Just installed a new Vittoria Terreno Dry 31c tire on my Roval 38s and it looks like this. I used a new Conti Race 28 700c tube which claims 25-32c fit. I inflated to around 60psi. Maybe the tube is too small to engage the tire on the hooks the whole way around?

(Have has no problems on these rims with road tires for thousands of miles)

Is this a bad tire or is the tube too small?

  1. Not seated properly. Deflate and try again. You can soap the bead if necessary.

  2. Most likely the tire just hasn’t fully popped to the rim. Try inflating to closer to 90 PSI and it could well do the trick.

Tube is the correct size and is not the problem here.

This tire is not fully seated.

Solution: deflate to a lower pressure (10psi?) and work the tire with your fingers to pull the bead into the rim. Tip: you can use soapy water to help it slip more easily! Finally, re-inflate to a high pressure (90+ psi) and expect some load “pops” as the bead snaps into place!

  4. Yep, bead is not seated. I did this recently and it wobbled on the road before it figured out what was happening

I don’t like the ‘more pressure!’ approach. I’ve seen carbon rim walls break. *Maybe* if you hit the bead with soapy water first.. but then it should seat at moderate pressure, not high pressure.

I’ve had luck with very *low* pressure, like 10 or 20 psi, then work the tire laterally with your palms like you’re trying the get the tire off of the rim. It will seat instead.

Also, look for the tire witness line.

  6. Issue aside. Clearance might be an a problem, check the inside of the forks for any friction contact. If there is any rubbing marks go down to 25’s. Much cheaper than fork failure and new false teeth.

I had this problem last week and the soapy water trick everyone mentioned fixed it!

  8. Looks like u didn’t put it on correctly I have the same problem but I’m too lazy to re do

You can partially deflate the tire and massage it into the rim so it sits properly, there is a line for reference, it should be the same distance from the rim all the way around, if not continue on massaging it, tu can add soap on the bead to help, I would recommend removing the wheel from the bike to make it easier
