Epic downhill enduro mountain bike rip with Freeride Madeira! Such a fun day ripping around Madeira Island with an epic crew. This was one of my favorite tracks of the day, up in a really cool zone named “Curral das Freiras”. Portuguese translation: “Nuns’ Valley”. The name comes from the 16th century, when nuns from the Santa Clara Convent in Funchal fled to this remote mountain valley to escape pirate attacks (especially French privateers). The valley’s steep cliffs and isolation made it a natural refuge.
The nuns took shelter there and lived among the local people, and over time, the area became known as Curral das Freiras. A little bit of island history! Now revealed as one of the best MTB zones there is.

This track starts high on the mountain with some fast straights and steep rock gardens. As the trail progresses, you hit some quick back to back toboggan style berms before ripping into the eucalyptus forest. Bucho has everything you could ask for.

Thanks again to our guide Claudio from Freeride Madeira.
