I've been a serious cyclist for about 5 years. I just upgraded to my Aeroad 2 weeks ago. Today when going around a blind turn, an E-biker was in the wrong lane going at an insane speed and collided with me. He hit me so hard that I somehow unclipped, flew into the air, did a flip, and landed on my back. The guy behind me immediately stopped and rushed over to check on me, and then proceeded to tell the E-biker how wrong he was. Once I got out of my daze (I'm in pain and will be absolutely hurting tomorrow) I was helped up and started talking to the witness and the jerk that crashed into me. His massive Ebike was fine and he was trying to play it all off. I didn't know what to do so I called 911 to file a report. While talking to 911 I was explaining how much my bike cost, and the guy that hit me said "What, you think your bike is better than mine?" and then he just got on his bike and sped off. I am absolutely devasted. Posting a pic of my dead girl and the bike that hit me šŸ™ I'm drinking alone, and I'm just sad. This bike was my pride and joy.

Wow that sucks, but he might be a local and that bike is pretty noticable. Hope the police catches him!

  2. Depending on what you can get from the ebiker check your renters insurance and or your credit card for purchase protection – might pay for a new bike in the meantime

Dude, I’m sorry this happened to you. I’m glad you’re ok for the most part… insane

  4. This is so infuriating. Irresponsible people really love E-Bikes. I’m sure his luck will run out eventually, potentially learning his lesson forever if you catch my drift.

I recommend a camera mounted on the bike and/or mounted to your helmet. Especially with expensive gear, having evidence can help significantly. If there are buildings nearby where it happened, you could ask people if their building cameras might have caught something.

Go to a doctor also to have a report that may be useful if police catches the asshole (and to check that everything is fine).

  6. that sucks, sorry for your loss. I hate these ebike assholes , I live right on a bike path and am so sick of entitled low skill riders screaming by.

  7. I’m all for e-bikes but assholes like that absolutely ruin the sport. I always go down to like 5 mph on blind corners near my local trails. There’s always one asshole going down the wrong side at 25+ mph.

Did I see you and this bike at Bladensburg waterfront today? I rode by, police were there and I didn’t imagine you needed yet another rider stopping to see what happened.

Hope you’ll be OK quickly! Sorry for your bike 🄲

I’ve opened a claim with the CC that I used to buy it. If that doesn’t work I’ll try my home owners insurance. There really are just awful people out there.

I hope you take him to court if required.

This ALMOST happened to me yesterday. Kid on ebike WAY in my lane on a corner and he narrowly missed me and almost ended up in the woods.

  11. I got passed by a rotund man on an e-bike today. I was rolling about 16.5 mph and he was going at least 20.

This goof had a tablet clipped to his bars playing a TV show.

20 mph, on a 4 foot wide path, watching office reruns..

Sorry about your bike and your pain OP. Some hazardous folks on these electric bikes.

  12. E-biker on the SART in OC blew a stop sign that was there because of a tunnel that created a blind intersection. Almost killed the lady (in her 50s) when she was riding thru the tunnel exit and he did a blind left turn into the tunnel. Her bike was broken, she went to the hospital. Good on the e-biker for hanging around and providing his info and talking to the cops at least.

That is awful. Ebikes are a fucking menace and need to be banned. In the uk people just use what are basically motorbikes on cycle lanes now. Full face helmets and everything. Had one idiot smash into the back of me with his deliveroo. Luckily i stayed up and he landed in a heap. Hope you take the guy to court.

If he just took off without providing information, I have to wonder if that’s a hit and run!?

Without video or witnesses it’ll be hard to prove who was at fault. On the bright side it looks like a new fork and brake line will be all that’s needed part wise. Maybe try and get the other guy to reimburse you if you can get a hold of him.

Hey bro, glad you’re alive. I was hit by a car last month and a number of people that cared for me in the ER said I was going to be in even worse pain the next day. I refused to believe it. The next day came and I was a bit improved, not worse.

    Stay positive bro

Go to the local bike shops with that photo of the E bike.
Ask if they know him and explain what happened.
If they ride they will feel your pain and be more than happy to help.

    Sorry about the crash.

File a police report and chase them down in small claims court. Fuck them.

I ride various trails and noticed the larger ebike riders (those fat tire 80lbs bikes) are usually off the dirt trails and riding on the pavement paths. In some cases, people are passing on the wrong side, buzzing others who are walking without any warning, or trying to zoom between two other bicycists.

As my son has just started to ride with me, I’m now taking extra concern where we ride. A few things we’re doing, I try to keep a recording of our rides using a camera, I have a 360 camera on my bike that just runs the entire ride, if nothing happens, I just recharge it for the next ride. But it’s enough to capture anything around us. I try to stick near the less popular paths, the wider paths, especially near housing tracks seem to be too busy for us. I found parks near the edge of the city are ideal, lots of these ebikes are not going to be transported but riden.

  20. After an accident it really helps to have someone gather pertinent info for you. It takes time to focus on what will be important in a day or two let alone at the time of the accident. These days bystanders may be reluctant to get involved but gathering info for a possibly concussed person could help in the future. I mention this to suggest if anyone witnesses an accident involving a bike to consider acting on behalf of the rider.

  21. I’m all for ebikes, but the number of fat tire stupidly heavy e-bikes I see on paved paths is insane. Granted I live in Colorado where there’s plausible deniability that someone might be going on gravel or dirt on those, but I still feel it’s pretty unlikely for the most part. At least the people I’ve seen aren’t total morons with them but it’s probably only a matter of time.

  22. I hate them so much! They’re heavy, fast, and more often than not in the hands of some enormous, unskilled, uncaring rider who realizes that he or she can go as fast as a car in the bike lane without even pedaling.

  23. Otherwise_Seaweed681 on

I just don’t understand why people are like this. Whenever I see a fellow cyclist pulled over I always slow down to ask them if they need help. If I see someone with a flat I ask them if they have what they need. I just can’t fathom just having a lack of human decency. It’s a wake up call for sure. Some people just suck. Like, I’ve hit a parked car before by accident, and I left all of my information in their window for them to call me. I don’t believe in karma or anything, I just hope this jerk learned from this and doesn’t hurt/kill someone else.

  24. If the insurance companies to don’t pan out I wonder if a ā€˜go fund me’ account would work. I may be naĆÆve but I’d like to think people would contribute a small amount with the idea that total contributions would cover the replacement cost.

  25. gymtrovert1988 on

This could be an ad for that ebike. Quick, call up that company and tell them you’re available for booking!

  26. Boxofbikeparts on

You need to call the local bike mafia. Give them the photo of that e bike, and they will see to it that he understands what he did was wrong.

  27. So sorry this happened OP, hope you are ok.

Try posting on r/CanyonBikes I believe the team from Canyon respond directly. They might help you out with a bike replacement?

  28. I’m sorry you had this crash. Nearly every ride, I see irresponsible e-bike riders. Many of these e-bikes are of the fat tire variety. I primarily ride on the Monon Trail and Central Midland Trail in Carmel and Westfield, IN. It’s getting ridiculous. It’s only a matter of time when one of these asses seriously injures or kills someone in my area.

  29. So many e-bikes these days are just electric motorcycles that can be ridden without any training, licensing, registration, or insurance, and frankly it pisses me the ef off.

There are a few kids round here that rip around them without a care in the world. It’s only a matter of time before the inevitable happens.

Hopefully it’s not a huge deal to get fixed. Sorry about the situation.

  30. You didn’t mention your injuries but it sounds like you’re relatively ok. The bike is just money, it will be replaced. Stay safe, brother. I feel like the tide is turning against e-bikes and local jurisdictions will be forced to regulate these morons soon.

You can post flyers around with a description of the dude and the bike and ask if anyone has information.
