Part 7 of our Sweden series – The Stora Sjöfallet National Park.
We get back on the bikes for a tour through the Stora Sjöfallet National Park in Lapland. We follow the only road in and out which follows the lake and passes through this vast mountain landscape. There used to be mighty waterfall here but that is now nearly dry as dams have been built to provide electricity. The scenery (apart from the power cables) is still impressive though with huge cliffs and plenty smaller waterfalls gushing from everywhere. We take the opportunity to wild camp and stay in a few mountain lodges for coffee along the way.

[Music] bye [Music] [Applause] [Music] so what do you say we go and fill her up oh we’re just here at the la ponia visitor center at five o’clock in the afternoon we turned up here so we just decided to load the bikes up and head off somewhere down the road and do a bit of camping so no idea where we’re staying this evening yet we’ll sort that problem out about now it’s time now to get the works loaded so we can have a little cycle tour here in the store national park here in lapland in sweden okay bikes are rolling here in the store national park first time we’re cycle touring here in blackland see if we can [Applause] managed to survive mosquitoes i’m pretty aggressive at the moment here that’d be the biggest problem i think otherwise two days on our bikes now exploring this uh park there’s one road in and one road out so we’re not too many options but that’s what we have for us what we’re going to do so enjoy scenery now as we explore and cycle through national parking it’s perfect because this evening but the good thing is it’s like here yeah [Music] three bikes next to each other [Applause] [Music] so even though only uh around 40 50 kilometers from uh zurich national park which is to the south of this it looks completely different here and this is the good thing about this one is we can slide straight through the mountains here we couldn’t do that in surrogate nothing we could only park the car and walk [Music] [Music] even on a cloudy evening here this place is spectacular it must be amazing to see the day where the sun is shining and the sky is blue assume we’ll find a place to put the tint on okay tanty’s up we found a place here right next to the uh the dumb there sit on the rocks and uh have some dinner now hopefully the rain so much battling a bit with mosquitoes again that’s the only minus apart from that [Music] a great area to explore [Music] good morning today is national park we’ve just been camping here between two waterfalls we have choice of two the waterfalls there they’ve been dumped this is uh used for hydro power it’s a great view we have on the camping spot here jeremy’s been reading the brochure this morning about the store on national parks you have any to tell up the body yes there is any more linux yeah it’s like a big cat that lives here in the rocky area but it’s a very big cat i hope we are not using that big head today there’s reindeers so we’ll see what we’re seeing today on the road we’re cycling through this national park today going as far as we can on this road until we get to a lake we’ll see if we can come there see if we can survive the mosquitoes yesterday was pretty bad here this morning is okay it’s windy so now from now on we actually like the wind first time cyclists like wind but keep the mosquitoes away so now at the moment we’re free of mosquitoes so we can get off the tent on the road ready to go okay [Music] do [Music] water gushing down from everywhere such an amazing national park here amazing we can cycle straight through [Music] so this next stretch of road there’s a risk of falling rocks let’s see why she’s cycling past this huge mountain we have right here [Music] fantastic mountain here it’s a shame it’s lighted by this electric power cable there that’s the way it’s like when the modern world is so we’re hungry for power that we all need but areas like this have such beauty have to be converted into hydropower [Music] do [Music] and yet another waterfall awards here that we filled our bottles with in the waterfall that before just tastes so fresh and great and clean i wish you could take a lot of it home amazing clean nice tasting water here what a place not sure whether this uh video will do it justice it’s a magnificent place to cycle through the reason i we came here was because of one picture that i have in uh one of the travel guides of sweden that i’ve had for some years just one small picture of two lonely cyclists cycling up here in this remote area so one day i have to go up and have a look see what it looks like definitely worth it [Music] it’s time for our lunch break here on we’re on the way to ritzy i’m at the moment so jerry keeps eating and eating hasn’t stopped yet what’s that that’s bread and two kicks that’s very good you enjoy your lunch more when you’ve been biking you appreciate [Music] nice food here instead of sitting in the car and just turning up in some restaurant it’s not the same this is much better oh have a rest and we’ll be back on the road so the weather changes fast here a few minutes ago we’re sitting having our lunch in the sun now it’s raining or windy so absolutely prepared for all kinds of weather here another short shower sky is blue again so we can dry out heading now for read seven there’s the field star show on here in which lodge where you can stay overnight i’m sure we’ve got a cup of coffee here [Music] okay which is a great uh coffee break there in the mountain hut there met some other people walking on the kong’s leading so it’s a 450 kilometer hike takes about nothing between a month or two months depending on how slowly or quickly you want to take it that was good to speak to some of the other adventurers there on a big trip so we’ve got about another 10 kilometers to do now up the mountain here heading away from the town to see if we can find a place to come so uh luckily it doesn’t go dark so put the rain clothes on once again and we’ll head up the mountain here now we have to make a change of plans we were planning to cycle up this mountain hill to a lake there’s a campsite but it’s uh being blocked off authorized personnel only that’s a bit of a shame it would be nicely to cycle up the mountain there but the good thing is that there’s a very beautiful wingpro here yeah that’s nice so it looks like this uh power station has taken over the whole valley here it’s a bit of a shame now i had to find another place to camp i think you want to know the good news from here for the guy in the car we’re allowed to go through with the bikes this is no problem you’re okay so once you say the road is closed and police and cameras just doesn’t matter no problem you can go on your bikes so this is just a nice place to camp up by the lake so okay shelby’s back on [Music] hopefully we can jump [Music] so that was the end of our day here cycling into the store national park here so uh yeah that’s been an amazing day a nice road there’s only one road in and tomorrow is the same road out again and the road ends just a bit further on in the lake here where we are so uh not really too many options but it’s been an amazing day to cycle here little traffic amazing views all the way and a mixture of weather if i do everything from sun wind no wind rain this evening it’s pretty cold here up on the top of the field here and it’s quite windy at some point but no mosquitoes but have something to eat inside the tent nice and warm there middle and red has been pretty cold jeremy’s okay as always so uh i tucked in bed now trying to get warm in the sleeping bag and uh yeah i’ve got a brilliant view of the lake here so [Music] amazing spot there’s nobody to be seen anywhere around the place completely to ourselves great place okay tomorrow we’re back on the bikes here doing a kind of the reverse of today we’ll see what uh the weather brings now we know the route so should be another good day on the bikes cycling back out of this national park okay see you tomorrow [Music] may 19th of july just been uh in the tent because it’s been raining so we have no breakfast in the tent but uh jeremy has magical connections to the ink gods so we’ve got the rain to stop so that was good jeremy you did a good job you can even can see a bit of blue sky there i’m afraid the rain will stop and five minutes later then the weight stopped we thought we were sitting in blue sky came and then i said one more time that the clouds here there was great cars that they need to move to the mountains and then they just push i just put push the clouds away so now they’re on left and right side of us now so now the tanks even drying out jeremy did a good job yesterday he’s prepared the temp with these stones here to make sure the tint is stable in the storm i was reading island a few years ago so uh today we didn’t actually uh get a storm so a few hours ago it’s quite warm and sunny and it rained and rained and rained i thought we were sitting in the tent all day but managed to jerry managed to sort that out so now we’re getting there boats loaded and we admire the view last time and then we’ll be heading off back down to the ranger station i think and get a cup of coffee there because we couldn’t get the cooker out this morning so okay let’s get back to it ready to [Music] this go on the side of the road this gives you some idea how deep the snow is up here in the winter time vitsun is a pretty big camping site lots of caravans here we don’t see any people at all completely deserted they all seem to have these uh kind of uh shed wooden hood things on the side of them this is used in the winter maybe [Music] right drizzle most of the day here we head out but the good thing is we’ve got a nice tailwind now so keeping us uh moving along quite nicely today [Music] jimmy thanks for entering the london king kong here [Music] i see if we can stop here in the mountain station here it’s warmed up a little bit a little bit cold today we can have lunch here it’ll be nice with a cup of water coffee and sitting in the drive for a bit [Music] well the coin man that runs the mountain lodge is that we can go inside warm up and eat our lunch in here very nice of him today it’s a little bit cold the places i love finding and coming to also used on the kong’s leading train here okay we’re very lucky people today let us stay here oh look at this you’re gonna fire how about lunch here in the droid the perfect place to come the mountain lodge owners just put more water on so i know it’s roaring away behind us be like the luckiest people in the world we can sit here and have lunch he’s even made a cup of coffee for us time to come out in the cold again that has just been pulled away from nice fire that was a great lunch stop the owner of the uh or the ward hood warden him let us go there have a lunch and then warm up by the fire and even made a pot of coffee for us call me better now we are ready just to do the last 20 kilometers back to where we started [Music] that barely runs so what do you say we go and fill her up [Applause] carter’s waiting here for us his family has returned final moments not even wild camping anymore this is hurricane hurricane wild camping right on the lake here we’ve got some of the biggest rocks we can find and keep the guide ropes in position so i think it’s okay [Music] try to wake up every morning be grateful for every chance you’re given okay so that was the end of our short mini adventure here in the store national park in loveland we wanted a few days to spend here we managed to get the bikes out do a be a cycle touring there’s one road in one road out that’s all we could do really as cycle tourists didn’t see anybody else here on bikes only us i think most of the people they’re heading for no caps or don’t uh yeah maybe at the time or want to spend a few days biking extra 200 kilometers in and out here but for us in the car we could come straight in and enjoy this fantastic area what an amazing place absolutely magnificent mountains around us it’s a little bit harsh conditions and even though we’re in the middle of the summer here it’s pretty cold last night in the tents and windy and stormy a little better mixture of sun rain wind so overall great trip these are mountain stations that we have found on the way there they’re great just to come in and get warm the people here actually extremely friendly they’re sunny people these are the uh the people that lived here for thousands of years in this area live off the land and live together with the animals and even though we’re just tourists they’re really very friendly actually and helped us with everything we needed so great so yeah overall pleased we came up here it’s a long way from denmark but uh really worth yeah spending a few days here just what an amazing wilderness and place to explore okay let’s see what else uh the waitress on the way home i’ve got a few days home in the car now i don’t think there’s any time for biking but we’ll see what we see on the way so okay
