But the flu wasn’t finished.
The second wave struck in late summer and fall of 1918. This time, it returned more deadly—. It’s believed the virus mutated in the trenches of WW1. Where men were crowded and left in unsanitary conditions. Giving the virus the perfect environment to evolve, as it jumps from man to man. As new meat would continually cycle in and out of the meat grinder.
From there, it traveled with infected troops, reaching Brest, France, a major Entente supply port. Then it spread globally—aboard cargo ships carrying weapons, supplies, and men.
In the U.S., the second wave arrived in Boston, Massachusetts, likely brought by French naval recruits training at American bases.
Then came Philadelphia.
On September 28, 1918, over 200,000 people gathered for the Liberty Loans Parade to support the war effort. It became a super-spreader event. According to the CDC, within a month, 30,000 cases were reported in the city, and 12,000 people had died. The outbreak spread rapidly across North America, then into Central and South America.
In Europe, the virus surged again, carried by British troops into Africa and the Middle East. Once more, it spread worldwide.
The second wave proved to be the deadliest. Unlike typical flu strains that primarily affect the very young and elderly, this one struck down healthy young adults—especially soldiers. Researchers believe this was due to a combination of the virus’s strength and the intense conditions of warfare: stress, exhaustion, poor nutrition, and cramped quarters made soldiers more vulnerable to the new strand.
Oddly, those who caught the flu during the first wave had a higher chance of surviving the second. Their bodies had already developed partial immunity.
Many American troops fell ill on their way to Europe, traveling aboard overcrowded ships. Some died before even stepping foot on European soil.
