Our most amazing overnight destination https://paradores.es/en/parador-de-hondarribia.
Today is my big birthday. We were supposed to ride one of the best cols in the Pyrenees; the Col d’Aubisque. Sadly on the day we were there it was closed.
We make an alternative route west from our previous hotel Le Picors to discover the hidden beauty of Hondarribia

yes good morning folks we are back on the road and look at that for a view a the sun is shining finally is just been so waiting for a a sunny day and look at that the snow still up there and uh We’ve a slight deviation to our original plan today our original plan was to go right here and across really quite Nery pass back into Spain yes today’s plan is to leave our lovely French hotel and head over back into Spain to Hond Reba which is right on the coast and is right on the border between France and Spain all the GPX files and root notes are available in a Dropbox Link in the description of the video below today’s plan was about 130 mies but obviously with the detour there was a few more miles on top of that such beautiful views from our hotel Laos it was a shame to leave really but uh we must move on it’s probably one of our greatest disappointments of the trip that we weren’t able to ride this road the d918 and it’s immediately out of where we were staying we were so looking forward to it and uh we’ planned it to be on my birthday and and uh it was going to be the the big ride now this road has some spectacular views and uh just to give you an idea I’ve gone on to uh Google Street View and uh took a few images from there truly is an amazing run and uh we’ve left this GPX file on if you want to follow when this Road’s open and unfortunately for us this road open shortly after we uh we left for home we’re not entirely sure why it was closed we’re thinking it could possibly be for this reason snow across the road in the meantime it’s a left turn out of the hotel this is the route we actually took on this day and it takes us back towards Lords which we’d passed on our way in and uh eventually crosses back rejoins our original route Carol was plotting away on base camp in the room last night it’s not that different really cuz most of the route we were going to do this way anyway it was just how we were going to get to that bit but it’s unfortunate but well she just have to come back but it’s still nice around here beautiful absolutely beautiful difficult being in France when we’ve been you kep saying inish I just got used to Spanish and now it’s like everything’s in French and I found that really difficult it was breakfast this morning was nice simple but uh it was it was nice they got ham and cheese and Quant and bread and the bread was lovely one it a got an orange juicing machine where you put the oranges in the top yeah haven’t had one of those Canaria have we yeah hotels right by the coast isn’t it Carol it is we’re right up on the North Coast of Spain Honda tonight staying in old castle you need to pull up soon why not fasten my helmet oh well done yeah that’s what I thought naughty boy it’s all the fuff with the cameras that is ah you anybody watches these videos maybe won’t realize what a massive fuff it is to try and film anything while you’re away trying to get all the cameras going and there’s batteries that aren’t charged up okay let’s try again [Music] [Music] [Music] this is Lords folks [Music] Lords and we can’t that wave left there I think we’ve missed the fabulous church folks it was just over there on the left well folks we’ve got a slight delay here [Music] hey we got to watch out to the cow just for some of that having a little breather now really good run though that was wasn’t it nice road yeah yeah really good road yeah for saying it was a uh stop Gap we’re currently on the [Music] d920 the runs is to the left and that’s where we would have come out if we would have gone over the mountain pass from our overnighter that way is all oon and the buy that’s where we’re heading some nice curves there W it we want to know why the signs are upside down yeah we need to go and look that up and find out why the place name signs are often turned upside down we’ve passed loads it must mean something but we don’t know what beautiful scenery lovely roads generally it’s been reasonably good tarmac although this one’s a little bit bumpy we’re here to ride aren’t we and it’s just nice to be on these roads yeah motorways don’t do for especially on these bikes it’s hard and we’ve got all day so there’s no rush any time of the day it doesn’t seem to matter any time of the day there’s just nobody around [Music] well folks uh we have a problem now rout baret God there so many roads closed this isn’t close C of snow close C of road work paror Honda Rosa one [Music] night well folks this is Honda rea we’re about a mile and a half away from our uh our overit never going to figure it from that yeah right yeah got it I got it I got it residence set residence for where where F man we’re getting very close to it now okay yeah wow I knew it was going to be difficult do you want hola uh we need to access the car path two motos do you have reservation yes Carol and Richard hardest one to find yet that was really difficult to find on the bikes my goodness we’re here we’re in the room this is the no expense spared one yeah we would we genuinely would never normally spend this sort of money big bed really big bed we got a fan which we’ve been playing with yeah we have worked out how to turn it on which is good yeah yeah uh I’ll show you the view got C view because this is an old castle we not got a very big window but look at that view hey down there there’s our bikes so we can actually see the bikes from the from the room and uh terrific view absolutely terrific normal stuff te coffee Mak we haven’t had that in any of the other ones that’s new ah wow but normal mini fridge in there mini fridge down there yeah obviously everything is fitted in around the old building structure itself but safe drawers in there all right the bathroom oh that’s a weird sink isn’t it B to get water on the floor with that I I turned the sink on and um went whoosh straight over there so you have to turn it on very carefully sty of substance it is really yeah bday tet hair dryer uh the the the par the parador towers of have been lovely yeah they are they’re really fluffy white fluffy tails you could wish for very nice we’re going to go in and get our luggage aren’t we which is a bit of a a walk down there yeah the guy checked us in though was lovely he was because I did sign up for the Amigos thing for parador so you get some discounts and benefits and although I haven’t booked through parador I’ve booked through booking.com he says you are a member and I says yeah but we’ve just not booked through it cuz it was easier to do the booking.com website he says I still give you your free drinks he says so he was lovely all right we’re in 302 look up there it’s a long way up w we hope it’s open it is amazing how they made it liveable I me look it up there oh wow now that is a function room isn’t it banquet wow well we are in the C castle look how thick these walls are there’s the square outside and this is the bar down here look oh yeah ah so they do serve people for outside in the square in here but not in the Terrace yeah through into there so this is the ball spits open to the public oh yeah we have discovered this is the Terrace front over there yeah the border is the river yeah what’s that bit there is that France yeah I think so what we also discovered is there’s an airport just over there what’s the airport called San Sebastian San Sebastian and when the planes come in they come about level with the skyline over there someone’s knocked that bit of staircase down just such a fascinating place well that’s a fairly all steer entrance to the parador isn’t it and uh we’re in rather a beautiful Square here it is Lovely isn’t it it is nice looking bar over there MH to frequent in a bit which I think so yes there’s a fishing boat just going out lift to get down to the car park where our bikes are bikes are to away just down there we need to find somewhere to eat tonight as well because yes we should be perusing menus they only do breakfast here and even that only got a tiny dining room so I mean such a big building yes and that massive banquet room they’ve got up there they’re sitting empty wouldn’t that be a place to have a meal evening meal yeah yeah you think these are cannons yeah it looks like it yeah we might be able to get all the way around here okay someone’s parked to Honda in Honda yeah we were in the uh middle Courtyard of there yeah weren we looking out the other way yeah see this is this is what they do with parador they save old buildings and turn them into commercial Enterprises yeah this is a really old building I think it started something like the 10th Century 10th Century for Charles the fth it said Charles the fth wow yeah obviously it’s been added to over the years but that’s where we were sat at yeah we were sat up there yeah I wonder what you do to get that room up there look looks a bit special doesn’t it that is the room to have isn’t it yeah quite nice Gardens over there that’s the airport over there well T it was quite a shock when that just came in L wrong like what’s that doing is it going to crash no it’s just going into the airport got to love exploring these old towns haven’t you yeah it’s amazing it’s nice to get here early enough to have a wand around to do this yeah what a nice Square here isn’t it it is yeah don’t know quite what you call this here but it does look absolutely amazing doesn’t it balconies look amazing don’t they they do yeah big saw big hair I think we found the old walls of the city here they didn’t pretend anybody getting in did they they sure didn’t quite a way nice way to join old and new I think part of the road Network where we got completely lost getting in here yeah we did ride underneath this and we were in completely the wrong place we did yeah yeah well we weren’t we we should have just been we were like just one road away but you get to where we wanted to be look at the woodwork up there holding this old building well we’ve made it to made it to the water still not find anywhere we want to eat though no don’t know whether I can zoom in enough here but uh I guess the guy with the drum on the bow has got the easy job well the guy at the back steering as well yeah okay guys the big question how much do you think it costs for one night in this hotel bed and breakfast two people it’s £280 wow or thereabouts because you pay in Euros so depends on the exchange rate slightly yeah but it works out about 280 it’s not cheap not cheap but very nice happy birthday very nice thank you right are we going to go and ditch this camera stuff and uh yeah go find go find some yeah something to eat yeah anyway thanks a lot for watching for today been a great day I think this has been probably the best weather of the holiday today let go out rain again tomorrow so anyway thank you very much for watching and we’ll catch you on the next video bye bye-bye

Beautiful! Man that is some cow bells. I heard the city sign being upside down were to protest the EU emissions directive. We stayed in Castle in Ireland and it was wonderful . We judge rooms by the bathroom towels😄😄 Your castle had a humongous banquet table. I really enjoy these trips!
What a fantastic place to spend a birthday really special, and that is the way to make use of old buildings bringing them back to life why don't they do that here rather than making things listed thus restricting what can be done to the extent that buildings are left to decay .Seeing those roads just makes one realise how crowded we are on this little island too wow !!. Super well done guys on showing the various sites and buildings giving a great feel for how it is to stay in such a gorgeous place fabulous 👌👍
Wow what a place to stay, yes its not cheap but worth the money in my book for a nights stop over.
A great place to have a walk around and explore.
Thanks for sharing, I could say I am not jealous but that would be a lie.
Gutted for you, that original road looked incredible. I hope people do appreciate the faffage involved, as it's certainly a lot most of the time.
I read somewhere a while ago about the signs, I think it something to with the farmers protests. I saw it on another video so looked it up. Gotta love them French farmers.😁😁
What a beautiful place that Parador was, Carol certainly spoils you Richard. Love seeing these old places, and even moreso when they've been renovated to that standard.
Lovely video again.
It's such a pity the mountain road was closed but still that Parador was the icing on the cake. It was great too that you had time to show us around the old town, so much craftsmanship and heritage.
Gorgeous ride guys. Got to love the sunny days. Regarding the signs, it's a way for the farmers to protest. It says basically that the world is turned upside down.
It was so strange that all those roads were closed. The castle has a very nice location there and the view from it was also great. The guy that was just steering on that "kanu" had the easiest job among the crew. Funny, but the truth. 🙂 Nice video, just like always Richard. Cheers.
Great video, very nice place to stay and great scenery . Thank you for sharing.
I flew in San Sebastian back in 2004. It's a very interesting approach because you fly through both Spanish and French airspace, so you have to switch back and forth. It's a beautiful city and is know for it's gastronomy.
When the weather is good the Pyrenees and Picos are, in my opinion, unbeatable. Far better than the overcrowded, fee taking passes of Austria and the Alps. Were you really trying to entice a 1 tonne cow to come over and see you?! 😱😁
Love your videos. I used to use Basecamp but after so many issues, took the plunge and took the My Route App errrr…route. I've never regretted it. I watched the video with the rain and was impressed by the way Carol pressed on in the wet. I salute her! I'm saving these videos and routes for future trips. Thanks very much.
Wow, what a treat. Some great places you go to.
Sally and I ended that. Shame about the road being shut. I always say given yourself time to get lost. I love the hotels you stayed in on your trip. How novel to be able to look across the bay and see France. Until next week! Take care.
What a fabulous location and a super place to celebrate your birthday 🎉. Who cares about the price tag when you have those memories to take away with you. The closest I got to that part of the world, was St Jean de Luz 21 years ago and my wife and I still talk about it! Thanks again for another great video.
Can’t beat a bit of ‘faffage’, I’m an expert and regularly have to stop after just setting off. Looks a fabulous part of the world. Once stopped in a very quiet part of the Pyrenees and all we could hear was cow bells, lovely…great editing and of course great route planning.😉👍
Paradors are in some amazing buildings and locations, love them.
What a fabulous birthday present, you got the weather the location everything just right.
You gave us more cowbell! I hope you didn't get too cheesed off before you could moo-ve on 😂
Lourdes is very famous for apparitions of the virgin Mary and a pilgrimage destination.
So many closed roads…😢
That looks like a fabulous place to stay. Terrific ❤
Thanks for sharing and taking the time create the vid, it’s a lovely area.
Great videos on this trip. Thank you for sharing.
Great food for trip planning thoughts.
hi again Richard and Carol .lovely video , nice music , loved the old castle you stayed at .
I agree. That was a nice idea.
What a fabulous experience. Well worth the expense😊
Nice to see blue sky in the morning, only to be hindered by best laid plans and all that, looked a nice ride despite that, though I’ll be steering the Mrs away from that Parador at 280 quid😮…
Gotta love Parador hotels.
Happy Birthday and many more to come
We loved Hondarribia – and that Parador was something else! Great place for a birthday treat 👍 – you’re absolutely right – motovlogging is just a massive amount of faffing about! Great vid! 😀👍
Beautiful shots and beautiful scenery. I rode the Picos route on a tour of Spain a few years ago, it was awesome. You just had to be careful about the small lumps of rock that had fallen down from the mountains on the apex of practically every corner!
Wow! You’ve stayed is some amazing places. Love the fact that you are experiencing the towns and life rather than some bog standard tourist hotel. The terrace looked so cool……..
Glad you finally got some good weather and the Hotel looks lovely. 😎
Amazing Hotel! We found Route Barree is a French national pastime! And yes filming is a faff! I drive my wife potty with it all lol
A nice birthday treat for you Richard from Carol! The castle was stunning & a great idea to keep it maintained whilst keeping the integrity of the castle. I've not yet been to the Pyrenees so your tour has given more of an appetite so thank you both 👍
A real shame about the road closures but crikey, nice digs 👌🏼
Beautiful architecture too.
We did the same route generally end of June/july. All routes were open ( sorry !) I recon they were shut when you went because the Tour de France went over the aubisque and tourmalet in July and possibly shut because the roads were being prepared with fresh tarmac. Worth noting what route they take and when if you go back.
We noticed the upside down signs. The landlady at the chateau du druon where we stayed spoke good English. Basically the locals if not happy with the govt/ local council as to how they run things, as a protest turn the signs around. A stay at the château I think you would like. Awesome. Worth checking out. Safe travels.
