I've been wanting to get a bike again for some pretty casual adventures. There's some bike trails near the house that would be fun to explore. Nothing too intense. When we moved into this house, there were a few REALLY worn bikes under the deck. I know very little about bikes and wanted to check and see if this would be worth taking it to a shop and having them fix or replace parts that needed it. Or if this is something I should trash and just get a new bike?

Trying to bring this bike back to life will be an exercise in disappointment.
That bike isn’t worth one new inner tubes.
Unfortunately not. That bike is a very entry level department store bike, the frame is super outdated. Not to be negative, but you’d end up saving money just buying something nicer that doesn’t need everything replaced. Which can be a really fun process if you can get your hands on a good older frame. But that is not a good older frame. Some things you’d wanna think about are your budget and how you wanna ride it, then go from there. If you just wanna cruise around town, an old mountain bike from the 80s is an awesome fun commuter bike but I would focus on trying to find something from specialized, trek, etc that is more solid.
Toss it, you can find something on marketplace for a couple hundred bucks that is a huge step up from this.
nope
It looks like you’re in Birmingham? If so I’d go to Redemptive Cycles: redemptivecycles.com they are a bike co-op with lots of killer used bikes and they even do weekly group rides.
It’s not worth it, you can throw it away.
If you have money, any other bike will be better.
If you don’t have money… You can’t afford the stupidly expensive bill this bike will get you to be still worse than the cheapest Walmart kid bike.
Walk away, bury it and forget this cursed parody of a bike (it has never been good)
Get a welder and build a cargo bike
Every unpainted surface is thoroughly rusted through, that’s a liability at best.
No, budget bike. Not sure it would be worth saving if it was new
Yup. What they all said. You will never find parts for that.
Donate bike some kid will love it after sandblasting… don’t know if back derailleur is going to work again….
See if the innertubes hold air, and toss the rest. I’m all for fixing up whatever bike, but not those. They are not fun to ride. Even though low key, I still kinda want a V2600 as an urban bomber, I don’t fuck with full suspension bikes.
Only for scrap man. Tubes and tires maybe?
Get a bike you’ll enjoy as a first bike, this will be so much hassle it might ruin the sport for you
Better yet, it’s worth restoring
It’s one of the ugliest bikes I have ever seen. I will give it that.
For a quick ghost off a cliff !! Yea!
Nope. You can get a nicer 50 year old bike off Craigslist for $100.
Do the tires hold air and have sound tread? (They might be worth more than the rest of the bike and it’s always good to have an emergency spare set of tires/tubes…) Honestly, I wouldn’t inflict that “bike shaped object” on a low-life tweaker bum… (Now, if it were an aluminum frame, then I’d strip everything I could off it and recycle the frame – might only get enough for a cheap soda but it would get some use out of it 😎)
Thank you everyone for your replies and advice! I really appreciate it.
Donate it and get a new one
