That was a low-end Trek so it’s likely the pedal threads weren’t greased.
You actually would have been better off just replacing / upgrading the whole crankset since those have rivited steel chainrings and there are tons of better ones out there cheap since everyone’s going 1X.
Did you also figure out too late the drive-side is reverse-threaded and you were just tightening it the whole time?
