If this is a dedicated one-way MTB trail, those people are absolutely in the wrong. But if it’s a multi-use or bidirectional trail, you shouldn’t ride so fast that you can’t stop if there’s an obstacle.
They are idiots, if you want to stop and chat then get right off the trail
