Most if not all wheels have a cosmetic ply of carbon fiber on the outside of the rim. Is that structural? I mean… for brands like Light Bicycle that allow you to chose your weave pattern, probably not. Does that mean that all outer plies are purely cosmetic? Well, no. And to be fair, I can’t even say that about LB.
What is the case here? I don’t know. Send this picture to the manufacturer and see what they say.
