Remco Evenepoel dominated the Tour de France 2025 Stage 5 time trial in Caen. He, along with new race leader Tadej Pogacar in second on the day, delivered a big blow to Jonas Vingegaard at 1:21 back. We break down the day. #TDF

Stage five of the 2025 Tour to France here in Khan at Remco Evanapole proved why he’s the world champion, why he’s the Olympic champion today in the 33 km time trial, starting and ending here up in the northwest of France. Remco Evanapul stormed the course today, clocking 36 minutes and around 40 seconds, topping early pace setter Eduardo Afini by 33 seconds. That time would prove at the end of the day enough to win the stage, mirroring what he did last year in the 2024 Tour to France, his debut in his first stage win in the Tour to France. Now, take note of the early pace setters. As we mentioned, Eduardo Afeni, he set the best pace early on, it was Luke Plap through those first time checks that held a good time. But as Afeni in that third time check and at the finish that was the early pace setter in the mark to beat from team Visma Lisa bike, they were letting three of their guys go full pace today. Also including Matteo Jorgensson and of course two-time tour of France winner Yonas Vingaga, who I must say had a shocking result. And we’re going to get to that here in a minute. I want to take note of Primos Ragglitch, Jirealia, of Walt Espña, winner, allaround champion, who had a decent ride, not the best, a former Olympic champion, time trialist, clocking around 1 minute 19 seconds back of the eventual time of Remco Evanapul on the day. But the time we want to look at and focus on is Yonas Vigal because we could see from the early markers time check one time check two midway point and then time check three it was not going to be a good day and especially when you’re stacking up not only against Ramco but Tad Pogachar three-time tour to France winner and today taking the yellow jersey off the shoulders of Matthew Vanderpool who himself did a pretty decent ride right there in that group of Ragglitch, of Jorgensson, and eventually of Yonas Fingerg, who clocked around 1 minute and 20 seconds. Not a great time at all for the Danish champion. Today would have been a day for him to lay down the law as he did the day before, marking Tatt Pugachar in that uphill kicker to the finish line. But today, he was unable to do what he did in the doofen, riding a better TT. The same with Jorgensson. I would say Jorgensson and Vigga had a disappointing ride today. It Vigga, we heard from him in the mix zone afterwards. He said the legs just were not there and you could see the disappointment. You could hear the disappointment in his voice as he explained it. Asked if it was too much now to consider the tour of France out of reach. Well, he said the tour of France in recent years has been won by more time than one minute. So, let’s see. That’s what we want to hear. great fighting spirit because we still have so many stages and we haven’t even yet hit the high mountains. And this Yonas, I can tell you by watching the first four stages, he has a kick that he hasn’t had before. And especially when you’re matching him up against Tatty Pagachar in Tatty Pagachar out there on the polka dot jersey today. Dodgy jersey, even dodgier shorts, but he did it proud and he exchanged it at the end of the day for the Mayo Jean, the race leader jersey. taking it off the shoulders of Matthew Vanderpool. Now the race favorite is in the race lead. Tatt Pagotch just finishing around 16 seconds back of our Olympic and world champion. A Remco Evanapole, a stage winner on the day whose gold helmet and gold bits and bobs on a Specialized bike. We’re shining in this late afternoon sun after so many days of rain. Finally, we’re greeted with warm weather out there on the day. And at one point, Tatty Pagachar looked to be threatening Remco having a pull’s time. We didn’t quite know if Remco would win the stage until Tad flew across the finish line setting that time that he set. And he’s going to be super happy with the time today, putting around a minute and 12, minute and 10 seconds in on his number one rival, Yonas Vaga. 2022 2023 Turf France champion is going to have to go back to the drawing board and recalculate some things. speak with the head DS tonight, Gisha Nearman, and figure out what’s going on and recalibrate because we have some more classic type crosswind stages as we head towards stage 10, Mont door rest day in the massive central transferring down to the Pyrenees when we get those first high mountains and another TT as well, a mountain TT and then of course we’re over to the Alps and then finally the wrap up in Paris. But clearly at the end of the day, well, what we got was Remco Evanapulle putting himself back in the GC fight, Primos Raglitch showing that he doesn’t quite have it to win the tour to France in his career. But we’re going to have to see because you never know with Raglitch. And if he gets to stage 10 without a crash, well, he’s set for something special. And we got the showing from Ramco Evanapool that he’s just not here to pick up TTS. He’s got the watts and the legs to potentially challenge Tade Pogachar for the 2025 overall victory. And so the GC as it stands after 17 hours and 22 minutes of racing, Tad leads by 42 seconds over to Remco Evan a pole. Kevin Van who’s really lighting up the roads out here. Home roads today in Normandy. And the fans were going nuts for him out there. 59 seconds back giving the French fans something to cheer for. and Yonas Vingagawa dropping back to fourth overall at 113 right behind his teammate Matteo Jorgensson. Then Matthew Vanderpool sliding from first to sixth overall. Further down Primos Raglitch eighth at 230, but his own teammate knocking on the door and showing he could be leader Numero Uno in these next stages. Florian Lipowitz at 231 and Matias Gilmo back at 232 in 10th place. We still have a lot to fight for in this race, but closing the day, it’s Remco Evanapul on top, time trial champion, winning the stage, stage five, and Tatty Pagachar in yellow on top of the 2025 Tour to France.

  1. The dauphine was a bluff for Tadej i guess? Maybe some mind tricks. Cant wait for the mountains. Still 1000s of km to go.

  2. As predicted. I had Pogacar in yellow and Remco second overall after this stage. I don't see anyone clawing back time on Pogacar now, he will most likely be in yellow all the way to France unless he crashes.

  3. Remember the 2023 Tour, Stage 11, Col du Grannon.
Roglic and Vingegaard attacked Pog, and he cracked and loss the Tour.
    Losing 3 minutes.
My 2 cents worth, its not over until the mountains are finished.
    Vingegaard had a bad day.
2023, Col du Grannon, I thought, Pog, was on his way to his 3rd Tour.
    Nope.
Roglic, had it in the bag on 2020.
    That was insane
It aint over, until Paris celebrates.
