I've inherited this bike from a family member to see if I enjoy it. The ferrule on the final piece of shifter cable housing that enters the derailleur was snapped. From what I have read/seen online it may be that the section of housing at the end was too short/long and not entering the derailleur straight and therefore putting stress on the ferrule.
While taking it apart though, I noticed these two pieces that go onto/near the other end of this piece of housing on the stays. I found a couple of videos of the bike on YouTube to try and see what it should look like but honestly they're all different.
I see that the hard plastic piece further to the right is a "long nose ferrule" or something along those lines, but what is its purpose, why does it have that extra part? As for the other one it's soft rubber and in the videos sometimes it is slid right up to/over that long nose ferrule and in others its half way up the exposed cable almost like a cable donut.
Help appreciated!
