In 2024, the first amputee to attempt the Tour Divide race made it just under 600 miles into the race before heading home to recover. This year, I managed to make it just under 700 miles into the race before heading home. An infection in one’s residual limb can very quickly become life threatening because it can make its way into the open bone within the limb. After I kicked the first infection I got from pressure sores on my residual limb, I got back on course to hopefully continue the race. A few days later some new sores opened up and it is just a matter of time before another infection set in. As such, I decided to pull out of the race for good this time.

Will an amputee ever finish this grueling race unsupported? Maybe. However, that amputee will need the best prosthetics care available. My race attempt this year was all in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Range of Motion Project. They are a nonprofit that provides high quality prosthetics care for underserved communities in Central and South America. If you have the opportunity, please donate to their mission or share their mission with your community!

    Awesome efforts !

Medical question, if I may, why is an open bone left like that ? Why do they not cap it off with something ? It seems like an incredible vulnerability to leave amputees with.
