Don’t know if anybody thought about this, but I’ll share my experience.
Recently switched to 29t sprocket after running 28t for ages. I run 9t in the back. Was 30t(and 31t) for a while, but it’s just a little too heavy. Especially with 165mm cranks.
The "standard" have been 25 or 28, but not only do these make different cs lengths, but after riding 28, 25 feels like going super slow.
I did go from 30t to 31t(since I had it laying around). Last time I rode 31t, I had 175mm cranks which feels pretty nice. 165mm now and not going to change that. Used the 31t just to feel out the estimated cs length before I bought 29t, and the ish 13.75" back end felt super nice. Been running 27t in the past, and those are more available than 29. But after going as heavy as 30/31t, even 28 felt light.
Had to buy directly from Fly, very few shops have the 29t in stock.
But it feels amazing, so if you have ever been thinking about either chaning your CS length and don’t want to go down in gearing, or you just want a little more punch than what 28t gives you, I can recommend going for 29t.
All I want know is a 29t guard sprocket, hopefully someone makes this soon.
Hope this help anyone🙌

How does it alter your chain stay length? I thought that was a fixed measurement.
Fuck I miss my old FBM 29t!!! I’ve had it since at least 2006 but it hits the chain stays on my current frame so she is in well deserved retirement… For now… Haha
People 3D print sprocket guards with nylon, they aren’t quite as good but the difference isn’t much if it’s done properly… so, depending on what sprocket you have, you might be able to find a printable copy of a guard to fit it, it wouldn’t be hard to scale up a guard meant for a 25t into one to fit a 28 or 29 either so that might be worth a try
