Heat danger?

Hi everyone!

Next year I’m leaving Treviso (nearby Venice) on 12/04 and I’m doing this tour.
The yellow number should approximately represent the months I’m taking to reach each spot. (I’ll be really slow I know)

Mid May: Andorra
Mid June: Gibraltar
Mid July: North of Spain
Mid August: Lyon

I’m starting to worry about the heat waves, here in Italy the last weeks have been terrible. Crazy humidity and 40°C+.
Does someone already cycled around Spain on that period?
Is it possible to deal with the heat?

Just leave at 4 or 5am and do 100km before the sun gets to be too much. Find somewhere cool to rest then go again in the late afternoon. That’s what I did otherwise you’ll go through your liquids in no time in the blazing mid day/early aft heat. But seeing as you’re only doing roughly 50km a day on average it looks like, just leave early.

I cycled from Zürich to Valencia in 2022, although I was a little faster than you – it took me 13 days.
The weather was up to 40 degrees along the Rhone and the Mediterranean.
It was bearable tho because we slept during mid day and there was always water close.
So prepare for intense sun and carry a lot of water.

I could only carry three bottles and it was by no means enough in Spain!

  3. You know the answer already… its dangerously hot to ride in Spain anytime past 11am during the summer, even if you ride at dawn or dusk, why would you spend the rest of the day like a stray dog being miserable sheltering from the sun… even in the shade it will be stupid hot. Wait till mid September if you can. Lodging will be cheaper too. Greetings from Spain
