This is the final Part 6 of 6 of my Grand European Viking Cruise Series. Between June 5-19, 2025 my wife, Paulette and I, took the Grand European Viking River Tour. It started at Budapest ending at Amsterdam. The top sun deck of these ships provided an excellent launch platform from which to send the drone along the rivers to capture footage of various stops. These included Budapest, Vienna, Wurzburg, Wertheim, Koblenz and Cologne. Kinderdyk was captured in an earlier video frrom 2023.
This video offers an aerial overview of Cologne, Germany on June 17, 2025 in 4K. Captured at 60-80m meters above the Rhine River near the Hohenzollern Bridge.
From 80 meters, the bridge’s steel arches unfold like industrial lacework. Deutsche Bahn trains streak across its tracks (1,200+ daily), while sunlight glints off 500,000+ love padlocks adorning its railings—a mosaic of human stories etched in metal. To the east, the mosaic-like facade of KölnTriangle contrasts with the bridge’s Prussian-era equestrian statues below.
Drifting southward, the Rhine transforms into a liquid highway. Barges cut wakes past the MS RheinEnergie event ship, while cyclists trace serpentine paths along the Rheinboulevard promenade. The Deutzer Brücke’s modernist lines frame distant refineries—hinting at Cologne’s industrial legacy.
West, climbing parallel to the cathedral’s 157m spires can be seen shadows from its filigree stonework lattice the square below, where ant-like pilgrims gather. The bridge’s arches visually ‘frame’ the cathedral—a deliberate 19th-century alignment symbolizing church-state unity.
Skirting the Altstadt, crimson rooftops cluster like cells in a honeycomb. Half-timbered guild halls face off against Ludwig Museum’s concrete brutalism. Beyond, the river curls northward toward the Chocolate Museum, its curve echoing the cathedral’s shattered-rebuilt history (1945 bombing visible in older stone sections).
