I had an old external dropper but the cable ran along the seattube making it a royal pain to clamp in a bike stand. I upgraded the dropper on my Hardtail and put the oneup V2.1 in the my stinky.
I Lowered the drop to 190mm because the post is too long to drop in all the way due to the stud for the dope brake arm attachment in the seat tube. I added a Wolftooth Pro dropper lever and it works like a dream.
I did have to drill a small hole in the seat tube but I removed the burrs and used touch up paint before installing the cable and just ran the dropper cable up the front derailleur guides on the frame.
