About a month ago my family (wife and 10yo) daughter took 3 days to ride from New Meadows, ID to Weiser, ID via the Weiser River Trail. We had a great time on old (cheap) bikes with way too much stuff. We camped, fished, laughed a ton and had a most memorable time. My wife is from nearby McCall and has lots of ties to the area so it was extra special in addition to being beautiful and full of history.

Day 1: left car at New Meadows with shuttle driver to take to Weiser. Few hwy miles to WRT trailhead where we got comfortable on the rail trail that would be home for a bit. Terrain varied, appreciated 2"+ meats on the wheels. Camped in Council, ID.

Day 2: Council to Midvale, ID. Leaving the mountains for valley/farm country. We laid flowers on graves of deceased family members buried there and rode to Cambridge for lunch. Hot day with little shade. Hit the Community Pool which was something straight out of 1965 before climbing up to Hipcamp spot for the night.

Day 3: Midvale to Weiser, ID. 20+ miles of very remote river canyon terrain followed by 10ish of farmlands. Finished in Weiser in time for National Fiddle Festival and all it's adjacent festivities. Small town style fun and incredible musicians.

I know 3 day trip isn't gonna blow most minds here but if anyone who regularly peeks into this Reddit thread and thinks I don't have time to do all this touring stuff, especially if it's due to having smaller kids–I hope this gives you a little inspiration.

Happy to answer questions about bikes, the trail (awesome btw thanks Friends of Weiser River Trail), or whatever I am happy to answer them.

Sounds like a great time! I assume your daughter rode the tandem as stoker? Did she enjoy that? We have a tandem as well, and I’ve been thinking of doing the same when my boys grow up.

Oh and nice bikes! I love touring with baskets, they’re so practical.

Sweet tandem! MY wife and I always agreed that we would never ride one together. Never thought our marriage would last a tandem tour. But recently she has been more open to the idea and now I’m scared lol. It came up a couple times when we were doing RAGBRAI together.

I’ve had this trail on my radar for a family trip, too, but information is kind of hard to come by. Thank so so much for your detailed itinerary!
