I've been wanting to get back into bike riding, mainly my neighbor and some local dirt trails, but my bike is pretty old, rusty and hodge podge. I used to have an all yellow mountain type bike but the rear end got smashed in , so my dad fitted his old mountain bike to it, and just used the front end of my bike. I rode it like this all through college.
I love wrenching on things, so I'm not opposed to put in elbow grease, but does it even make since to put the proper tread tires on this bike? is it a big deal that the rear size is 26in and the front 24in?

Sanctions are pretty rusted but can’t see where the travel is very well….By the time you get tires/tubes/cables/forks/grips you might be into it close to a used bike if you can’t do the labor yourself. Older bikes can become a bit of a snowball of work.
You can always attempt to air it up and send it! 🙂
I don’t really see anything wrong with this bike. Sure, it’s going to be a project bike, but below the surface rust and grime, it’s a nice starter bike. If the tires are old and dry, they’ll need replacing. Other consumables like cables/housing, brake pads, and grips are probably in order. With a little lube, you can determine of the shifters and derailleurs are working properly. The wheels look tired, but they’ll probably be okay for a while and will need replacing at some point later after you determine if it’s going to be worth that investment – if you are that far into it you can consider replacing the fork with the correct size. A co-op will have used parts for this. If you like wrenching and want a project, this is good – I’d do it!
