Hi all,

After many hours over multiple chainring swaps, I think I have identified the cause of rubbing in my big chainring to be front derailleur cage angle misalignment (#1, #2).

In video (#3) you can see that just the trim from moving my front derailleur though the rear sprocket gets the chainring to hit the bottom of the inner derailleur plate when I'm the FD is in the big ring.

Derailleur mount (#4) doesn't seem to allow me to change the angle, as it has a fixed shape for the derailleur to slot into. Applying pressure to angle it how I want when tightening seems to have no effect.

Setup:

  • Bike is a 2021 BMC Teammachine SLR01
  • All drivetrain parts are 11sp Ultegra di2, 52/36 circular chainring.
  • Chainring outer plate is 3mm (max spec range) above teeth. I like to run closer to 1.5mm but lowering the derailleur makes it worse.
  • Front derailleur offsets are set to 0 via di2 app (as a starting point)
  • Support bolt is set to be just touching the frame, and tightening it make things worse (#5)
  • High limit screw is set to just be touching the plate, as tightening make things worse
  • Derailleur cage doesn't seem bent at all, and there haven't been any incidents that I can recall which would have bent it in this direction.

I have two questions:

  1. Am I correct in my assessment that event without trying to fiddle with offsets, I have set everything to have the best the derailleur angle I can?
  2. How could I rotate the back of the derailleur inwards the to the spec angle?

Thanks for any and all help!

P.S. Apologies for old.reddit users, I can't work out how to get videos in the post body without using new reddit

  1. Have you loosened the support bolt all the way and then loosened, adjusted, and re-tightened the mounting bolt? The support bolt will move the derailleur out by itself but there’s nothing that will pull the angle back in all the way as you loosen it.
