If you’re wondering if their screws are any better up the range, the pads in my Ultegra calipers are currently being held by a cotter pin.

Those retaining bolts are made of cheese. Hopefully those bolts you’re using are better quality.

I typically replace the bolts with a cotter pin. I’ve seen too many of them get corroded and as the other commenter said, they just seem cheap.

  3. 7,000 miles in all sorts of weather, heavy rider, e bike, lotsa hills, and I never had a problem with the cotter pin on these brake calipers. Each time I get a new set of pads it comes with a new cotter pin so I just replace it. Not sure what the value in replacing it with a bolt is.

  4. I dont know man. The cotter pin has never really failed in my 8 years of bike shop work. I’ve definitely dealt with corroded and stripped securing bolts though.

Just make sure you don’t tighten it! At all! Let the security clip do its job. Cotter pins have never let me down and I’ve never had to go to the table vise to undo one. A threaded m4 on the other hand… the least of your worries is when you scrape the ever-loving shit out of the caliper body when the thing seizes in place and all you have at your disposal is a lot of creativity. It looks cleaner, but I consider the m4 a serious downgrade in every way.
