Dive into all the behind-the-scenes details from the trainers to the cooling vests, fans to secret trainers in team vehicles, to how exactly the riders get to the starting lines.
I take you step by step through the team technical zone to show how it all works, from warm-up to UCI checks, to the starting line.
In this video I dive into all the behind-the-scenes bits on time-trial day, including which smart trainers they use. However, realistically, it’s actually quite a bit more than that in this video. I look at an interesting new trend in how the warm-ups are done, as well as some of the crazy cooling gear athletes and teams use. Plus, what happens step-by-step from when a rider steps out of the team van and to their trainer, all the way up to the starting line.
Interestingly, this is the first year we’ve seen a trainer in the technical zone that’s not from one of the big legacy trainer makers (Wahoo/Garmin-Tacx/Elite/Saris), so that was kinda fun to check out. Here’s the full listing of exactly what they’re riding, with all of these highlighted up in the full walk-through video above:

Interestingly and totally unrelated, this was one of the quietest years I’ve seen in the technical zone at a TdF time trial day. I’m not sure if it was because everyone was simply out on the course, or perhaps the location, or what. Ironically, it was BY FAR the most spectator-friendly technical zone setup for a TT stage I’ve seen in years. It varies by every single stage/day/town layout, and is often just a product of available land for all the team buses. But someone could have shot the same video as me from the sidelines without a media pass – a rarity most days. Still, there were very few people around. TV coverage does seem to indicate most were up on the course.

Yates rides of to the start and somebody yells "Gooo Pogacar" – that's funny! Great video BTW.
Suddenly have a lot of respect for israel premiertech
7:20 The day matches the temperature pretty well!
Great insight into the 'behind the scenes' world of the TDF! Thank you.
bro how did u say alpecin lol
7:24 – a good day to die it seems
this is a very good content. well done. Thank you. i will be checking for more.
I watched this whole video all the way through. I enjoyed seeing the different types of trainers and headwind fans. Of course I don't have any of that stuff, but with the stationary cycles I do have (and the normal fans) I felt inspired. Funny– I remember you and your channel from doing research about how to use my GoPro cameras…. Thanks for Making This!
great ! CeramicSpeed products are made Holstebro, Denmark
Is every team car for every team skoda?
Thanks so much Ray. Have been following you for years and you never disappoint.
PS Tour coverage in Australia utter crap. That’s the commentary, behind the scenes. Everything.
Thank goddess for you!
minor question: why do some of the riders early in this video have their noses plugged with cotton balls? Any ideas?
Why get warm when it is 35° ! I will take a bath with ice ! That s not the best place to park, no vegetation on the back, they should put some white of Meudon on the road…
Did you catch the part where they sat in hotel rooms and re-infused their blood?😂😂😂
It would be cool to get a glimpse of the maintenance schedule these teams follow during the big tours. How often are they swapping out the drive train, pads, tires, etc.?
Great content! Thank you!
On a lighter note – concerned about the number of men in cuffed blue-jean shorts. 🫣 The 1980’s are calling. . . They want their fashion back.😆
great content sir!
I appreciate the breakdown of who is using which trainer at the end but what blatantly seems more important and totally unanswered is the washing machine breakdown. Which teams are using which washing machines!
forget about pineapple lets talk about melons
Lotto Dstny isnt a world tour team either but they still got the fancy garmin fences
most useful video in a year
So basically they use whatever the sponsor pay them to use and not some that are better then others. I call it bribery much like in politics, money talks. Lame.
Me: how long before my warmup becomes energy-sapping counterproductive? Errr…2 mins😂
Thanks Ray. Always dig your BTS stuff. What is the name of that lower priced fan? 💨
Kind of interesting but then again not really as the trainer does not matter a whole bunch for a warmup. Or I cannot imagine how it should.
can someone explain why some of the guys are warming up with cotton in their noses?
Really see how small Jonas is next to the team staff.
I hat TTs, stupid stage, but this presentation was fantastic. Thanks!
I am also now onboard Team Pineapple
This was a really awesome video I watched every stage this year that was an insane time trial by Jonnas
2023 and still masking???
If there was more TT in this tour de france jonas vineg would win by hour 😂
Rules for thee, but not for me. Masks required in the fence area, yet almost everyone is NOT wearing one. More covid shenanigans!
AlpeKin lol
How is the fan called that Uno X uses?
Nice video, but the audio is not very good
What is the fan that Uno X uses? Any links to them in Canada?
Nice to see BTS
Great Suff !!
Slow down man..
