[Music] good morning and welcome back to the New Forest on a lovely sunny morning at the end of a lovely sunny month so this is the May June update of the New Forest video diary showing some of the things that have been going on in and around the forest over the past couple of months if you’re interested in videos about the New Forest then please consider subscribing to our channel on YouTube living in the New Forest I’d be very grateful okay then let’s go see what’s been going on the sunny weather in April continued into May and temperatures were 10° above average for the first week of the month this time of year is peak dawn chorus month and the woods were alive with bird song one of my favorites is the black cap i mentioned this in the last video diary in April but it’s well worth hearing again [Music] early May is peak fall time as well and it seems as if we have more fall than ever this year on the 12th of May the stallions were released onto the forest they stay out for about 6 weeks and each specially selected stallion has its own allotted area complete with mares and we’re very pleased with the new arrivals here’s commoner Sally Jolly’s family stallion name Polaris being released at Longdown straight past the cows he caused quite a stir but things soon settled down there’s new life everywhere in the forest at this time of year this is a four spot chaser dragonfly filmed by Steve Lake young birds are starting to fledge their nests here’s a hungry family of young swallows and a wheatier chick captured by Sarah Smith the new forest is home to 15 species of orchid and late spring early summer is the time to see them these are lesser butterfly orchids and these are Heath spotted orchids i think this is also the time of year to see cotton grass flowering in the wetter areas of the forest these cotton-like flowers were once used as a feather substitute in pillow stuffing also used to make candle wicks and also to dress wounds during the first world war in the third week of May we had rain much to relief of the farmers it was the driest start to the year for 70 years the rain didn’t last for many days though and the warm sunny weather soon returned in the summer months the red deer stags and the fellow deer bucks are growing their new antlers as they grow the new antlers are covered in a velvety protective coating the deer are said to be in velvet this group of red deer stags were shared by Annette Gregory in contrast the antlers of the road deer are fully formed now as their ruting season starts in July earlier than the other deer species this is a good time to see road deer as the males move around to establish their territories the sunny weather that we’ve had more or less throughout June has been good for the butterflies who suffered badly from last year’s rain butterfly numbers are well up on last year one of the butterflies that you might see in certain parts of the new forest is the silver studded blue this butterfly has a remarkable relationship with ants i made a separate short video about this and there’s a link to that video at the top of the page now and in the text below if you’re interested in finding out more about the silver studded blue butterflies at the end of June we had another mini heat wave a welcome change from this time last year when it never seemed to stop raining this year there’s people starting to talk about hostpipe bands and comparing the hot weather to the long hot summer of 1976 our streamometer shows a dried up stream i wonder if it’ll still look like that at the end of next month come back next time and see what else has been going on please share this video with friends who might be interested and consider subscribing to our channel to help it grow and as always thanks for watching

Beautiful episode, Rob😊 and again great story telling Beautiful nature, horses, deer, so many different orchids, butterflies, and such beautiful weather, a day of rain, but nature can certainly use some rain now.
Hopefully, the rain will stay away for the next 3 weeks because my daughter and son-in-law are going to explore the uk by motorbike.
At this moment, we have a heatwave😅
