I've owned this for a few years and just hadn't gotten around to figuring out what the left shifting thing does. I'm trying to be a more responsible bicycle owner. But also not sure what to search up to learn more about the shift.
read the manual? the left shifter transform your drivetrain from 3 speed bicycle to 6 speed. right now you are using only 3 (1+, 2+ and 3+)

Its the derailleur gears, the 2 cogs you see at the back. Think of it like a “trim” gear for smaller spaced gear shifts, like if you’re wanting just a slight bit harder, or easier gear.
Basically, right hand for big gear changes, left hand for small gear changes

Basically, you’re only using half of the gears on your bike. The right shifter handles all the internal gears on the rear hub, while the left shifter does the derailleur gears.
Essentially, you’ve got it set to only use ‘hard’ gears the whole time while having the left shifter in +.

It’s what gives you int intermediate gears.
Correct shifting sequence from 1- up to 3+:
* Left thumb right -> 1+
* Left thumb left and Right thumb left -> 2-
* Left thumb right -> 2+
* Left thumb left and Right thumb left -> 3-
* Left thumb right -> 3+
Down shifting sequence from 3+ to 1-:
* Left thumb left -> 3-
* Left thumb right and right thumb right -> 2+
* Left thumb left -> 2-
* Left thumb right and right thumb right -> 1+
* Left thumb left -> 1-
It sounds really cack handed but you will soon build a muscle memory for it

Hang on you’ve had the bike for a few years and you’ve never used the shifter?

So during the years you’ve had the bike you never tried the shifter and noticed ‘something’ happening? 😳

I have the modern version of this bike, for closer to four years and I never ever use the left gear selector. I leave it on + and just use the hub gear to shift.
