Hey r/CanyonBikes,
We launched the new Grizl today and we wanted to dive a bit deeper into how we made the new Grizl, more Grizl.
We have three guests for you: Matthias Eurich, Matej Sömen and Matt Leake.
Matthias Eurich (Middle) has been with Canyon for over 5 years and is the product manager for the Grizl and the Grail. Matthias has completed ultras on the new Grizl, riding Sneak Peaks in the Dolomites last year and this year completing The Traka 360 before presenting the bike the next day.
Matej Sömen (Left), our Senior Design Engineer, has been with Canyon for over 8 years and has worked on multiple gravel and road bikes, particularly fine tuning geometry, developing the ECLIPS system (including many night rides to test) and helping with the development of the RIFT suspension fork with DT swiss. He's a keen bike packer and used the new Grizl to ride from Koblenz, Germany, to his hometown in Slovenia.
Matt Leake (Right) is the Brand Manager for Gravel & Road and has been with Canyon for over 12 years. Matt is from the UK but now speaks fluent German. He also rode the Dales Divide this year in around 40 hours on the new Grizl (600km btw) as well as the Traka 360.
You're welcome to ask the guys individual questions or ask general questions about what has made the Grizl the bike it is today. You can start posting your questions in this thread now. We will be answering as many as we can between 2-3 pm CEST.
This is our first ever AMA on Reddit so please keep it positive! We're looking forward to the conversation. Let's go.

Hey there. Why the move back to an external seat post clamp? Has it to do with repairability?
Any plans to have gravel bikes with a massive granny gear on a 1by?
Much of my gravel riding involves steep off road hills and I like the simplicity of a 1by but find many of them have c. 1 to 1 gear ratios, which are a challenge in 20% climbs… I know I can modify myself, but I’m currently looking for a new gravel bike and would rather get exactly what I want off the shelf.
I have the first version of Grizl – can I replace my current fork with the one with semi-integrated cables or is there a technical limitation?
any chance you can ship me a free Grizl to try it out
When can I get the integrated rack and fender in the US?
No question, just wanted to say that I love my Grail, nice work team!!!
Any plans to release a future Grizl escape with a higher loaded weight than 120 kg?
Unfortunately I’m no featherweight and that really cuts into the allowance for additional luggage.
I’m close to pulling the trigger on a competitor’s carbon gravel bike because they allow for a total weight of 130 kg.
Can you put a 2by groupset on the new Grizl?
Can you give us a rough idea of when the AL versions will be released?
The new CF models look great but are out of my price range (and for bikepacking I prefer non-CF).
Is it worth waiting on the new AL versions if I want a new bike this year or will they probably not be released this year in which case the old AL models are still the way to go?
Thanks!
Why the new “hunchback”? Does this serve a specific purpose or is it purely aesthetic?
Any plans to release nice colorways to non-CFR bikes that are not a dull black, grey, or brown?
– a grizl throwback owner.
Any plans on releaseing a Grizl with either:
1. Lower tyre clearance (40 mm) but same geometry and mounting points? For dual use as road and gravel-packing setup?
2. lower spec. 2by versions, with the 1 1/8th fork and UDH
Thanks, and love the bikes
