Hello I have just bought what I believe to be a Peugeot Carbolite 301 with a steel frame for $60 at an estate sale and am looking to restore it. This is my first time doing something like this and I have some questions.
1. How to deal with some rust on the bike frame? (Pictures 2 and 4)
There seems to be some rust around the seat stay, chain stay, and head tube which seems to be surface level. I saw that I could use white vinegar to get it off, but am concerned about further chipping and peeling of paint. Is there something I should coat it with after removing rust or should I strip all of the paint off and repaint it (if so what is the best way to deal with cable guides when painting)
2. Proper lube/grease for each part?
There are a lot of different moving parts and I want to know which lube/grease I should use for each?
- Chain
- Crank
- Gears
- wheel hub
- brake arms
- rear derailleur
- brake cables
- friction cables
- inside the friction shifter
- kick stand
- brake levers
- head tube
- seat post
- pedals
3. Tires
The tires are 27" x 1" 1/8. They are holding air well, however one of the spokes hits the rear derailleur when the chain is on the biggest gear. Are the wheel salvageable? During some of my research I saw someone tension test each of the spokes. I there an easy way to do this, should I replace them, or should I send them to a local bike store?
4. Cleaning Parts
I want the metal parts on my bike to gain there shine back. Currently what I believe to be the way to do this is
- Wash part using degreaser and fine steel wool, nylon brush, or metal brush
- 220 grit sand paper
- 400 grit wet/dry sand paper
- hand drill with cloth/buffing attachment and metal polish rough -> Fine -> super fine
Let me know what I got wrong in this process and what can be improved. I was thinking I would do this for the gears, cranks, pedals, derailleurs, brake arms, brake levers, seat post, and stem.
5. Handle bars
Handle bars are bent from a crash and need to be replaced, how should I go about finding a replacement
6. Other
I have no idea how a friction shifter works, any link to a video would be helpful or explanation of anatomy and parts. What wire do I get for the friction shifter? should the friction shifter's wires be exposed. I also think I should replace the brake cables and cable covers advice? I heard that the French have special standards for screw threads, how should I go about making sure I buy the correct screws or how I can restore the screws I already have. Both front and rear reflectors are broken, where to get replacements (I think this might be a new part added on).
