The new episode of Turdtowns is dropping in the bog, this week we visited East Anglia and the County of Suffolk. A really nice County without many bad places so I’ve limited it just 5 towns. As usual number 1 was a clear and easy winner/loser depending on how you look at it.
Will it be Ipswich? Will it be Bury? Stick around and find out!
hello and welcome back to Turd Towns the channel that brings you the lesserknown places in the UK for good but usually for bad reasons and today it’s going to be some more of those bad reasons although maybe not that bad because we’re only in the county of Suffukk suffukk is not a place for a lot of crime interestingly it’s on a par with places like Heraffordshire yet more than three times as many people live here with 767,000 people calling it a home it’s also just a bit of a strange old place really it doesn’t really fit into the northern or the Midlands or the southern stereotypes it’s also very flat here there is not a single motorway and it takes forever to drive anywhere and if you ask somebody from Suffukk they’d most likely tell you they like it this way so it’s another very nice county so as usual a quick disclaimer i’m not claiming these places are as bad as a Midland’s hell hole or a London council estate i’m saying they are just bad for this county got it good [Music] number five Ipsswitch ipsswitch is the most famous place on today’s list with a population of 139,000 based on everything that I’ve read online about Ipsswitch it’s often called the worst place to live in the UK so I was expecting an absolute bomb of a town i can only assume people don’t travel the UK much as I’ve seen far worse just not really in Suffuk it’s mostly regarded as being a rougher version of Norwich the standards are high here so whilst Ipsswitch might be a tur town for Suffuk it most likely wouldn’t be elsewhere i do listen to local knowledge and enough people say it’s not a nice place to live then there must be some substance to that but I was pleasantly surprised with the choice of shops it was actually much better than some cities like Bristol suffukk isn’t exactly the most diverse county in the world but you wouldn’t know that from Ipsswitch where 82% of people were born here and the rest were not it does house the poorest parts of the county so if Suffuk does have no go areas I guess they’d be here much what you would expect from the largest town in a county the new development around the marina looks like a nice place to spend time this was an area which was hit especially hard by the bombing raids in World War II i do feel like I’m done a bit too much defending of Ipsswitch though it’s apparently one of the oldest towns in England but it didn’t really feel that way i’m just going to have to take their word for that from my research the reason Ipsswitch has such a bad reputation is that it had a big falloff after 2008 will it survive 2025 who knows it just gets compared too often to Norwich and Berry St edmunds two places faring better every year Ipsswitch bids to become a city and every year it fails further growing the bragging rights for Norwich these two places do not like each other much nobody really gets out and about here so they can focus on their silly rivalry of a city an hour and a half away the town is filled with lots of small-minded people with small-minded mentalities shockingly many of them have never even been to London although it’s only an hour away maybe they don’t want to leave because there’s just too much here places to eat things to see and a pretty successful football team base right in the middle of the town i was pleasantly surprised by the crime rate too of 97,000 and the house price of 258,000 whilst it switch may not be performing as well as its glory is you could still do worse than living here number four Leon this small isolated town has a population of 5,900 there’s nothing remarkable about this place and nobody would ever see or visit here if it wasn’t for one thing seizewell the nuclear power station whilst that’s all established and away from the town a new one is currently being built which is all over the news lately and the building of this plant will ensure that existing here in Lyon will be a living nightmare for the next 15 years the roads are already terrible in this county but they’ve decided to make the main road to Lyon even worse it’s dirty the entire way even though it’s just a standard road out in the country this meant that driving here took forever it doesn’t get any better once you make it into the town with loud work going on all over the place and you’ve come a long way for nothing some roads are closed hundreds of acres of fields are being destroyed and it’s just not pleasurable being here in terms of local opinion they were mixed on how they felt about the new sizewell some are against it due to the spiraling cost the time it will take to build it and they may also be against nuclear power too but others are happy because it’s going to bring lots of new people to the town and the town will hopefully grow in importance well it’s certainly not important now it felt like one of the most nothing places I’ve ever visited at least this nuclear town has a takeaway where they serve locals vision chips really the town is just a co-op and a crossroads of mostly derelik shops oh by the way no railway station here but it still seems to be usable as it’s being utilized to help with the building of size good luck with the buses too it takes an hour and a half to make it to Ipsswitch if you want to do something major shopping there is a secondary school in the town but according to Offstead it needs to improve at least houses are cheap here with an average of just 233,000 it’s hard isn’t it residents are used to their quiet boring existence but suddenly this whole town has been taken over and it’s going to be like this for a very long time maybe in 15 years the new size will help raise up this little town but for now it’s just like being trapped in a living hell with constant construction work and road problems it’s hard to see the attraction of living in this nuclear town of Lyon so my advice would be don’t come here and stay reactive and not radioactive number three Brandon brandon is a small town with a population of 9,225 this place is just weird it’s in the extreme northwest of the county so it feels like you’re in Norolk brandon is right next to an RAF base so every 5 minutes a huge plane will fly over shaking the entire town to its foundations actually on that subject I don’t live on a flight path myself but has anyone else noticed the increase in army planes in the sky something is definitely brewing lately the whole place is just a bit sad and depressing i came here and instantly questioned why I’d bothered wasting my time there’s lots of weird displays up in the town and none of them are explained fish head cartoons which I presume is something to do with the RAF base or I may be wrong and statues without labels this means they aren’t really used to the outsiders here and they understand and embrace their own strange quirks i don’t think they realize quite how jarring this is to an outsider the first major issue you will notice here is the pollution the town is centered around a crossroads and there is a neverending stream of cars and lries billowing out pollution like a neverending stream of diarrhea all over Brandon in its favor it has hourly trains to Norwich and Cambridge so it wins bonus points for the escape factor also in this town it’s got a river and a forest right on the doorstep so it’s not all bad and you can have a nice time by leaving the town it seemed to be market day on my visit and this was creating decent footfall in the town the good news kept on rolling with the average house prices only being 224,000 another strange quirk to this place was that one of the main buildings in the center was a privately owned bowling alley really strange location for this one but now it’s shut its doors leaving a great big stain on the town center i didn’t personally think it was that bad here just a bit derelictked and scruffy it was just worse than the high standard Suffuker set for itself and it’s just the sort of place where most people were conceived by two cousins dogging in the Audi car park it’s a strange isolated town which is somehow at the ass end of Suffukk towns despite being in the north number two Haver Hill how can I possibly make this video without including a place like this which is basically an advertisement for Tur Towns i had a horrible sleep last night guys i arrived in Suffuk at about midnight parked up and I just couldn’t get comfy my air bed popped so I was sleeping on a carpet it wasn’t the best night’s sleep so I’m absolutely hanging this morning it’s about 7:00 a.m things feel pretty gloomy here in Havill but things are about to get better here we go guys it’s our first telephone exchange of the trip as usual looking scruffy as all hell but still in use by Open Reach here typical 60s design on this one um loving the added foliage in front of it really adds to the appeal of the telephone exchange i’d rate this one a 4 out of 10 as far as Howill Telephone Exchange goes this is a market town with a population of 26,710 for starters this place stunk really badly i’m not sure where the smell was emanating from but the stench of raw onions mixed with sewage soon breached my nostrils and knocked me to the floor i especially liked how when they pedestrianized Havill they kept the open sewer that was running through the town it really adds to the turdy nature of the place and gives it some extra bog appeal this is a very old and historic town but it doesn’t feel like that because most of it got burnt down that is why this doesn’t feel like many of the other pretty towns in this county it’s just a hodgepodge of buildings in terms of Suffukk it’s a pretty cheap place to live at an average of 278,000 but you’ll be making sacrifices living here as it’s in the middle of nowhere with nothing to see or do and the overriding sense of doom and gloom that time is running out there are signs all over the town protesting a plan to turn waste into renewable energy presumably it would smell even worse here if the plans went ahead they would like their railway station reopened as Haval is one of the largest towns in England without one but Hav was deemed a not northern enough for the government to care and b a waste of money as Havill residents already used the sewers as a mode of transport the third theme continues when you visit Havil’s most famous landmark a giant laser lit toilet roll roundabout which cost 125,000 it’s perfect as it warns unsuspecting travelers what they’re about to enter and it also reminds Havill residents that they need to wipe this is one hill that I wish we didn’t have this is what I’m talking about a little sneak peek into an insider turd town i’ve just come all the way to Sudbury and it’s bloody lovely it’s why you can’t always listen to tips it’s nice here so yeah we’re not including Sudbury it’s too nice we’re not doing it for the sake of it number one Lowto at number one is the seaside town of Lowtoff with a population of 71,327 all right then Lowtoff i could honestly say I’ve never been here before but first impressions it reminds me a bit of Hart Leool or somewhere like that despite being a pretty big place it sure doesn’t feel important or noteworthy the first issue is that it can’t decide if it’s a port an energy powerhouse or a tourist destination the port is right in the middle of the town dominating the landscape but also dominating the area we’ve got one of the largest offshore wind farms I think I’ve ever seen there is also a beach and this did used to be a popular seaside destination there’s also a huge Pontin Holiday Park it is rated terribly and if you ask me they would be better off opening up the nearby zoo and letting the tigers and the other animals finish off the old smelly cronies that are limping around Ponins it would be doing everybody a favor i truly can’t imagine anyone coming here for a holiday it didn’t feel like any sort of destination I’d want to visit i’d rather stay at home than ever come here again this is the kind of town where they’re going to really be feeling the financial pressures of everyday life that’s going on now i’ve heard that job losses have got up as high as they were back in 2008 it’s quite a bleak outlook not to be depressing cuz this series is meant to be sort of tongue and cheek laugh but it’s a fact that when you’re in a town like this this is the sort of place which is really going to be feeling financial pressures because people aren’t going to spend big money to come to places like this and you can tell it used to be sort of really grand here but I mean would you pay big bucks to come here because you know an earth average Airbnb is going to be like 200 quid a night by the sea and the hospitality sector is getting absolutely bummed by these financial issues it’s very concerning for a town like this it just didn’t feel like a place that was catering towards tourists and it made me slip into a depression in terms of shopping the choice wasn’t the worst I’ve ever seen but the main street felt unwelcoming and intimidating if you head up the high street it just keeps on going but don’t bother wasting your time there’s no reason to go up there i will also take a moment to praise the council who are determined to brighten the place up with big flower displays i certainly appreciated this for without this the only flower would be what is mixed in with the low stuff’s residents favorite substance on a Friday night yeah there’s a lot of crime here its crime rate is the worst in Suffukk at 122,000 it’s actually the 34th most dangerous town in the United Kingdom they are considered vulnerable to global extinction but in Suffukk their numbers appear to be growing yeah you got that right look at that the whole roster of the bag up there having a great time you can’t even relieve yourself in low stuff as the toilets have been closed up after Vandals smashed them up presumably they were anchored as low stuff residents are not toilet trained fortunately it’s another cheap place you can live an average of only 234,000 and if you live on the outskirts of this town I’m sure it’s fine just never venture inwards and you will not have to regret your life decisions it’s one place where if the sea levels continue to rise we will not be regretful and that’s the list did we miss anywhere out where should we visit next i’m currently working on another video which is a bit different to my usual turd offering it may be a bit political but I admit something triggered me so make sure you don’t miss that one by hitting like share and subscribe to help Tur Towns thrive

Brandon jumpscare omg
Anyway the bowling alley with the ‘fish head signs’ aren’t about the RAF it’s towards the council. The owner couldn’t get planning permission to add apartments at the top to profit off migrant emergency housing. The planning got denied and the owner has closed and boarded up the joint in protest and has been sulking ever since. This isn’t a rumour btw this is straight from Mr G himself as my mum spoke to him directly and asked about it.
Most people that move there are Americans so everyone that lives there doesn’t care about the planes and it’s just background noise. If you complain on the local forum you just get told to shut up lol
Ispwich is rough says me Norwich loverrrrr
Ipswich is not small minded ,like to see you're town
the guy at 12:44 died 6 days ago.. RIP might've been a homeless bum but he was a good guy.
Lived in Lowestoft my whole life and I love it because of all the memories I’ve had here.
Definitely moving soon though but I love the community here.
I didn’t realise it’s a ‘dangerous’ place to live because I’ve never felt unsafe wherever I walk around here.
I’ve only been jumped once and robbed, but he gave me my bike back the next day and said sorry! Haha
I live in Lowestoft, we get quite a lot of tourists during the summer months, and they got that lights festival now which has a lot of people. I'm a minimum wage grunt that has to enviously walk past tourists enjoying themselves. Also, I can just about use the toilet. I'm getting there.
I live in sudbury and we all know in this area that Ipswich is generally a shithole. It's a place the rest of Suffolk avoids and the fans of the football team are some of the worst in the country as well. Only ones that constantly cause trouble on the local trains, abusing the elderly and children alike
You do do West Sussex next, moved from Crawley to Stowmarket, Suffolk. Everyone in Suffolk thinks Stowmarket & Ipswich is rough hahaha. Compared to Crawley it's a lovely place
brandon used to be better 10-15 year ago, but right now everything is closing down, mr g bowing was a great place to go to, I guessing you was the person who fly his drone in the air which ended up and Brandon Facebook page
that status without label is a flintknapper who job was to mine for flint near grim grave, Brandon was a flintknapper town in the early 1000s exporting flint around the England. I rember when the staus was carve by hand outside the flnitnapper pub 4 years ago
Probably best to find out the proper pronunciation of the towns – Haverhill is pronounced Hayverhill
Im from Amsterdam and have for undisclosed reasons spend a few months in Ipswich, and outside of it being a car invested hellhole and a lot of stores being shut
its… alright, i guess
You should ask the locals how to correctly pronounce the name of the place.
Braintree in the 90s, and Comfort Cafe on the way to Norwich, in the early noughties 😮
no stowmarket?
Very funny! But Saxmundham is worse than Leiston. At least in Leiston there's a proper pub, The Engineers.
Please get your FACTS correct before you post, there is NO open sewer in Haverhill? I think you are very unintelligent.
any town in suffolk is heaven compared to most parts of the country
You should have actually visited the boarded-up site where former Rose and Crown public house, once, used to proudly stand, at the junction of Norwich Road / Bramford Road.
For our Labour Party controlled Ipswich Borough Council actually gave the local Islamic Kurdish community planning consent to redevelop this historic watering hole into a worshiping mosque, back in 2013.
As a consequence of completely unsupervised bodged building work the whole building was soon deemed to be structurally unsafe, and subsequently ended up having to be completely demolished.
The whole completely boarded-up site, that the council was forced to compulsory purchase, have now regrettably just become an incredibly unpleasing eyesore for many years.
The bloke talking sounds like someone off little Britain
Suffolk towns don,t look that turdy to be honest but must admit Brandon is a pretty awful.
