe. I have been I think I’ve definitely been to that cafe before along the greenway. But there it is, a sunflower pot. [Music] So, we’re still going towards uh Hetman at the minute. Um, let’s keep going. Let’s see what view we get. Let’s see what view we get from down here. Might not get much of a view. We’ll we’ll see when we get a bit further nearer. We’ll keep going. So down here there’s two paths. We’ll stick to the main one. Hope you’re enjoying this longer episode of Walks with Chris. Um, let me know in the comments. Uh, please do get in touch. Maybe you want more of these extended walks. Um, do let me know. And it looks like there’s little offshoots as well. For example, on this stone here, it says bird cage walk. And looks like there’s a um a foot path down there. And over on this side, look at this. I’m going to just detour just just to show you. Think we need to go through this, don’t we? I love tunnels like that. Had to show you. We keep going. Now, if I’ve got a sense of direction, I think we’re going to be turning off the greenway soon. Um, we’re only a mile from Hecman and we certainly don’t want to go as far as uh Hecman Wike. [Music] So, we have another sign here. Dreamers drifting, grandma’s nuttering, granddad’s strolling, babies wriggling, pink cheeks glowing, children giggling, tired feet slowing. Carry on. Now, I’m not sure which way to go here because I could certainly carry on on the um the greenway. This looks like a main road. I’m conscious of time, so I’m going to go a way I didn’t plan to go. This could go wrong, couldn’t it? But we’re going to leave the greenway here. This looks like a main road. Let’s see where it brings us out. See, I do know where I am now. Uh, so this is near the Golden Fish. I think Spen Valley High School is about 10 minutes walk that way. You’ve got Heman White kind of in the direction down there. Uh you can get to Burst that way. Um have I got enough time to carry on and do a bit longer? That’s the question. I don’t think I have. So I’m going to play it safe and I’m going to Oh, now you see if only TVs could smell that. smells absolutely delicious. I think on the original plan, you can cut down the side streets here, one of these, such as Hinley Road, and you can come out of the uh greenway a little bit further down, but I’m not sure if I’ve been walking fast enough to do that. And we are on the uphill bit now. Um, as I say, it’s one of those I reckon it could have easily been five 5 to 10 minutes that way. Certainly another 5 to 10 minutes back to the main road. It’s it’s touch and go, I think, whether I would have done that. Um, but I love that part of the walk. I love the the greenway. It was absolutely lovely. I’ll have to walk more of that. Heat. Heat. We’ll wait for a signal. There we go. We waited for a signal. So, we cross over. Heat. Heat. And to complete the loop, whether I would have done the longer segment on the the greenway or not. Total distance 2 miles. Total time 37 minutes and 41 seconds. Split pace 50 seconds per mile. That was my my walk saying I’ve done two miles. Headlands Hole. There you go. I love that stone. I was just saying if I’d have done the longer bit on the greenway, it would have still meant this kind of bit at the end where I was walking in the main road. kind of unavoidable to do the loop really, but we’re at the 2- mile mark, which is I think is pretty good. Heat. Heat. And just in front I can see the sign for Spen Valley High School which means we have done our circuit. We’ve made it 30. Just short of 39 minutes. Definitely better than sitting in the car. [Music] So, there you go. We are back where we started. Um, I hope you all enjoyed that. Um, I did I did bit good bit of exercise there on this April evening. Thank you for watching and uh let me know if you want to do another walk with Chris, an extended one soon as well. I would love to do another one. So again, let me know in the comments if you enjoyed the extended one. Uh that’s it for me. Like and subscribe and bye for now. You know what? Back at the car almost 10 minutes later, it’s raining. I did the right thing, didn’t I? Cutting that walk short. It could have been another 20 minutes. I could have been drenched. See you later.
