We at the racing bike magazine TOUR not only test racing bikes but of course also gravel bikes. As a special feature this season, there are also five models that are equipped with accessories suitable for everyday use as standard. The Cube Nuroad FE particularly stood out in this comparison because the bike won the test with a good grade of 2.3. And the cool thing about it: at €1599, the bike isn’t even expensive, it was actually the cheapest in this comparison. All information about the bike is now available in this video. Gravel bikes have been the growth segment in recent years. This is mainly because the bikes can be used in a particularly versatile way. They are not only used as sports and fun equipment or as touring bikes. Wide-tired bikes with racing handlebars are now also a common sight in everyday life and in city traffic . Many manufacturers also prepare the installation of protective panels, the accommodation of luggage for trips and some even have a lighting system in mind when designing the frame. If the accessories are installed by the manufacturer from the outset, this has the advantage that the components are well coordinated with each other and should work better than later adapted solutions. The bottom line is that it is usually cheaper and saves a lot of craft work and, last but not least, it looks better too. For the manufacturer Cube, the gravel bike Nuroad with everyday equipment is a success story. The Nuroad FE, FE stands for fully equipped, is one of the most popular models from the Brangen giant from Upper Palatinate. The manufacturer from Waldershof currently offers two versions of the aluminum gravel bike . The cheapest version is available for an incredible €999. However, the 8-speed gearshift and mechanical disc brakes are no longer technically up to date. Things are completely different with the top variant we tested, which is still extremely inexpensive compared to the comparably equipped competition. The bike comes with modern hydraulic disc brakes and the latest update of the Shimano GRX gravel gears. With 12 slots on the rear wheel and two chainrings at the front, it offers an extremely wide and finely graduated range of gears, which makes the bike suitable for long journeys where steep mountains with luggage have to be overcome, but also a sporty gear with the gearbox still in there. The mechanical shifting works smoothly and confidently, the brakes are reliable and snappy, just as you are used to from Shimano. At just over 12 kg, the Cube Nuroad FE is not particularly light for a gravel bike. But it shares fate with its competitions. This is of course due to the many accessories installed, but also to the fact that manufacturers in this price range usually use relatively heavier aluminum frames for cost reasons. Measured against this, the Cube is absolutely competitive. Once in motion, the bike impresses with its stoic straight-line stability and requires little concentration, even on rough terrain . Agile driving maneuvers, on the other hand, are not its strength, but the extremely stiff aluminum frame scores with unshakable running smoothness, which should not cause beads of sweat to appear on the foreheads of even heavy riders when they set off on a fast descent loaded with luggage. Decent comfort levels help on long journeys. The slim seat post in particular has good suspension. Of course, the tires provide the most comfort, because the Cube also allows for 40 mm wide gravel tires, even with mudguards, which can be driven with a correspondingly low pressure. A G1 Overland from Schwalbe is installed here with a relatively fine profile, which is particularly durable and therefore fits well with the concept of the bike. Apart from a somewhat fiddly seat post clamp, the bike has a pleasantly simple design. The classic ahead stem with clamped handlebars and external cables, which enables easy adjustment of the seating position, has become almost a rarity . The extremely upright position that results from a standard rising stem can be weakened in just a few steps by turning the stem over. Then the position is sportier, but the frame with a long head tube still provides a comparatively comfortable and Position suitable for long distances. Cube goes all out when it comes to accessories. The Nuroad FE even includes a blade and a solid side stand as standard. The competition often doesn’t offer that. But there is also criticism of some details. So we would replace the simple blade with a model that is louder and more comfortable to use. We also find the mudguards worthy of criticism because they are a bit too narrow for the 40 mm gravel tires installed. When it rains, some water always splashes past the metal sheets. Slightly narrower road tires would therefore suit the bike better, even if the ride comfort would suffer somewhat. The rear mudguard in particular should be significantly longer so that those behind don’t get wet in the rain. We really liked the front headlight, which, together with the Shutter Precision Dynamo, is really bright and illuminates the road evenly. We just don’t think the attachment to the handlebars is quite optimal. The rear light, which is integrated into the mudguard, is elegant and also quite bright, but it is difficult to see from the side, especially since it is partially covered by the luggage rack. The elegant strap initially only accommodates side pockets with a click system; nothing can be attached to the top. The accessories include an attachment with a classic spring flap for retrofitting. Apart from the small weaknesses, the Cube offers a lot of bike for the money. The bike is an absolute recommendation, especially for touring cyclists or commuters who only occasionally get into the rain. The Cube Nuroad FE is particularly impressive with its high driving stability, good driving comfort and its robust and high-quality features and, last but not least, an unbeatable price.
