Team Rocket and Groot consisting of Livy Leonard (17) and Yasemin Maras (18) from Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School in Kent, took home the Silver Award.
Their project tackled local traffic issues by suggesting practical changes to a local roundabout including clearer signage, better lane markings, removing visual obstructions and adding a dedicated cycle lane to improve road safety.

Today marks a historic day. I am here at Gear Road where engineers have decided to create something called roundabout. Here comes a worker. Now, what do you think these will change about the world? I think they’re going to change the world. You heard it here, folks. Roundabouts were a big mistake. I’m here at Old Road roundabout and there has been seven crashes in the last week, including one fatal. Canterbury just just cannot cope with getting out of here. Run for your That was 5 years ago. Since then, times have changed. Two engineers Levy Leonard and Yasmo Maras have revolutionized roundabouts and saved Tante from certain doom. How may you ask? Well, let’s hear from them themselves. We were so excited to take on this project. So, this is our not to scale model of a roundabout. Yeah. And at first, we would remove the tallest trees from the center of the roundabout and plant them elsewhere to remain carbon neutral. and then we would replace them with a community organized centerpiece so that this brings people together and also brings biodiversity to an untouched area. Um, another thing we took from our own experience of driving and research was 25% of people don’t know how to indicate correctly at roundabouts. So, we designed a sign to remind people to indicate um when there’s so much other things, so many other things to remember at a roundabout. Another cause of crashes is that most drivers don’t know how to use their lanes properly. So, we decided to label these lanes with dotted and solid lines on the signs so that this would teach drivers to use the correct lanes. Um, if we had enough money, we would also add a cycle lane on the outside of a roundabout. Uh, just under a third of cyclist deaths happen at roundabouts and junctions. So adding a cycle lane would improve uh cyclist confidence and also uh drivers awareness of cyclists on the road.
