hi everyone welcome to Nice Cycling 15 We’re going to start off today’s episode with three clips from Matt A non-event Another non-event You won’t get many views on Twitter riding like this Matt Potentially arriving at the same point in the same time Good cyclists stop this from happening Poor cyclists make it happen My viewer realized early that they were possibly stuck behind the Apillar Great riding Who knows which country this was sent in from anyone know what country this is answers in the comments apart from my viewer obviously I think this is a subtle but a great piece of riding This crossroads up ahead is a little confusing with the bend and my viewer intends to continue ahead The low down riding position of this bike also increases the danger If there’s going to be a lot of decisions made by a lot of motorists don’t get involved This is also a clear sign to the other motorists that my viewer wasn’t wishing to proceed before them Keeping yourself safe has to be the primary concern for any road user not just cyclists Here’s another quick three from Matt Notice how he’s really aware of the vehicle on the left The slight position change gave him options Matt’s also an expert at working out whether or not he’s been seen with cars approaching roundabouts The subtle and early speed alterations make things a non-event I also agree not giving way to that pedestrian They were walking behind Knowing when to seed priority is the mark of a good road user And in this situation it was better for Flo It also didn’t cost Matt any time on his journey I must admit though cycling in London is a whole different level But if you’re good enough you can still do the correct things My viewer finds a great little pocket of space to pop out around the van and the bus and then is also switched on enough to realize the bus has got a right signal on and they correctly hold back and give priority Nice job Even though it sounds like there’s a blurt of a driver behind This is a bit different to London but with the correct tires and equipment I’m sure it’s good fun Nice job for getting out on it And I suppose this is about as busy as it gets Trying to go past on this downhill section wouldn’t have been a good idea Nice riding Have you ever ridden in conditions like this and how did you find it back to the UK and SUV drivers who can’t steer Nicely spotted Bonnet lickers as I call them Three hazards easily dealt with in quick succession nicely adjusted speed to make all three non-events I think it would be nice to feature more footage like this If you record anything with cyclists doing a particularly good job please send it in And the cyclist that we see up ahead emerging from this road on the left does a brilliant job My viewer does well also appreciates where the cyclist is and gives them space But it’s clear the lorry driver is going to continue But the cyclist is already on to it They’ve adjusted their speed and they’re going to take the space behind I’ve done this a number of times Have you you got everything you need yeah I think so It’s probably just about knockout to get me home mate Thank you very much Oh we got 100 kit Yeah I’ve got I’ve got over here just whether this thing goes on properly or not I saw the uh line bike back home with bike and shed Yeah Thanks for the operation Oh too nice I tell you what not the worst thing to be sitting in the shade for a little bit SP have a good day [Music] Three more good examples from Matt Sorry again Staying out of trouble and leaving options The way Matt changes speed to manage risk is an example to many cyclists And he makes it look really easy Thanks for your support Matt by sending in so many great clips And that thanks also goes out to every single one of my viewers who contribute these brilliant clips Without you episodes like this are impossible to make Thank you so much Now on to this final clip My viewer spots this Fiesta’s petrol cap was open so they slow down Now I wouldn’t advise doing this unless you’ve made contact with the driver first Some drivers aren’t going to understand that you’re trying to help them but in any case the thought was there and it was successful I wonder whether the driver actually spotted what my viewer was doing Anyway it was successful It was a non-event my viewer didn’t get shouted at Keep safe everyone I’ll see you all soon

  1. On the snowy clip – that could be my winter commute, although there's not generally as much snow as that on the actual cycle path. More often, it's refrozen slush in huge slicks. It's fine with studded tyres and plenty of anticipation. The worst is getting off your bike onto sheet ice when you get where you're going, wearing standard shoes.

  2. That red VW at 1:04 had the darkest tints I've seen in a long time. Are they illegal in Ireland? At any rate, perfect example for why they're dangerous. Edit: Oops, it's Australia. The yellow road signs remind me of Ireland.
Yep, I've ridden in conditions like that snow and ice quite a lot. Studded tyres and the ability to plan ahead make the difference. Also, stay away from UK drivers, who by and large haven't a clue.

  3. Matt is the best rider / driver in Aberystwyth. Never dissapoints with his clips – sharp reactions, very observant and vigilant. This is proper smart cycling.

    1:30 is Czech Republic 🙂

  4. Great to see these clips. It restores an element of faith in Human Nature.
I agree; the final clip could've resulted in an argument and would have attempted to get the Driver's attention before closing the filler cap.

Anyway….. I had a 🧠fart last night and was a day ahead of myself for some reason.
Of course – today is Friday 😮

  5. When the clip around 4:44 first happened, my initial thoughts were the cyclist should be giving way to vehicles on the road

Then I realised that if we all work together, create space for each other and don’t rush into things claiming priority then we can have an effective emerge in turn (slight play on words intended) and get to our destinations

  6. Ive done the last clip of kindness. Lights on red I went upto the driver tapped the window to say and closed the cap. Saying that if im driving and i see a car has a soft tyre and I have the opportunity I will try to inform the driver

  7. The last clip is mine!

I can confirm I did get the lady's attention before I closed the petrol cap, after I completed the maneuver she gave me a thumbs up 😊

  8. “Have you ever ridden in conditions like this?”

Not as deep as that but yes, I have ridden in snow

    “How did you find it?”

Less road rash on the knees when I came off but more knee ache trying to push through the snow 😁

  9. With regards to the last clip, I often used to let drivers know about failed brake lights that they might not be aware of. Nowadays, with so many not caring about their cars, I will only do it for certain vehicles, one of those being Driving School vehicles

A question, if I inform the person sitting in the passenger seat a brake lights isn’t working, if that person is an examiner would the pupil fail for driving a vehicle with a defect?

  10. Honestly, he hasn't got a clue. The correct thing to do when a pedestrian walks out in front of you is to adjust your direction slightly so that you can cycle furiously towards him, brake violently and then scream at him that he's on video. How else can you teach him a lesson? I thought everyone knew this.

  11. We like Matt! He cycles like I cycle and drive 🙂 I wish we got re-tested every 5 years so I could show how awesome I am at doing things properly.
I don't want a medal, I'm happy with my driving licence and my Bikeability level 1,2 and 3 badges… Go me! Stay say all. A brilliant video, Ashley.

  12. How long will his good will and thoughtfullness last?

The roads have a way of turning people into fire breathing rage filled demons.

Even Ashley has been know to lose his temper and become confrontatinal on the road.

  13. So easy when your name's Matt not Jeremy
Red car in the first three's claasic sensible riding Let him go first first then he's not tempted to squeeze past where there's no room

  14. Thank you for featuring so many of my clips again, I used to cycle in London for many years so that’s taught me a lot and I use that in my every day rides. I hope these can help others in keeping themselves safe and everyone else around them also.

    Stay safe!

  15. I should hope that first clip was a non-event – the pedestrian was crossing the side road well before the cyclist turned into it and had priority!
edit: crikey – the second clip the cyclist could have kept going, the driver was correctly yielding and the third one the van had priority over the cyclist anyway! It's hardly nice cycling, just cycling??!

  16. 2:29 you don't have to stop to give way to a crossing pedestrian when you are cycling. In fact, due to the low speed and narrowness of a cycle, it's very rare that you would actually need to stop to allow a pedestrian to cross. So, IMO, the cyclist did give way to the pedestrian here.

  17. I love riding in the snow. I have a Surly Wednesday, and I've never slid once. The hardest part is dressing appropriately. Too many layers, and you are sweating after 100 yards. You have to start out a little cold and carry layers to put on when you stop. It's great fun.

  18. I've cycled in snow – about 20 – 25 years back – Raleigh Activator (early full suspension bike) Apart from indifferent (rim) brakes, the only real trouble I had was the rear deraiileur clogging up and freezing! The actual gear stayed fairly clear, because I had one of those things – I forget the name – where the plastic teeth went in between the rings on the rear gearcone, and kept most of the muck out.

  19. 1:48 Speedplay pedals! I tried them years ago (possibly 20 years ago 😬) but just didnt feel like there was enough contact area. Maybe they work better when you're riding a recumbent.

  20. Snow like that is entirely normal where I live, in Finland. It's a regular ritual for both cars and cyclists – those who don't pack up the bike for the winter, anyway – to change to winter tyres and back to summer ones. Extra care is required to maintain traction, and there will be more rolling resistance than normal, but compacted snow is a pretty good riding surface. Black ice, not so much, but with studded tyres it's usually survivable. Deep snow, however, is a royal pain. Even with a super low gear, it's often better to get off and push.

  21. 1:20 That one is probably from Australia. My next guess would be its next door neighbour, New Zealand. They drive on the left like us Brits, but use more American-style signs and road layouts. The pedestrian crossing sign is a dead giveaway.

  22. stumbled across a UK cycling clip today titles "10 rules to ignore" so I watched it expecting to see traffic codes – but instead it was rules levied by people who gatekeep cycling – and he closed the video with the 1 rule you never ignore. paraphrased, it is "don't be a jerk." so there are good cycling youtubers out there.

  23. "You won't get many views on Twitter riding like this Matt" – the problem with social media (even youtube to an extent) summed up right there, Ashley.

SM has moved from being a place to connect with others, to a place to generate views, thus financial reward for the social media companies and "content creators".
There are a lot of excellent creators putting out content that is useful and insightful or simply entertaining, however there's an awful lot which is geared toward faux-outrage, clickbait, and winding people up, and those seem to get more promotion for the obvious reason they produce more revenue for the SM companies.

2:27 – that Peugeot (?) was going to go no matter whether it was Matt on his bike, another car, a bus or a lorry.

7:44 – now just waiting for someone of the anti-cycling lot to comment "They're going too fast" etc.

  24. Ashley trying to pretend his last video didnt give appalling advice that would get you squashed like a bug. Not gonna work, you talentless narcissistic hack 😂

  25. 3:50 I remember very clearly riding in conditions like that in Birmingham, a stone's throw from HMP Winson Green, about the turn of the century. I travelled most of the way down a hill on my rear end, my bike spinning slowly beside me, watched by a bloke on his doorstep in a dressing gown.

  26. 3:46 – I remember riding my bike as a kid in similar weather. I went through an icy puddle and it messed up my tyre.

As I pushed it home, I was gutted as I thought I'd need a new one, and didn't know if/when I'd get one. But if memory serves my dad deflated it and then carefully repositioned the inner tube with an old spoon.

Haven't thought about that in probably 25+ years. Funny how memories unlock sometimes.

  27. Going to stick my head over the parapet here. Matt's clips are amazing but 😏 in the third clip I sometimes continue, especially if it's the kerb side and not parked cars. My reasoning.
    1. It's my choice but it depends on location, traffic levels and what I gain or avoid.
    2. It can get me far ahead of cars coming up behind. Creates a long pocket of space.
    3. If it's a long stretch with me at the front you either need to be in primary holding up the queue or inviting lot's of Jeremy Vine content.
    4. It's very useful on steep sections to again create a buffer behind.
    5. Maybe it even creates best flow?
    6. Safer knowing what's in front and not worryng about what's behind.

  28. I always like to thank drivers when on a bike and just be generally considerate on the road. A smile or wave always makes life better.

Most people are decent and the dashcam only shows the worst.
