26.06.2018.

At 15 km/h through Europe Day 42 Tuesday, June 26, 2018 On the Eurovelo 6 cycle route in France Here, at the campsite in L’Isle-sur-le-Doubs, there’s a summery morning mood. The birds underline the mood with their cheerful chirping. And my growling stomach fits seamlessly into this chorus like a baritone. Since I can’t prepare breakfast due to a lack of groceries and there’s nowhere to buy any nearby before 10:00 a.m., I pack my things and head into town. The medication I bought yesterday is starting to work. I ‘m definitely feeling better today. I’m not completely fit yet. Today’s stage could end in Mulhouse. It’s 70 kilometers away. But it’s not compulsory. The flu is the reason I look so unkempt today. After a quick Skype chat with my brother, I’m almost ready to leave. The tent still needs to be taken down. It’s 10:00 a.m. I’m enjoying the pleasant, warm breeze gently dancing over the lush green meadows and bushes— and the light blue, cloudless sky. You know, Gerhrad, in 2018, approximately 2,800 people live in L’Isle-sur-le-Doubs. The village lies in the valley where the Doubs curves northward , splitting into two branches that form an elongated island. To the north are the Jura mountain ranges. The flat terrain here is about a kilometer wide and, in addition to the Doubs, is also used by the Rhine Canal waterway. From L’Isle-sur-le-Doubs to Colombier-Fontaine . Five kilometers from the campsite, there’s a wonderful rest stop. On the way, I picked up a fresh, crusty baguette. Along with it, there’s cheese, sausage, and peppers. And, of course, a cup of coffee. Wonderful nature! Isn’t it? Good morning! Enjoy! Thank you! How do the French keep their rest areas clean? I have a garbage bag with me. The waste is kept in it and properly disposed of at the nearest garbage container. An hour later. Five weeks ago, on May 19th, I bought groceries nearby. A rail strike in France was the reason why I had already spent a few days cycling on the journey to the Atlantic . This friendly gentleman thinks it would be better to… …where are we? Typical! Gerhard’s sense of direction! The cycle path goes steeply uphill here. I hope I understood correctly! My husband doesn’t speak a word of French! Thank you very much! Goodbye! Are you from Sweden? No. I’m from Austria. From Colombier-Fontaine to Dampierre-sur-les-Doubs Say “meow”! Gerhard! Remember, that’s a French cat! It doesn’t understand German! A few meters further! Hey! That can’t be true! A baguette vending machine! Now all we need is butter, ham, cheese and milk. From Dampierre-sur-les-Doubs to Montbeliard So, you told me you’re from Germany? And now you’re going to Spain. Exactly. I set off eight days ago. Amelie! Hi! Gerhard! Nice to meet you! Hello Gerhard! Are you traveling alone? Yes. Completely alone. My first trip alone! You have a musical instrument with you. Yes. My ukulele. Can you play something for me? Oh God! No! I really can’t. I only play for myself. We’re on first-name terms, right? Yes, please! Okay. What kind of tour are you doing? I started four weeks ago in La Boule Escouplac. It’s on the Atlantic. Then I cycled along the Loire, the Canal du Centre, the Doubs and a few other canals and rivers. And where are you going now? First, I’m going to Mulhouse. Then, through Switzerland, to your home country, to Donau-Eschingen. From there, I’ll follow the Danube to the Black Sea. What motivates you to cycle to Spain alone? I was always sitting in school, wishing I could finally get out! Now I’m finally finished with school. And I’ve always gone on vacation with family and friends. And I’ve always enjoyed cycling. It’s also a great way to unwind. And I definitely want to go south. I want warmth and the sea. And when I’m cycling alone, I go at my own pace, get on and off whenever I want, and am flexible. I love that so much. Do you have a tent with you? A tent, an insulated sleeping bag, a ukulele, a backpack, and a few other things. When will you reach your destination? I don’t have a specific destination. I’m cycling a bit through Portugal. I have three months. I have to be back in Menningen in October. Today, I’m cycling without socks again. But with sandals! The pedals, which have clicks on one side, make this possible. This means I can use them in different ways. The reason I’m riding without socks today is because of the washing facilities at the last campsite. Well, there were washing facilities. However, the necessary sink plugs were missing, so the water in the basin kept draining. Guys, you should know that Gerhard’s socks far exceed the legally permitted odor nuisance limit. It’s now 2:00 p.m. and I’m in Montbeliard. I was last here on May 18, 2018. So, about five weeks ago. That day, I arrived in town around 8:00 p.m. and was able to experience a wonderful sunset. In front of me is an Intersport store that looks exactly like the stores I know from Austria! And behind it is a McDonald’s! I won’t be visiting that today, though, because I have enough rice and water with me to prepare a delicious meal later. Oh! There’s a bike path away from the busy road! Gerhard, you were just in Montbéliard. This town once belonged to the County of Württemberg and was then called Mömpelgard. In 2018, approximately 25,000 people live here. Montbéliard Castle, which houses the Natural History Museum, is worth seeing. It’s still 44 kilometers to Mulhouse! Since it’s only 2:25 p.m., I should be there before dusk. Now I can decide. Do I believe the sat nav with the 49 kilometers or the signposts with 44 kilometers? I believe the directions with 44 kilometers! From Montbéliard to Froidefontaine Hey! A tricycle rider. That must make for a great slipstream! Hey! He’s pedaling hard. Or is he using an electric vehicle? About 40 kilometers from Mulhouse, a viewing platform juts out into this enchanting natural setting. 15 minutes later. You’re from Württemberg? Because of the dialect! No. I’m from Austria! And where are you from? A little north of Hamburg. And where did you start the tour? From home. I left very late and only managed 24 kilometers on the first day. I took the train to Bremen. I spent the night there. And since then I’ve been traveling by bike. That’s been a good three weeks! I always feel like I have too much luggage with me. I’ve just sent the third package home. And where are you going? I’m going to Spain, but I don’t have a specific destination. I see you have a tent! Where are you spending the nights? Mainly at campsites. And this is a recumbent bike, right? I ride it all the time. It has advantages and disadvantages. There have been days when I wished I were riding a touring bike. But now I’ve gotten used to it. My upper body is relaxed and my bottom doesn’t hurt. The tire circumference is small. Yes, exactly! It’s also more strenuous when going uphill. And in city traffic, you lose visibility. You can’t just get up if necessary. Are you going to the campsite in L’Isle-sur-le-Doubs today? That’s where I spent last night. Oh! And I thought I couldn’t make it today. My navigation system shows a distance of 30 kilometers. There’s supposed to be a campsite in Montbeliard, too. It’s just not marked on my map. That’s interesting! Yesterday, a German cyclist also discovered that there is no campsite in Montbeliard. And this overnight option isn’t listed in the Bikeline cycling tour book either. Hey Gerhard! Four rivers meet here! The Rhine Canal, the L’Allan, the L’Allain, and the La Bourbeuse. When, like me, you’re traveling alone for a long time, I enjoy encounters with animals and, of course, the friendly smile of a young lady. From Froidefontaine to Montreaux-Château. Only now do I notice that it’s constantly uphill and that the Doubs has said goodbye to me forever in Montbeliard. I’ve been following it since June 21st, from Verdun-sur-le-Doubs. Sometimes we lost sight of each other, sometimes it alternated with the Rhine Canal. And now it’s completely gone. After all, apart from our acquaintance during the journey, we were together for six days. What? There are campervans parked on the opposite bank. Curious, I check the Bikeline cycling guide to see if there’s a campsite here. There’s definitely not. It’s another 22 kilometers to Mulhouse. At an average speed of 15 km/h, I should be there between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. In my opinion, the drinking water supplies along the cycle path could be improved. But not only the drinking water, but also the food supplies are depleted. I’ve covered over 1,000 kilometers in France, and I’m still struggling to find grocery stores near the Eurovelo 6 cycle route. Luckily, I still have a peach in my pocket, which I’m going to enjoy now. And ideally, there’s still some water in my thermos flask, which I’m going to use now. From Montreaux-Château to Dannemarie Wow! Those are magnificent ships! I love varied scenes. And this mixture of water colored in various shades of green, the gray-striped cycle path, the light blue, almost cloudless sky, framed by the scent of freshly mown meadows, is what makes my endorphins dance happily. Since it feels like it’s still going uphill and the bike path resembles a children’s roller coaster, I’m going to get a bird’s eye view. Another 500 meters and then it’s downhill! Do you speak English? German My name is Gerhard. Manfred Where are you going? The journey is the destination! Manfred explains to me that he left the bike path in Mulhouse and cycled over the mountains. Are you cycling through Europe? No. I’m too old for that. I’m already 70! And you? I’ll be 57 in September! 10 years makes a difference! Of course! Although I can already tell that I’m much fitter than I was when I was younger. Because back then I smoked at least 20 cigarettes a day! Look! You’ve dropped a clapboard! What fell off? Oh, I see! The clothespin! What a thing! Is it worth it? The trailer? Since we started on the Atlantic, it’s served us well for over 1,300 kilometers. So far, I’ve only had one broken tube. I’m very happy with it. But it looks monstrous. That’s true. There are a lot of bulky things in it. The self-inflating air mattress is also broken. It inflates itself on the go. Then there’s a large pillow and a thick winter sleeping bag. As soon as I make the stopover in Austria, I’ll get rid of or replace some things. Hey! I can’t believe it! It’s only 59 kilometers to the Swiss border! Dannemarie! What a magical atmosphere! Even on the journey there, when I cycled from Mulhouse to Baume-les-Dames about six weeks ago due to the rail strike , I was fascinated by this harbor. From Dannemarie to Mulhouse I love the philosophy of living life in the moment. And I love nature. Probably also because we are a part of it. In any case, I consider it a gift that a cherry tree stands here offering its fruit. A few moments later. Oh! There is the bookcase that I first saw on the second day of my trip about six weeks ago. I’m gradually starting to feel thirsty because my water bottles and thermos have been empty for some time. I’m curious whether the man I asked for water will come back. Because when I asked him for it, he asked me with a skeptical expression where I came from. Oh! Thank you very much! I wonder where my interview partners today, Amelie, Tim and Manfred, are at the moment. Have they already reached their destinations for the day? A family of ducks! They’re not quacking at all! I have other images in my head. Namely those of older ladies sitting on benches in front of their apartments in the evening and… I think these must be the first houses in Mulhouse. What a joy! I’ve arrived in Mulhouse. Later than I had planned a few hours earlier, but still in daylight! Since the campsite is close to the bike path, there’s a good chance I won’t cycle past. In any case, I’m looking forward to seeing Alexander, the campsite manager, again. Good day! Hello Alexander! Good day, Madam! Would you like a glass of water? Yes, please! This is delicious! How are you? I apologize if I don’t greet you with a handshake, as my hands are dirty. But today I completed the longest route of the day so far. About 80 kilometers. Is the bike ride for a good cause? Yes. This morning I announced on social media that I would be in Mulhouse this evening and that I’m looking forward to seeing Alexander again. We met five weeks ago. I’ve informed a photographer of your arrival. Perhaps he’ll come tomorrow. A few moments later. I’m very excited about a possible photo opportunity and the prospect of advertising for my charity tour. And finally, Alexander convinced me not to camp in a tent today, but to stay in one of those stylish, cozy-looking wooden huts instead.
