So I just got this used bike and was shifting bad so my buddy tried to help and he said I have an 11s rear derailleur which is why it can’t properly be indexed. When shifting down sometimes it gets stuck on that gear.
Options are to get an older shimano RD-5701 105 10s but they seem to be out of stock. Seems like tiagra replaced this? Should I just buy that?

TLDR; What rear derailleur should I get and will it fix my shifting issues.

Your buddy is wrong. That is a 9 speed mountain derailleur, and operates with the same cable pull as a 10 speed road derailleur, as is commonly used on road bikes to get more gears.

That doesn’t mean that the derailleur isn’t your problem, but it’s not because it’s 11 speed. It could be worn out (these things have a useful life), the hanger could be bent, etc.

As far as few derailleurs go, any older 9 or 10 speed road, or 9 speed mountain derailleur will work just fine. Where it gets complicated is when Shimano introduced 10-speed mountain (DynaSys) and then when they updated all their Tiagra-level components to the “new” cable pull.

  2. Yes, the Tiagra is the one you need. While you are at it, I’d recommend changing the inner and outer shifter cables also.

  3. Shimano 105 or Ultegra will work. It can be a model that was originally for a 10 or 11 speed.
